I have the AX89X, it's a great device. Note that the 10Gbe port is actually a multi-gig port (10Gbe/5Gbe/2.5Gbe) and the SFP+ port accepts only 10Gbe or 1Gbe modules. This device does not support Merlin custom firmware, however.

    • Strangely when I had it my 2.4ghz connectivity was shocking, but the 5ghz was fantastic.

Nothing I did see me for help. Ended up going to an AX86s where my 2.4ghz was great, and the 5ghz was decent.

      • Flashing new firmware fixed those issues. It's now rock solid. I replaced a whole stack of Ubiquiti gear with this and wouldn't go back.

        • Nice. Too late for me I'm afraid (this was over a year ago), but the performance of the 5ghz maxed out my internet connection from a few rooms away. If the issues are sorted, and you don't mind the physical size and internal fan, then the 89x is a great option at this price.

I had a terrible experience with Scoptec during the COVID GPU shortages. They had a fresh shipment of the RTX 3060, but their online cart refused to accept my AMEX. I called the Clayton store and the person on the phone told me to put the purchase through on the online store as "Pay on pickup" and that they'll leave aside one of the GPU for me when I get into the store later in the day, this was at 1pm approx and I told them I'll be at the store by about 4:30pm which they assured me was fine and that it'll be there for me. I finished my workshop at 4pm and headed into the store to pick it up and pay for it.

At the store I was told "you didn't pay for it online, so we can't secure the stock for you. no pay, no reserve, this is just how it is. you missed the chance and it's all sold out now". I was livid, I've purchased things from PLE, MSY, PCCaseGear and never had anything as outrageous as that happen to me before. I was literally shit out of luck and Scorptec made sure to make me feel like shit at the front counter too. Solid 1/10 for customer service, but I have bought things from their online store delivered since then and had no issues. I get it that buying it online with "Pay on pickup" is not actually contractually binding because of no "consideration" paid to secure the deal, but it's still just plain old shit customer service to promise me that on the phone and then not deliver.

I know everyone's experience is difference, but that is just what happened to me before I even had a chance to buy the GPU from them! I 100% believe the trustpilot complaints about this company.

Clearing old stock for WIFI7 which is just around the corner.

    • +5

That's very likely, but the cost of Wifi 7 devices will be astronomical initially — I'd guess $800+ for a router. Plus you won't be replacing all your devices — PCs, laptops, tablets, phones etc straight away just to take advantage of Wifi 7. This is a solid router to see you through the next 2-3 years, while you gradually introduce Wifi 7 devices to your household and the cost begins to become more affordable.

    • +1

Well what wifi7 device you have to benefit it from? There are so many devices still wifi5, probably at least 70% in your household which is not going out for another 2-3yrs so why bother.

      • @ace310. I'm not sure how your comment is relevant to the discussion. You could say exactly the same thing about this Wifi6 router - "there are so many devices still wifi5". Just saying…

        • +1

Wifi 7 offers bugger all compelling selling points over something like 6E for sparsely populated (i.e. practically anywhere in Oz) residential use. Even 6E is of dubious value in most homes.

        • Yes, which is why they are both technically pointless.

    • +3

Wifi 7 is not even approved as a standard yet. They have also recently announced a delay in standard process. Late 2024, more probably early 2025.

  • I have this and absolutely love it. The array of ports is great when you have multiple devices plugged in, in my case were using 6 ports while troubleshooting a cable problem but typically it's 4 ports. I've tried the 2.5G port and it syncs at those speeds, am yet to try the SFP+ as we just don't have a use for it.

The software interface is great too and many features that other brands have behind a paywall are free with Asus. Their parental controls could be better though as it relies on MAC address only and with most smartphones now randomising it, it's practically a redundant feature.

Wifi coverage on this unit is absolutely nuts, it has further reach than any other unit we've used, even when we had multiple mesh nodes scattered around the house and the wifi speeds are also great, 800mbit on a speed test which is 300-400 more than our deco x68s. We do have ours wall mounted though which might help with that, note that there are no slots for wall mounting! We had to use some random brackets from Bunnings to have the unit sit in between them.

I'd honestly be embarrassed having this router anywhere visible. At least it doesn't have LEDs on the legs too.

Decent brand though, I guess. With good runs of firmware updates.

    • +10

You might need a little more resilience if your router embarrasses you. Unless of course it does so by announcing your browsing history.

    • +2

      Agree.

This thing looks like the design department allowed their year 10 work-experience kid design the aesthetics. It would stand out anywhere you placed it, screaming tackiness.

Seems to have good specs. however.

  • I've got the ASUS RT-AX82U and the wifi speeds don't reach over 500Mbps when testing with iperf. Anyone with this router tested the router internal network speed on wifi?

    • If you've got an AX router and you're not getting past 500Mbs, you've got a problem with the client device or interference/contention with other devices, or a problem of distance.

The problem is unlikely to be the WAP itself.

    • +1

Honestly why would you need anything more?

I have gt-ax6000 and get around 700mbps. But this is overkill.

      • Mainly for internet e-peening, far as I can tell. Especially with the state of NBN and slow links to homes.

Single-client throughput tests are pretty much utterly pointless and don't show how a wifi network will perform under load, with contention, or with clients at range.

I'm running AC still, but with gear that's reliable and designed to work with lots of simultaneous clients.

@sureyoucan if you're running iperf tests, are you using UDP? I've found that can make a big difference to throughput figures.

        • +1

I agree. I have tested the network when on load with 3 4k streaming from plex server along with 3 camera doing 2k continues recording on the nas and around 30 network devices on my gt-ax6000 and I can see speed of around 400+ on my wifi. Router is rock solid with plenty of resources still available. Running merlin on it.

Previously had Tp-link and orbi both struggled on this.

      • You’ll find that even cheaper routers than yours get higher speeds than that so the same could be said about a lot of routers. It’s not just about the speed.

      • how do you have such a good upload speed? who's your ISP?

        • I am nz based with 1gig fibre.

  • Hi all off topic question
We have moved where there is no NBN for a few months

    What is next best option?

    • +6

      5g, 4g or Starlink.

  • How much of an upgrade over the ISP given modem for home NBN is this?

  • Can't believe how much some routers cost. I'm glad I don't have a fancy set up with a hundred devices utilising wifi 6, my peasant router running openwrt serves us fine handling gaming, multiple 4k streams etc. with no issues

  • We're in a smallish double storey townhouse and our TPLink is dropping out upstairs - would this router signal be much more powerful with spaceX level antennas? Or better to go Mesh at the same price point?

    • +1

It will all depend on the router position and walls/construction of the house. Nobody can reply accurately if you will have full coverage with a single router.

Just for context I had AC series orbi 2 pack router which I replaced with one gt-ax6000 and still am getting better coverage then orbi.

It might/might not be true for you. Again don't know which tplink router you have to compare with.

In general this routers are one of the best in terms of coverage.

      • Thanks. Just a standard TP link archer low tier like $150 one.
Absolutely hard to know with walls etc. Might give this a whirl.
Is the rapture much better for $50 more?

        • Yes. Considering it is a triband and no fan. Plus much better hardware for $50

      • How much better was the GT AX6000 than the orbi? Speeds better as well?

        • +1

Way better in everything. But orbi was ac2300 I think so older wifi5 with shared 5ghz backhaul even though I had hardwired it. I wish I had jumped to asus sooner.

I think I was getting around 250-300mbps with orbi. Getting around 700 with asus. But range of asus is 15-20% more than 2 orbi I had. Plus parental controls, aiprotection, ddns, vpn(use it to access my home server) & more.

        • +1

It also has 2x2.5g lan ports which is great to either extent the local network at higher speed or for another node.

  • Any idea how many clients the GT-AX11000 can handle? And would it be possible to create a separate 2.4 ghz channel for smart home items?

    • You have option to combine both 2.4 & 5 ghz channels or have them separate. You have additional guest network which can have the same combined or separate networks. Essentially can have 4 different networks.

I have a combined main network for home use and 2.4ghz guest network for iot/smart home devices. I also don't broadcast guest network so nobody can see it as well once all devices are connected and paired.

Not sure on how many clients, but I believe more than 64 maybe. Currently have around 39 devices connected on my router.

      Edit:

With this specs, I am confident that the ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 will perform really well and Asus tested the Wi-Fi to be able to support up to 64 devices connected per band.

      • Thank you for the reply. Did you also consider any axe series router (say axe 7800) over this?

        • I don't see any benefits in getting 6e currently and paying a premium on it. I see it's at $589. I paid around $400 for my GT-AX6000 which will last me couple of years atleast before I need to upgrade. Don't have any 6E devices yet so not to concern on it.
