How to Make Ducted No IR Air Conditioner SMART?

Hi All,

We bought a house recently and it has ducted aircon with a controller with two zones. Manufacturer Mitsubishi Electronics. It’s over 10 years old.

The controller doesn’t have a remote control ie IR to connect devices like sensibo.

What are my options to make this dumb aircon controller smart?

I have seen this Airtouch clubbed with traditional ducted units to make it smart. https://www.airtouch.net.au/smart-air-conditioning/

It may support their wifi module. I have a Mitsubishi ducted unit and added on the basic wifi module so have app based control and timers.
(Being 10yrs old it may not, but worth investigating)

send it to an australian uni as a full fee paying student

    • he just wants SMART, not FULL-ON GENIUS

Most ME units (split and ducted) have communication interface that can work with arduino or esp8266/esp32 board, search for spi wifi interface of your brand on github.com and you will find one, but some coding and soldering might be needed, and you probably need home assistant for it to work well too.

I have a Mitsubishi ducted system that was installed in 2010. You can get an adapter that plugs into the board in the unit in your ceiling. It then gives you Wifi control and can integrate it into Home Assistant.
