Solar Installers - Captain Green Solar NSW

Received a quote for Captian Green Solar in NSW. Their pricing seems incredibly competitive, talking about $4200 for a 6.6kw system, 15 panels plus inverter, which is about $1500 cheaper than many other quotes that I have received. Bit of a high pressure sales vibe, but hard to argue with that pricing.

Anyone had any experience with them? Solar quotes shows them as having a lot of positive reviews in NSW. Same with Google, but a lot of the reviews are from people with just 1 review? If any one has recommendations for a competitively priced solar installer, would like to hear?

Lots of fake reviews. I'd be wary of them…

  • I got quoted from Bard recently, they Costco and Ikea should be similar pricing.

Not sure if I understand what you are saying…

      • I meant third party solar companies with Ikea or Costco sells similar pricing for 6.6kW system.

High pressure isn't even the start of it. I wound up getting daily phone calls from them while I was deciding who to go with, then they kept calling when I told them I didn't want to go through them, then kept calling after I had signed a contract with someone else, then started calling to see if I was happy with my solar install and if I wanted them to come take a look at it (???).

Wound up going with Variety Solar because they were cheaper for the better system I got and they didn't annoy the piss out of me. They contracted out the install but it was very well done, setup the wifi on my inverter for me, did a great job cleaning up and zero issues in the 6+ months since install.

    • Was this is NSW? What did you get and how much did you pay?

I got my system from them. Great job and great install. Left the area clean and tidy. Had one of the better reputations when I did my reseach a couple of years ago.

FWIW, I got a them to install a solar system in VIC.

Did a reasonable job, on time. Helpful with the rebate forms.

Your actual experience will vary depending on the individuals installer who does your job.

they use contracted installers so the quality may depend on who you get…

i had mine from them about 6 years ago… they were good. installers not so good, they gave me a 10% for the bad service the installer gave me at the time.

i had 2x warranty replacements of inverter which was solaredge and they helped facilitate the inspection and replacement of the inverter, so on that part i guess they were pretty good.

When we put put solar PV in a few years back I did a lot of due diligence. Settled on a well regarded company that had been established for a number of years. There was a premium ($$$), but I expected that. Everything went great with no disappointments.

18 months ago we added a storage battery after a cold canvasser came knocking. I did a little bit of research, but well below what I would usually do - the company had been in the game for about 18 months.

Lots of delays for the installation and many disappointments afterwards, with the total bill coming up $5k (33%) above original quotation.

On the upside the battery maker, LG , is highly reputable. In the end we contacted them to resolve issues left by the supplier & installer, which they did quickly & efficiently. The inverter mob (Goodwe) have also been very helpful.

    There are lessons there somewhere.

    • who did your battery install and what did you get if you don't mind me asking.

      • Local long established electrical mob. I'm in regional AU.
        The battery is LGchem.
FYI issues all along have been with the supplier, not the installer so much.

That said, no regrets now. It's all working well. Just too long getting there.

PS I can't mention names due to mediation agreements that came out the disputes

        • no worries.. how big was the battery and how much did it cost?

          • @Archi: 10kWh battery. The original quote was 6.8 grand after subsidies. As I said I failed due diligence, and the fine print got me. The final bill came to $15k. After mediation it became 11k.

I'd rather not discuss it 😭

            • @ArskinF: Ohhh… that's tuff mate, got me all excited at 6.8K

              all in the past now.

              • @Archi: If I were to do it again I'd only consider a fixed price quotation

  • I was told repeatedly that I was removed from their systems and yet I kept getting spam.

I would not transact with a company who has such an investment in aggressive/spammy sales.
