Thule Aion 28L Backpack (Black) $125.00 + $15.90 Delivery ($0 with $300 Order) @ Bob Leisure Germany

120

I really, really don't need another backpack, but alas, the deal was just too good. This is a pretty well-reviewed backpack from reviewers such as Packhacker and OneBagTravels. It is 28L in size, but expandable to 32L. The waxed canvas material shows scratches easily. Whether or not this "adds character" or "looks dirty af" depends on your personal philosophy. RRP on the same website is $263.75, $301.15 on Amazon and around $300 for some other places based on a quick google search.

Now, regarding the website. I was incredibly skeptical since the Australian Bobleisure website didn't show up on google search. If you google it, you'll find the regular Bobleisure.com, which is highly rated on Trustpilot. For extra safety, I did compare the two website's registration data on ICANN and can confirm that they match; they're a German company apparently. Further, I've created the account on the Australian website and the same account works on the regular website, so they're probably legit.

  • Price back to normal?

    • It seems so. Well that sucks.

  • I missed it, bugger. Any good recommendations for a good travelling backpack?

    • I can recommend a few. How big do you want the backpack to be and what's your budget?

      • I'm gonna hijack this,

Looking for a 30-35l bag, need something at least 50-55cm in length as tallboi. Something that wouldn't look too ugly in office space as well.

        I was looking at https://www.wandrd.com/products/prvke?variant=39289416187984

But it's overpriced for photography features I don't need.

        What can you recommend?

For something that wouldn't look too ugly in the office space, the first thing that came to mind for me was Thule again. The one I posted above is more travel-oriented and can look pretty rugged, but they have a couple of more professional, techy kind of look like this Thule EnRoute, which unfortunately is a bit too short at 47.5 cm. This Thule Subterra is slightly bigger and is 52 CM, reviewed here. The Peak Design and Aer backpacks I posted below should also fit nicely since they are 53 and 55 cm tall respectively. The peak design is 30L, but can be expanded to 35L, while the Aer is a 35L backpack that you can cinch down using the compression straps to make it slimmer if needed. These bags are well-regarded, though they do come at a pretty steep price.

For something cheaper, honestly, I find it kinda hard to recommend something at that size that doesn't look ugly. Brands like Osprey sell great 30-35L backpacks at a decent price, but they look outdoorsy.

            @Kio: Thanks amigo,

I really appreciate it. It's been a struggle because your absolutely right, there just isn't anything that kinda hits all the same notes for a lower price. have a great night!

      • 30-35L (40L max). I'm 178cm tall, with longer legs than torso. budget is flexible, as I would like to carry my mini drone, mirrorless camera and a couple of spare lens but be able to change it up depending on what I'm doing for a given day. I plan to use it for multiple purchases when I'm not travelling too.

For reference, I currently use the AER duffle pack 1 or 2 from about 8-9 years ago. It's still great but not that good for travelling more recently.

If you want to change it up depending on what you're doing, then the best option is to buy a bag with one large compartment without much organization. For quite a low budget, you can grab the Quechua Escape 500 32L backpack from decathlon:

          https://decathlon.com.au/products/hiking-backpack-32l-nh-esc…

Here's a review that's going to be quite relevant, considering that the guy also packs a mini drone in the bag. One downside of this bag is that the materials are obviously not as premium as the top brands, and it does look rather floppy if you are not packing it full, but if that's alright with you, this is a highly recommended, flexible backpack.

On the complete price spectrum, you can have something like the Aer Travel Pack 3 and the Peak Design Travel Pack. Both are among the most popular travel backpacks, though that comes at an incredibly steep cost. The Peak Design backpack is rather well-structured so it's going to hold its shape pretty decently when not fully packed. Pretty sure both of them come with a lifetime warranty so it's a buy-once-cry-once kind of deal. Rushfaster also allows easy returns if you want to try them out.

Edit: oh yeah, one more bag I would like to add is the Osprey Daylite 26+6. I have this bag and I love it. When used in the unexpanded 26L form, it retains a pretty small form factor that works well as a daily carry option, but when expanded it holds a surprising amount of gear. Plus, for its capacity, it's incredibly light at around 800 grams. One major downside of this bag though is its availability. I have to get it imported all the way from Germany.

@Kio: I have the Decathlon Quechua 32L as my onebag, very impressed for the dollars

          • @Kio: Thanks, I really like the Peak Deisng Travel Pack and it reviews well. Not too big in the 30L with lots of options for additional packing cubes(and my 6L sling and tech pouch that can fit in there nicely). I found it for 350 odd for ebayplus through the nofrills store for anyone interested.

      • Another shameless hijack. I had a few crumpler backpacks but find the design and quality getting poorer over time.

Looking for a new backpack that is used primarily for work travels(laptop) but also versatile enough to use for travelling with toddlers. Am planning to travel with my toddler overseas for a couple of days so I need a backpack that can store various toddler things whilst being easy to access/reach for… :)

Preferably something that looks cool(make all other dads jealous), dignified(dad here) and lightweight/durable. No budget.

Unfortunately, the more popular bag brands don't make 'em lightweight. I almost wanted to recommend the Peak Design Travel backpack for its sheer durability, but it's one of the heaviest bags of its size; 1.44KG for a 30L bag is no joke. The Aer Travel Pack 3 I mentioned is even heavier at a whopping 1.87KG.

The Decathlon Quechua bag I mentioned above is pretty light at 1.1 KG and has a decent laptop compartment. One good thing about the bag is that it has a vertical clamshell opening, so you can open the bag almost fully like a suitcase, which makes it easy to access things. This kind of vertical clamshell opening is one of my favorite features on travel backpacks since it makes packing so much easier. It won't make other dads jealous because personally, I think that the bag looks kinda ugly, though it is highly functional and is an excellent value.

For something that looks badass, I recommend the ULA Dragonfly. It is featherweight at around 850 grams, looks great if you get the all-black version, and has the same vertical clamshell opening. Downsides are its price, availability (they're not a very big company so they can only make so much at a time) and lack of organization like quick access pockets, pen pockets, etc. Reviews here and here.

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 30L might be worth mentioning. Quite a looker to me, though it's not particularly lightweight at 1.3 KG. Has the vertical clamshell opening as well. Review here.
