Inflated price? What is so special about this?

    • Yeah most definitely inflated. Still a good price for an infrared clinically accurate thermometer.

    • -2

      It is not accurate

        • +1

I have a couple similar ones, they are not as accurate as the Braun ThermoScan.

          • +10

@congo: Yeah ok. So you don't have this specific thermometer and you thought it would be a great idea to share your thoughts on its accuracy, even though you've never used it?

            • @h0dl: Go ahead and buy one, you will see what I mean.

              • +5

@congo: Thanks for the warning. I have the Braun ThermoScan ear thermometer. It's said to be the one of the most accurate for home use despite not being intended for clinical use. I'm getting this infra red because it's easier to use on the kids when they are sick. Will definitely cross check with the Braun. Will definitely report back if there's serious discrepancy.

                • @georgiechan: Keen to hear back on this @georgiechan

                • +1

@georgiechan: For me getting the most accurate thermometer is very important. Can't go cheap on it.
I have used many forehead ones and they are always a few point decimals off.
I am just stating my experience. Everyone has the right to buy whatever they want.

                  • @congo: It's like buying headphones and IEM. It's common knowledge the sound quality from bluetooth is not as good as the cables. I held out from wireless for as long as I could remember but eventually give in for outdoor use.

There is a fine line between good and good enough. My kids are still young and sometimes wouldn't tell me they are unwell. If a quick preliminary check on them helps me discover they are in fever, it's good enough for my use case. Will definitely use my Braun for final measurement.

                    • @georgiechan: Yes, which is why I have these forehead ones as well.
My statement (which got negs) is:

                      It is not accurate

My point is they are not 100% accurate.
If your child has a very high fever, you have to cross check it with Braun. You cannot reply on this as it is not 100% accurate.

                      • @congo: Not sure why you got negged. Will upvote yours.

To be fair, sometimes I got quite a big difference in readings from the left and right ears using the Braun. Still need judicial and common sense interpretation just like using the infra red.

                        • @georgiechan: Yes I always get difference in readings from the left and right ears, its correct, that how the human body works.
I take the higher of the two readings.
                          Thanks!

              • +3

                @congo: I don't think anyone wants a "I think I have a fever thermometer".

Most people can figure that out them selves.
You need something that will actually tell if you are having a fever or not, can make a huge difference when you go to your GP or when to go to ED.
Just front up for an in ear thermometer or oral. The infra red and forehead ones are approximate at best.

A bit different case when you want to check the hot plate temp of your 3D printer though :)

                • @sn809: good for children, specifically babies and toddlers.

                  • @twotwotwo: What if the forehead thermometer gets it wrong? What is the worst-case scenario?
To be safe, especially for babies, I would always use couple different thermometers.

          • @congo: Is it really worth paying $130 for braun thermoscan?

            • @AustriaBargain: Get the slight cheaper models with out fancy lights colours etc. Often will be cheaper via amazon us if you have prime or ebay.

            • @AustriaBargain: You can get the older models for under $100 on sale.
When your little one has a fever it is important to know if he/she needs to go to hospital or not.
              It's worth it.

  • Cant speak for this brand but overall these seem much cheaper post covid! Wow.

  • Thanks OP, got one.

+$4 for an in ear thermometer as well?
Same brand and the tympanic membrane measurement would arguably be more accurate?
Highlights the grossly inflated RRP of this one.

Googled them, and the first result I found was for USD30/

    https://www.andatechdistribution.com.au/collections/medsense

Total BS RRP, deal doesn't deserve recognition.

    • $30 USD is still $47 AUD

      • Yes, I am totally aware of that. But the RRP is so BS that we should not allow crap like that. Medsense doesn't make these, they just slap their logo on utterly generic stuff being pumped out of China.

  • +13

I reckon these are probably just worth the $25 rather than the RRP… - I went searching on google (only took 5 minutes to get image matches) and found some identical units (same OEM manufacturer Shenzhen Pango Electronic Co Ltd) with the same button layout and case design:

The Pangao PG-IRT1602 Non-Contact Forehead Infrared Thermometer
    https://www.alphafirstaid.com.au/product/pangao-infrared-for…

The TKING PG-IRT1602 Non-Contact Forehead Thermometer
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Non-Contact-Thermometers-Thermomet…

The MedSense Infrared Forehead and Ear Thermometer TFE02 is exact same unit as https://www.pangaomedical.com/infrared-thermometer/forehead-…

Confirmed via TGA (https://www.tga.gov.au/resources/artg/333214) that Andatech sells badged oem products from Shenzhen Pango Electronic Co Ltd

      Wow, you are the man!

    • Cost of these are around ~$7 usd/~A$10 https://x.alibaba.com/Av2F0N, perhaps someone can find a model on aliexpress for around that price?

    • +1

I have said above that it is better to go with Braun ThermoScan.
Not worth the risk to save $50.

  • I remember was searching for thermometer and came across this brand a while ago, how comes it doesn't have any review yet.

  • It shows $30.99 for me

  • +1

Sticking to good old mercury thermometers. Don't need anything fancy or electronic.

    Here come the downvotes

    • Do you have young kids?

    • Unless you insert that inside the rectum, you never get accurate results, also very hard to use with kids.

      • +1

I've had nothing but accurate results on mercury. Done the comparisons myself with GP electronic ones too after testing and wasting money on electronic ones, both cheap and expensive ones.

Don't mind either, just feel it's unnecessary to go through the pain of finding the electronic ones that actually work without getting significantly different results on every scan and leaving you wondering. Same result every time on mercury.

And if one is old enough to have kids, you probably grew up on these being placed in your mouth or underarms. Rectum, oh well…
