What Are These Small Holes All over My Backyard?

Hi Gardening Experts,

We have been finding these small holes all over my backyard and not sure what’s causing it.

We are extremely scared of snakes and lizards. I haven’t seen any rodents or ants in our property.

Can someone tell me what’s making these holes?

    probably black lawn beetles

We are extremely scared of snakes and lizards

lizards? wtf? are you related to the poster here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/761991

  • Wolf spiders. They are harmless. Leave them be.

    • That was my first thought. We had an “outbreak” of them a few years ago and at night you could see hundreds of the little things everywhere.

Oh great, I'm sure OP is relaxed now. They are only "extremely scared of snakes and lizards", not teeming hordes of giant spiders :)

Go to the lawn at night, and hold a torch close to your head. You will see bright reflections from the eyes of the spiders. Otherwise, they can be hard to spot.

Great, now I won’t be able to sleep at night. I can deal with lizards and snakes but not infestations of spiders.

      • +8

especially the ones that lurk underneath beds and climb up on to your pillow and into your ear at night and then lay eggs there

        • I had a friend who was having trouble hearing and when they looked in his ear there was a leech in there. Also you get brain and eye worms. The world is scary enough without the theoretical.

Fortunately since we replaced our old weatherboards with Colorbond cladding we don't get a lot of spiders anymore.

Why the hell would you be scared of lizards?

    Probably spider holes.

    Beetles or small frogs.

Nocturnal lizards and snakes love 'em. But only the scary ones that come out when the home owner is sleeping with a window slightly ajar

We are extremely scared of snakes and lizards

    Lol. Lmao even

  • I got scared of a lizard yesterday, removing long grass and had the "oh shit is that a snake jump back reaction"
    .

Were you scared of a lizard or startled by an unknown creature that you then identified as a lizard?

That's the hole Jv lives in

They're made by a dangerous species of wombat. They eat rats, dogs, and toenails. Make sure you wear shoes.

  • Looks like Man Eater Spider holes to me, i would recognise them anywhere, pretty common in your region, too late to do much, probably just torch the place and move on, good luck and god speed!

  • Lizards and snakes in OZ don/t burrow holes to live in bar one snake that is not in the Sydney basin. Nearest it gets to Sydney is around 1,500k.

If you are on the north shore it maybe Bandicoots.

Fill it with water and see what crawls out

    Crabs

  • Spiders, but be aware that there is possibility that it could be the Sydney Funnel web, but google how to catch them otherwise fill the holes in after spraying the holes.

Wow I didn’t realise i would get that many responses. Yes we are also terrified by spiders. My wife just read this post and we will have trouble sleeping.

Can someone recommend what insecticide we can spray all over the lawn to kill the spiders or mole crickets? Appreciate if someone can share a link to Bunnings. There’s plenty of insecticides that doesn’t work.

Also regarding lizards we grew up in a big city (outside Australia) where we much education on snakes, lizards, spiders. Most of the folks around us always feared them. It’s wonderful to see Aussie kids are well educated here and they don’t have phobias like some of us.

  • FYI I found this lizard in the backyard. I ran and closed all the doors. Is this the one making these holes? What sort of lizard is this?

It's a type of skink, it's totally harmless. They feed on small insects and other bugs. It will be more scared of you than you are of it. I don't think they make holes in the ground though. The holes are more likely beetles.

    • +1

Try and get comfortable with the skink type lizards. They'll keep the insect population at bay.

    • It's a skink. You chose to move to a country where this sort of wildlife is everywhere, you are going to have to toughen up and get used to it.

Can also confirm these are harmless skinks, the cutest and smallest creatures to have in your backyard. Used to have them run around mine as a kid - even caught a few when I was super young. They will always run away from you if you see them; but even if you somehow manage to catch one, their tiny toothless mouths can barely nibble at anything and felt more like a massage than anything else.

Could you please send me a link to kill the beetles? I’m not sure if it’s mole crickets.
    I’m currently looking at this?

Oh for Gods sake. DO NOT KILL OUR LIZARDS, CRICKETS OR SPIDERS. This is Australia. You decided to move and live here.

Can't wait till you see a snake, Goanna or even a Huntsman.

  • if it makes you feel better, here's a hole from the nature strip outside my house in Brisbane https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/37385/108035/hole.jpg

don't go spraying chemicals everywhere, just leave the things alone. it's just some harmless insect.

Thank you guys. We have decided not to buy any insecticides as I agree with Curlcurl. We decided to move to Australia and it’s their native land.

We are trying to watch YouTube videos how not to get scared of lizards but it’s not helping. I wish I had schooling here as I moved during my higher education. My silly community didn’t help getting rid of reptiles and insects.

If we see snakes or big spiders I think I’ll have a heart attack.

  • Has someone aerated the lawn?
