To save some clicks - "software for music creation and performance"

  • I won't comment on my own situation, however almost everyone I know pirates Ableton Live. It's just so expensive.

    • I don't know if this is still true or if people have found a way around it, but cracked copies of Live leave (or used to leave) an indelible watermark on the exported audio. Something to be aware of. If you use Live a lot, this is a very reasonable price for an amazing piece of software.

    • I don't, but I can understand why people do.. especially now Ableton seems to expect to get paid $350 every 3 years to keep up to date.

      • as much as I hate paying for subscriptions, $115 per/year isn't a ridiculous price to pay for the DAW, the main tool of music recording/production. The price of plugins on the other hand… but from what i know (very little) Ableton has some great built in plug-ins as well?

        • That is $115 per year, plus $1100 upfront for the license(full price). Very expensive for a hobbiest.

Ableton has amazing plugins, which is why they can get away with being so expensive.

I am going to skip 12, as it doesn't look like that big of an upgrade anyway.

          • @Aureus: If you're a hobbiest you firstly shouldn't be buying the Suite for $1,100 when the Standard or even Lite version would be fine. Secondly you don't need to upgrade on every version. I have version 8 (released in 2009) and it still works fine.

            • @gosm: Suite was worth it for me, but yeah it does make sense to skip multiple upgrades until there is actual value in the upgrade price.

@Aureus: Yeah, what I should have said is you don't necessarily need Suite as a hobbyist. If you've got the money and want it, then sure why not.
