New High End Gaming PC Build, Any Recommended Tweaks / Deals?

Thinking about going for this new pc build soon, will wait if any deals pop up in the next week for black friday but I'm not sure if anything that good is likely to appear.

Wanting to be able to game on my LG C2 at 4k 120hz (Baldurs Gate 3, Flight Sim 2020, cyberpunk, horizon forbidden west when it comes out)

Also wanting to go for a 7900XTX as I'd like to be able to use my PSVR2 headset on it and I've been following the person working on making that happen who says AMD is probably going to be the only option for quite a while.

I'd love to be able to find a 7900XTX with a usb-c port to help with this (would have to buy an expensive adaptor otherwise) but I've been unable to find any that are still in stock.

Mostly looking for any advice on if there are any hidden deals or compatibility issues they might see :)

  • I'm not up to date enough on hardware to answer, but post it to the buildapc subreddit too maybe, they do this all day

  • The recent BPC deal is still the best in terms of performance-per-dollar.

You really can't go wrong with it if you want a future-proof build for the next 5 years or so that'll crush any games at 4K resolution.

Plus there's a very good selection of upgrade options if the default specs are not to your liking.

My only advice would be to consider how likely you think the PSVR2 thing is.
DLSS is miles better than FSR and if you're wanting to hit 4k/120hz I feel like DLSS will help you achieve a much better result.

If you can fix the link to the partpicker list I can give some more 2cents!

    • whoops fixed the link! Good point regarding DLSS.

  • Any case fans OP? Would definitely recommend given you're building in a Terra and have beefy components.

Could you stretch to at-least a 750W PSU? For that extra headroom just in case for any spikes under load.

Also make sure your CPU cooler has sufficient clearance for your RGB RAM.

    • Yep I'd defs add some fans, got a few already so will probably just use those, and I had my filters wrong on power supply, was thinking 800+ W

  • Only thing I'd clarify is what you mean by game at 4k 120hz? Do you want 120fps at ultra?

My 4090 will hit that with RT off. RT on is about 70-80. RT Overdrive/Path tracing drops me to 30 FPS if I don't use DLSS

    • Don't really care too much about RT, its nice in some games but performance cost seems too high even if I had a 4090. And not necessarily ultra, happy with high settings.

      • Another thing is since you are spending so much, might as well go for CL30 6000hz. It's not much price difference.

Finally, AMD recommends 750w minimum for 7900xtx for a good quality PSU. Probably 850 if not

        • swapped out the PSU already, I was meaning to go 850w but had filter set wrong. Thanks for input on ram!

  • Currently have an i7-10700F, my other option was stick with that for an extra generation or 2 and save a lot of $$ this time. But wasn't sure how much of a bottleneck that would be for the 7900XTX

    • especially for FS2020, seems to be quite cpu bound

      • You’ll be bottlenecking.

RAM: Change this for CL30 at 6000Mhz.

CPU Cooler: You'll need a better cooler. Something like a ID Cooling IS-55 or Thermalright AXP90-X53.

    • agree on the cooler, I'd personally go a Deepcool AK620 for $99 or an AIO for a little bit more $.

      • Good cooler but too big for the case. Also AIO compatibility issues with the case too.

  • Hang on, since when does PSVR2 work on PC?

    • Hopefully by the end of the year if you have an AMD card! https://twitter.com/iVRy_VR

      • Interesting. I'm currently using Quest 2 and Reverb v2 for pc, and PSVR2 for ps5.

Would be good to cull the fleet.

JayzTwoCents a prominent tech youtuber had a video on how he was stopping the use of amd on his main rigg as it was having alot of unexplained memory issues that got worse over time. So i would make sure you know what you are getting into before going the full amd route for this generation.

  • The cooler you have there is not enough to cool the 7800X3D per Noctua's own website: https://ncc.noctua.at/coolers/NH-L9a-AM5-cooler-84/cpu/all/A…

Thermal headroom is nice on X3D for boost clocks. Look at the NH-D12L if you want Noctua? Plenty of other good coolers out there. Fractal Terra is also definitely a luxury case and is a place to cut corners. I am a big fan of Cooler Master's NR200/NR200P, easy to build in, cheap, and not much less compact than the more hectic ITX cases.

      • I meant in conjunction with a different case, thanks for pointing it out.

/r/sffpc is a great resource. Plenty of other people are putting high spec Fractal Terra's together. It is a hot case so OP will struggle to cool it properly. Nvidia cards are popular in sff due to the lower heat output.

Either do the build yourself using the component tips provided, or have a custom build done for you.

  • Here’s my build:
Cyberpunk is a breeze at 120fps @ 4k on my A80k with some optimised settings. Framegen is worthwhile. Check subreddit OptimizedGaming for getting the best settings without losing picture quality and frame rates.

    CPU: AMD 7800X3D
Motherboard: MSI MAG B650m tomahawk wifi
    RAM: GSkill Trident Z5 Neo CL30 6000mhz 16gb x2 (amd expo ready)
    HDD: Kingston KC3000 2TB
Power supply: MSI AGF 850 watt psu
I don’t have this cooler but the reviews are incredible.
Deepcool aio ls720 or ls520 depending on your case size.
I’m running a NZXT H5 Flow and the case fans are whisper quiet.

I would suggest swapping out the motherboard for the mag tomahawk and not using team group nvme drives.

The OP is getting a mini-ITX case so wont fit what you are suggesting.

      • Missed that part. Definitely not.

  • Tacking on to this thread for some feedback.

Close to pulling the trigger on an ITX build (below) with Scorptec, but with all these ~$3k pre built deals popping up, the bang-for-buck appeal is tempting.
I'd prefer an ITX build, but its not a sticking point.
