Free Domain Name Transfer from Google Domains + 1 Extra Year of Registration @ WordPress.com

90

This deal will allow you to transfer your domain name to Wordpress.com from Google Domains and receive a free transfer plus an additional year of registration on any gTLD's. WordPress.com has no requirements to use the WordPress managed hosting.

You can just register your domain names there and delegate your name servers elsewhere like you would it any other registrar they also offer and include WHOIS Privacy and DNS hosting as well as email in URL forwarding with HTTPS support.

Once you've started the transfer, you can approve the outbound transfer immediately with Google, which will allow the transfer to complete within 20 minutes to WordPress.com, allowing you to skip the mandatory 5 to 7 day waiting period. You can see the process outlined in the WordPress.com transfer guide here

The only restriction on the deal is the domain names needed to be registered before 1 July 2023 essentially, before the acquisition of Google Domains was announced by Squarespace. When doing a WHOIS Lookup the domain name will need to be showing as "Squarespace II" for the registrar of record to be eligible.

gTLD's are governed by ICANN policies, So the domain name on transfer will need to stay with WordPress.com for the first 60 days, but can be transferred out immediately afterwards to another registrar for their transfer fee which will add another additional your registration gTLD's can have up to a maximum of 10 years of registration.

You may want to consider taking advantage of Google's pricing error in Turkish lira for renewals first and seeing if this offer is available after the 60 days has elapsed still.

Original offer posted here, but I have expanded on it above.

Update: Offer Still Valid as of 15th of May 2024.

I can't see why you wouldn't be able to do that, and someone has already posted that which is good news, because I didn't really want to write that one up.

  • Is google domain now porting out only?

    • Yeah, you can transfer domain names out or get moved to Squarespace but in the meantime, you can still do renewals until you get moved to the Squarespace system. New registrations are done on the new Squarespace system.

  • What happens to websites hosted on sites.google.com?

    • No changes have been announced at this time for that product and your ability to control that will stay with Google if you own a domain name that will be moved to squarespace and you will control it there and it will continue to point to your Google products! and those products will stay under the control of Google.

If you're talking about in regards to moving your domain name to Wordpress.com you'll have to re-configure DNS in their DNS management system to point to the Google Site.

      • Thanks! Does that mean we might get free squarespace? Seems good if that’s the case

        • Doubt it, I've chosen my wording very carefully because Google likes to kill products and while they have not killed the Google Sites product yet I would definitely not put it past them to kill it in favour of a partnership with a third-party product.

But at the time of writing this response nothing has been announced.
