What's the deal here? Is this OzSubjectiveGoodValue or OzBargain?

    • -2

There’s a recent fad of posting motorcycle deals.

It is our bad boy phase.

        • +2

Bad Boy on a Royal Enfield?? About as bad boy as the Vespa crowd.

      • +9

        and I'm loving it

        • +6

You are getting taken for a ride.

    • +8

Introductory price. Meaning it'll increase in price after launch.
So I'd say this is a deal. How good of a deal, no idea as I'm not a motorbike kinda guy :P

    • -4

Agreed. No difference to the old raspberry pi back in stock posts

      • +6

If something sells on the secondary market for above rrp, then that same item coming back into stock for rrp is a deal…

Wow. That's a solid price. I bought my 411 Himalayan this time last year for almost the same money and based on the Euro/US pricing I thought this thing was going to be closer to $11/12K.

    Great value bike

    • +26

Not sure why you'd buy this for $11k when you can get a CB500X for about the same money.

      • +5

        this guy bikes

        • +2

My daily rider. Love it to bits, almost as much as my old CB900F Hornet.

      • +1

Or the 390 Adventure SW and CRF300 Rally that are about 30-50 kg lighter. The weight of the new RE is the downside, well that and the AF mapping issues in high altitude areas.

      • +4

And I'm not sure 9k is such a great deal when SV650 has recently been as low as 10.5k.
That just makes no sense to me.

I mean in reality I'm sure people are buying bikes for predominantly on road use. I guess I'd you want something else there are still many better options.

        • I want that bike. Unfortunately it's about 11.5k rideaway now and somehow I can't ozbargain my way into it. lol

        • +1

Not sure if trolling considering you can't take an SV650 off-road. They're completely different type of bikes.

          • +2

@bindok: I thought I made that part clear. On almost all occasions it's like a 4x4 to take the kids to school in Toorak. I wasn't trolling, in saying that apart from a small group that'll legit be off-road, yeah something like this will be great. I'm saying there are plenty of knobs that buy off road and NEVER actually go off-road. THOSE in that cohort, should buy a SV650.

      • This looks more offroad capable

        • +4

yeah comparing a dual sport quasi adventure to a road bike makes no sense

          • @tonyjzx: This place is about cents, not 'sense'. That much is ultraobvious.

          • @tonyjzx: explained it above to be clear. And that's from someone that has riden dozens of different types of bikes for 40 years now.

      • With the announcement of the NX500 I'm hoping the CB500X comes down in price so I can buy one.

        • Keep an eye on the used market. Not sure why, but I’ve had three pop up near me over the last few months: 2 x 2020 and a 2023. All still a bit expensive for my liking, but they also aren’t selling. Hoping to pick up a cheapie if they keep hanging around.

      • I so want a CB500X!
        maybe next year

      • Just thought that's where it would land based on overseas pricing. CB500X is ~6500GBP and the 450 Himalayan is around 6K

    • Does this one sounds duug duug duug duug…….

    • I thought the same.

The fact it's at this price means they value the Australian market and are being smart. It's a weird feeling, not being taken for a ride on price!

  • +6

Insanely cheap price point for what you get. I've ridden a few 350's when instructing and it served as the perfect learner bike for my father-in-law during his RE's. Royal Enfield has addressed all of the issues people had with the 350, no 6th gear, air intake was a bit low and the cluster issues.

MADtv has a great first impression, he even said if the price is under $10k rideaway they will sell like hot cakes; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGgPNt3tiNg

This is a bargain as you can bet the RRP goes up in 2024

    • They may have addressed all the old issues but everything is new and unproven on this new model

    • +4

Triumph are releasing their Speed and Scrambler 400 early next year. $9k & $10k. No coincidence the Himalayan is under $10k. Personally, I would rather the Triumph.

      • +1

Yeah, they are also built in India. Revzilla did a cool impression video and I have read editorial reviews on both bikes across different motorcycling mags; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6igdCnYjBt4. I am not arguing which bike is better value, in my opinion the price point for the 450 and its package as a whole is great value.

    • It looks quite good and reworked. I was just looking at the reviews the other day.

  • +6

umm never driven a motocycle before. But this is so effectively marketed, I'm now looking up routes through the Wakhan corridor.

    • +2

thinking of going from motorbike to moped, stuck in traffic a lot and it’s auto and rarely het above 60km going to or from work ….

      • +2

definitely more practical. Throwing a big ole bike around at slow speeds isn't fun.

      • an E-bike might also be an alternative in your case. It's a shame we are limited to 250W motor power in NSW.

      • can mopeds even hit 60km/h? rather a small displacement motorcycle because of that alone, even a 125cc is going to be a big improvement over a moped in this regard

      • just be aware that lane filtering is only legal on full license.
fwiw, the Honda CB125 is a great bike for traffic (they top out around 90km/h), also cheap. BUT due to demand, they're hard to find

  • does this require assembling?

    • +9

      When it falls apart

    • -1

Usually comes mostly assembled, just needs the wheels and and handle bars attached if it's anything like every other new bike.

    • +22

      No, that's a BIKEA

  • +5

A difficult sell when the KTM 390 adventure can be had for not much more.

    • KTM 390 adventure

It's a very nice bike, what I most love is its very low center of gravity.
But no bike is perfect so let's see how the Himalayan 450 will perform.

      • Yea agreed I'm interested to see how it goes but there's better options coming onto the market. CFMOTOs 450MT will be a winner if they compete on price.

        • CFMOTO 450MT

Indeed that one (3 models) is very hard to beat if the Chinese can compete with the prices and reliability.
The Himalayan is only on pre-order so they pretend to beat the competitors before the EICMA 2023 show LOL

        • Not sure if you saw already but CFMoto aus just announced preorder pricing of the 450MT will be $8990 too. They're also listing wet weight of 175kg which is interesting coz at EICMA that was thought to be dry weight. I'm gonna preorder tomorrow if that's correct.

    • KTM 390 adventure not as good as this for riding 5 minutes down the road to pick up a cappuccino though

      OzbRoyalEnfieldHimalayanFanClub.com.au

  • Interesting and fun to ride bike.
I did a lot or research in the older 400cc one and watched many videos on Youtube, it's a sturdy, reliable and economical bike but one of its negative point is the too low max speed so this bike isn't suitable for freeways.
This newer 450cc looks like the answer but unfortunately I couldn't find the max speed.
    https://www.bikesales.com.au/editorial/details/royal-enfield…

    • with more road congestion speed is becoming less of an issue if commuting in metro areas , though for weekend touring the freeway speed is desirable.

    • +1

It really depended on expectations. It will travel at highway speeds all day long with an average human and a small amount of luggage. 250's and 390's have been doing it for years. If you want proper comfort and low RPM's then yes you'd be better with something like a 1200cc.

    • +4

140+ kmph as per ItchyBoots who rode it in her latest series in India.

        ItchyBoots

She is the one who introduced and inspired me to the older Himalayan model.
140 Km/h is much more than what we can ride in road broken Australia, exception s for some freeways but most of the time we ride at 80Km/h an sometimes even at 40Km/h on the freeways LOL

  • does royal enfield make any non-LAMS bikes anymore? or are they all LAMS?

    • +2

      Never made any non lams

  • +2

NICE! But price appears to be normal.

  • Wow. Was looking at a CB500X, but this is a solid offering for the price. How's the reliability of RE these days?

    • +8

A new model CB500x is a way better option. Solid proven bikes with loads of customisations for on and off road.

      • loads of customisations

Honda keeps the prices low to fight the competition by stripping bikes of basic components (customisations) that you already find on other bikes LOL
CF Moto also is coming with good stuff too, I would wait EICMA 2023 to see what is coming to Australia, but no, I won't ever buy a bike on pre-order because these bikes most of the time have little or major problems here and there.

        • So are they "basic components" or customisations? And which ones has Honda supposedly stripped?

    • +4

The RE is good value but I'd bet you would come out even at the end of ownership when you got to sell. The Honda will have much better resale

      • Exactly, it will be like anyone who bought a Hyosung when they first launched. Cheap, and for a reason…you could barely give them away. Brand still matters, and anyone not a complete noob knows RE is a recycled brand name and not the same quality as it previously was.

        • Yeah. Old Hyosungs are barely worth a few hundred dollars but an equivalent SV650 is still like $5k. Same as Braap and other sub-tier brands.

RE and these brands (I’d include CF moto in this too) are great when brand new and shiny but resale is terrible and it’s not really the bargain it seems. Although might be okay if you plan to keep the bike long term.

  • +1

Nice price! I purchased the crf300 rally a few years ago and wish Id waited for a 450 like this. Don't get me wrong, the crf has been a great bike and it excels off road but that extra power would be appreciated on the highway

    • +1

The stock springs on that bike were way too soft. Swapping them out transformed that bike.

      • +1

I got my 2nd hand with 1.5k on the clock and the springs already done. Never felt the stock springs but I read/heard a lot about how terrible they were.

        • Also looking at the crf300, did increasing the rear shock preload improve things?

          • +1

@xavster: The previous owner completely swapped the rear shock and the springs in the forks. I never tried the stock suspension. It's great now.

After doing some more research on the RE450, I take back my previous comment about wishing I waited. The crf300 seems like the bike for me. Its hell reliable and plenty fast enough for off road. Also handles really well off road. My only gripe is highway riding where above 110km/h there's not a whole lot of acceleration left when you want to overtake. This also doesn't leave you alot of confidence to get out of sticky situations. However, it sits well on 110-120km/hr with the 6th gear. Its totally fine for commuting. I actually love weaving in and out of traffic. The bike is agile.

  • Will you still be vibrating after you get off the bike? I mean residual vibrations.

    • -2

      Its a twin, probably ok

      • +3

its a single, so you'd hope it works as a good vibrator

      • +3

        No it isn't

        • Please read the spec sheet

          • +1

            @JDMcarfan: ‘The Himalayan 450 is powered by a brand-new 452cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine‘

            It isn’t a twin

@UberIsCool: exactly what I said, but it seems I read your comment as disagreeing with mine above.
