  • Looking for a laptop for a student, six hour battery seems not great?

    • +2

Six hours is low, but the 15" form factor should make it a 'no go'. It's too cumbersome to lug around all day.

I'd steer clear of Acer, they are consistently poor quality and unreliable, and the couple of hundred dollars you save buying a disappointing brand works out to about a dollar a week over the lifetime of the laptop.

Keep an eye out for something like these, once they hit the $250-300 price point, which should be soon.

Thanks, appreciate the advice. I have definitely been considering refurbs. I don't quite trust my son to take care of a $1,000+ machine even if I thought it was necessary.

I've put one kid through high school buying refurbs, selling them on marketplace after 2 years and repeat. Total cost out of pocket is about two bucks per week, total risk of breakage due dumbassery at any point in time was only a couple hundred dollars, and after 5 years he now has a better laptop than the $1300 one the school wanted us to buy.

Pro tip: If you can, avoid touch screens - they're so much more fragile and they cost a fortune to repair.

          • @jcon: yeah, for touch the glass / digitiser breakage is an issue but upside is screen is easy to clean and doesn't scratch … work gave me a touch screen but no pen ….

          • @jcon: Thankfully, the school does not require touchscreen, so I am happy to avoid that.

Is 8GB RAM sufficient in your experience?

It's an Acer, the 6 hours battery life would be the smallest problem.

      • I have 2 acers, I5 gen 5, one has had keyboard replaced, other has cracked screen that I won't be repairing but they always boot up OK. In regards to battery, these laptops are designed for home users rather than school, hence the 6 hr battery when new, HDMI as you might use external monitor and charge at the same time.. If you want all day battery life need to get a corporate grade laptop as they are designed to run all day and are smaller so you can run between meeting rooms….
