I stand by these as the best pair of all round open back headphones, in their RRP category.. at $150 they are an absolute no brainer.

    • +1

      Agreed.
I bought some as a cheap(er) replacement to my 990 pros and I think they're great.

      • What do you prefer? I absolutely love my DT 990s.

There's was a really good deal on the 'EDITION' version, which is the exact same sound but less clamp force and a straight cable (plus comes with a solid plether case) for $199.

        • I mean, audio wise the 990s were better, but I had the 250ohm versions with a dac/amp.

I don't think I'll go back unless I end up going for the DT 990 Pro X model with a dac/amp again.
The HD 599 having a replaceable cable that locks in is so much more useful to me that I thought.

        • +1

I would marry my DT 990's if my wife supported plural marriage

  • Does anyone know how this fares for competitive FPS games (e.g. Valorant/CS2)?

    • +1

They're great. They're open back so have much better directional sound qualities vs closed back headsets/gaming headsets.

    • +1

get yourself a desktop microphone (Kmart Gaming Microphone works great for its price) so that you're not tied to crappy gaming headsets..

I only just recently converted to open back headphones and I was impressed in how good these sounds for games.

      • Agree. I got a Mirfak TU1 from teds for $15 after signup voucher to use exactly these for gaming.
It's been awesome and nil complaints about my audio even though I sold I nice gaming headset.
Sadly the mic isn't as cheap now at teds as was gonna link :(

        • +1

wow thats cheap… the Mirfak is now about $58 on ebay but the Kmart Gaming is only $39 and comes with its own arm. I use this mic for WFH so I know it works great!

Otherwise, there is the Fifine mic that is popular on Amazon as well:

i think we are at an era where you dont need to spend money on expensive Blue Yeti or Rode mic unless you need to have more than 1 person (Podcast interviews, etc).

          • +1

@meong: yeah I was happy to pay $24.95 then saw a $10 off voucher for new customers haha!
Works well, it's about a meter from me too and off to the side so not even remotely close

      • Same… got this one the last time it was on deal pricing and paired that with a Blue Yeti desk microphone when it was on deal pricing as well.

Literally game changer in terms of microphone quality. Ended up shelving all the headphone mic combos that I had.

Not one issue with voice clarity from the other end when using it for voice calls.

As long as you don’t have external noise and don’t mind the whole house hearing it, they’re incredible

  • A pair of these was my only Black Friday impulse purchase after a long time recommendation of a trusted audiophile friend.

  • I'm holding out for a deal on the 6XX any advice from anyone out there in the OzB community? Worth pulling the trigger on these instead?

    • +2

If you are not an audiophile geek with amps, dacs, etc etc, then most open headphones around the $150 - $300 range will sound similar.

      • I want to learn and become an audiophile geek, I'm at the start of my journey. Looks like I'll hold out for the 6xx haha

        • +7

Don't. I jumped into the rabbit hole of headphones and realised 99% of what you read and watch online is bullcrap. I have experienced $50 - $100 headphones from Sony, Philips and even Audio Technica elcheapo model's sounding better than some $1000 headphone setups of my friend's. I personally use an old Sennheiser HD595 and also purchased the Hifiman Edition XS for $600 and also an amp and dac for $500 and guess what, I have to keep telling myself the Hifiman sound's better but truth be told, my unamped $200 10 year old HD595 sounds more 'musical' and is easier to listen to.

@Dollar Dreamer: Sounds a bit like whisky, the best one is the one you like the best so disregard what people tell you and stick to what you like. I have $60 whisky I like better than $300 whisky…

          • @Dollar Dreamer: And somehow HD595 is better than this. I know that bass is better on HD599 SE, but everything else I felt better on HD595.

          • +2

@Dollar Dreamer: Whole community is rife with people trying to justify or defend their purchasing decisions. Its one of those hobbies where people are more interested in saving face than giving actual tangible information.

If you don't already have a pair of open back headphones or are starting out - I'd still grab a pair of these anyway. They are fantastic and one of the best value for money entry level headphones you can get.

You can get the 6XX for $307 AUD (shipped to Melbourne) from massdrop if you want to spend more, but then you'll want to add in $100-150 for a DAC to truly make them shine. You may as well save your money for now and just grab these.

    • Thanks!

  • Here's my choice for bargain games/music headset if you don't mind the bulk, sound good .

    • for $50 more the 599s are still the best option tbh.

  • How do these compare to the HD 560S

    • +1

I just compared these at the store last week. The 560s sounded more neutral and clearer on the treble compared to the 599. 599 had a more 'warmer' sound with a bit more bass. I can see how some ppl could like one or the other, it comes down to preference. Personally I much preferred the 560s.

  • Do these require a DAC?

    • Nopes… Tried them with and without a DAC and couldn't hear a difference.

    • Heck no

  • Simply put, this is one of the best entry level Hi-Fi headphone which does not require an amp and multitasking, lowest price I have seen is 129 aud but 150 is still a good deal.

HD600 and above models are not multitasking anymore and they all require an amp.

    • +1

What do you mean by multitasking headphones?

      • music,gaming,movie

        • +3

          you mean all rounder

  • I wish my ugly beige ones would die so I could get these lol

    • +1

Damn i wished i got the beige ones haha

    • +2

The beige ones are mint! #noctuafan

    • It will never die. Just replace the ear pads and head pad every 3 years, that damn headphone will last 100 years.

This is the only brand comparable to Yamaha => https://versus.com/en/sennheiser-hd-599-vs-yamaha-hph-pro500

  • Are these better than the ATH-M50X ?
I dont have a dac/amp but looking for a better pair of headphones.

    • Isnt the M50 closed back though? So probably not easy to compare as some people prefer closed back

    • It's personal preference. I have both the ATH-50X and the HD599. Personally, I prefer my ATH-50X but that's me.

You can't compare because one is closed and the other is open. As they're both great, figure out if you want open or closed headphones and then you have good option for which type you prefer.

    • Fwiw I tried the M50X and did not like them at all, wasnt sure what the hype about is about. The soundstage felt super narrow and claustrophobic. havent tried these though

  • Looking at the Grado gw100x but these look tempting too.

  • how good are these for listening to music?

  • If you use these for WFH teams meetings, is there a microphone or need to buy separately?

    If so, what is recommended?

    Thanks

  • HD 600 back up to $589 now

  • Price back to $399 :-/
