dunno looks kinda fun to me

      • +21

        I like it too.

      • +41

Designed by an ex chief designer at Porsche. Has a lot of personality for a small car.

        • +13

Porsche influences are clear with the headlights. To me it reminds me of classic Porsche and a Testa front-end.

        • Was legit gonna say how this looks very Porsche 911

        • +2

This makes a lot more sense now. I saw the GWM Ora Sport when I was over in Thailand, and it was clear it had a lot of Porsche influence. Looks like the Ora EV has the same influence carried throughout its design features too.

          Poor man’s Porsche Taycan lol

          • +3

@Zackeroo: Yeah, I think they explicitly asked him to channel his work at Porsche, similar to how Genesis asked their chief designer to channel his prior work at Bentley. The inspiration in both cases is very clear, and for consumers its great to have solid design at a significantly more affordable price point.

          • @Zackeroo: Still too expensive for some people on this forum (the only explanation for bagging EV).

      • +16

Yeah I think it looks cute. And I am a middle aged man lol.

      • +13

Agree, beats another mega suv box

      • +1

It's called "ORA Good Cat" in China and it's mainly targeted at female drivers, now the design makes more sense, huh?

From configuration wise this one is quite competitive against other cheapest EVs in Australia - 3-phase AC charging and not-so-futurist and practical interior. Exterior not my dish. Though GWM seems providing different trim at different models () while BYD comes with only one feature-trim means even the cheapest model would get all driving features.

        • There's also the MG4 which is around the same price point and that design (interior and exterior) is a bit more 'traditional' but still sleek looking. I feel the interior of ORA, with the flip switches is a bit much… 😆

    • agreed, both this and the BYD Dolphin just don't quite cut it, but heck this is cheap.

      • +1

        Reminds me of Abarth design

      • +1

There's some nicer cars out there. The EX30 is one that is not too expensive yet looks good.

        • +3

How much is the EX30? Under $40K?

        • -3

"Looks good" is just you accepting that relatively it "looks good" compared to this. Otherwise generic as can be with a bit of weird flair going on in the rear.

        • There are but based on amount of negatives Im getting, mainly be Tesla 😆

    • You haven't seen the Xiaomi EV

White one is like a panda

Looks like a porsche had and ugly child

    • +7

Not as ugly as Model y

      • +1

Nothing is as ugly as a Y

        • +2

Yep, Tesla's are a special kind of ugly.

    • +17

I love that there is variety in life, one person might not like it and another does.

To me its a very cute car and I love its design, where I dont usually notice car designs much. This one stands out like the VW beetle

    • LOL… Not as bad as a model Y… I had a look inside during ev show. Wasn’t that bad. Getting to and from rear seating was huge pia though + boot space.

      • isn't it a 4 door?

        • it is. but space between rows were 🤪

    • I don't like the look personally. Yet for a car of its size compared to others, it looks better that a lot of small hatches

Porche Cayenne shrunk in the wash.

    Is that cheapest ev now?

  • +19

    EV insurance has gone nuts.

    • Where are you finding best quotes?

      • +2

Try NRMA in Qld. Base Y - $1100/year. Same as my previous ICE car.

        • Umm if an EV has the same insurance cost as an ICE vehicle that’s a great deal? EV repairs are far more expensive more often than an ICE vehicle I have to imagine because replacing the battery is basically getting a car…

          • +3

@Larsson: First years cheap. Then bam next premium is $2k.

            • +3

@Wizard: Thats every policy, you need to shop around every year

    • +19

i think insurance in general has gone nuts. seeing difference of $600 vs >$1000 for ICE vehicles.

      • +3

$630 to $1,050 in 1 year with youi, now back to $599 via Woolworths. Higher agreed value by 20% too.

        • Korban my man. For our 2016 Kia Rio, insurance is now $739.80 with Youi… madness

    • How much is the average price?

    • +2

      How come?

        • +9

Only 4 BEV fires in Australia since 2012.
Worldwide 5 BEV fires per 1 million cars.
But loads of hybrid fires which are confused with BEV fires.

        • +4

what, 4? There are WAY more ICE fires than EV fires, even when accounting for the number of vehicles.

    • +1

I paid $2800 for a Model Y Performance agree value

      • +25

Pretty much blows away any fuel savings.

I say this as a model y owner as well

        • I quoted insurance before we got it. It's the better halves daily, she was also keen on a '20 Macan GTS. Should be up after one out of warranty service 😂

        • +7

I was looking at a Seal it is ~$2000. My Stinger is $800.

          • +4

@Kommodore: You'll save that in a few fill ups. We've spent $412 on Electricity for 10,000km at 0.22c kw/h in a MYP. Twenty fill ups in the stinger at 60L ($120-$135 98RON) / 500km for say $120x 20 - 10,000km $2400 for 10,000km. Saved $1988 right there but probability dropped more in deprecation if you want to get technical. My wife had a stinger before we got the MYP. She did love that car a lot! Heavy foot and was getting 14L/100km barely 450km but she has no throttle control full stick to speed limit.

            • @SoTightEcoLPI: Love good math comparisons! :)

All for anyone buy/drive what you like but sometimes the dumb answers are grating. This is a solid answer.

Vs Stinger, odds should be in the MYP, or close too. If the depreciation could slow and the insurance ease due to insurance risk (not actual) I reckon you'd stay on top for at least 8 years.

Add in some personal value around joy and how fun the MYP is.

              • @mxlmxlmxl: I love the maths comparison, but we need a comparison between a new EV (new because there aren't many 2nd hand EVs… and we have cheap EV options now like this Ozbargain one), and 2nd hand cars… and also factor in depreciation.

I suspect many of these Chinese EVs will quite significantly drop in value because of their origin and appeal, but also because I don't feel like there's a (big) market for 2nd hand EVs - EVs are already quite niche for now (though growing very quickly).

            • +1

@SoTightEcoLPI: I drive like this in my mx5 and get 7.8L/100km

            • +1

@SoTightEcoLPI: A Stinger is not a comparison to this car to be fair

          • +3

@Kommodore: The Stinger also seems to have bottomed out a bit, don't see them dropping all that much compared to an EV.

          • +2

@Kommodore: And the stinger won't be written off immediately if it's in an accident either. Love the Stinger.

          • @Kommodore: For the performance? They told me the high power ones are way more expensive to insure.

I paid $1000 for the seal premium with the extra glass cover.

        • +3

I have serious doubts about people's claims or seem it's only in certain areas. My Model Y cost $749 in June 2023 to insure. In 2021 my previous RAV4 was $943

Both with RACV same address, both financed, no change in driver history, over 30/rating 1 etc.

        • +2

I test drove the performance. It is crazy fast and acceleration is mad. No wonder insurance is high. Would be a death trap in the wrong hands

          • @Kanjus: An insurance rep told me exactly this when I was shopping around for insurance in a BYD Seal. Performance was almost twice the price of the step down one (still over 300 horsies).

        • +3

Yes fuel savings are why people buy a Tesla Performance model 😂

      • +1

MYP - Paid $900 RAC in Perth for the same car. In my 40s

        • Yep $2000+ insurance is BS most likely in their late 20s or early 30s. my Seal P cost $1200 with AAMI new for old, rental till repaired. inner East VIC with 3 drivers all over 30s. It's around $200 more than my 7yr old Merc.

    • +15

Yep, until EV manufactures sort out the "oh this car has been in a fairly minor accident… do we still trust this battery not to catch fire?… hmm nope, we aren't putting our name to that… WRITE OFF" issue… it's only going to get worse.

      • +1

Ok but doesn't NSW already classify all write offs as total loss/non repairable?

      • +1

Yeah that's what I'm hearing too. Hopefully all the safety tech can prevent a lot of accidents in the future but that'd rely on everyone having access to it! Immediately writing off cars won't help any actual green credentials either…more write-offs, more cars, more CO2 to manufacture

      • +2

Hasn't that already been sorted with LFP batteries? I think this is just insurance actuaries having no idea about the tech and differences between cars. Best quote I got for a BYD recently was 1550 and it's not flash and has LFP, should be cheaper MG4 was 1250

I thought the issue is that Tesla's are becoming all one piece, aren't the quarter panels part of the chassis now? So you can just replace them and they are getting written off? And insurance companies are too stupid to know the difference.
