Biggest load of BS I have read in a long time.
I recently had FTTP installed, install was fine, even put where I wanted.
Was done in the rain as installer did not need go on roof.
This was 2 weeks ago, I'd take my 1st hand experience over your readings of "horror stories around FTTP upgrades" or terror from the "rando jackfruit drill into exterior walls and/or eaves".

      • Okay guess your's was not complicated but not all installs are equal. I will however ask you a few questions based on your recent experience.

My situation: My current FTTN install has a the small RJ11 socket in a bedroom/office on the opposite side of the location where the small FTTN box is located. I can see the white pipe containing the wires going into the roof cavity from the FTTN NBN box and most likely coming down again through the wall cavity where the socket and current VDSL modem is located. I can't see any PowerPoint located near the current FTTN box so I am unsure how power is being supplied back to the NBN box.

Questions: Based on your experience, please tell me:

        • Do you think they will be able to install the new FTTP/C NBN box in the same place as the old FTTN box.
        • Will I need to privately engage someone to upgrade the internal network wiring from NBN box to wall socket in bedroom because currently it's most likely using copper coax connected to an RJ11 socket.
        • Will I need to privately engage someone to install an electrical powerpoint near the current FTTN box so that it can power the FTTP/C box?
        • Will the new NBN box and the powerpoint be installed inside or outside?
        • If a technician comes and explains an complex / convoluted way to upgrade or the options presented are not acceptable, can I cancel the upgrade without any penalty?
        • You need to be asking the installer all these Q's, I can't answer because I'm not an installer and some might do what you ask, some might not.
The installer I had, he knew what he was doing but he was somewhat arrogant that I had to reign in.
When I was explaining to him that there was a loose floor board somewhat due to poor workmanship of a chippy(not licensed in anyway), the installer turned to me and told me he had done 8K installs and knew what he was doing.
At the same time, I was watching him like a hawk as his head was right near my OLED, which I warned him not to hit, which he did and looked at me awkwardly. I watched the whole install, and explained to him to be-careful of the floorboard as he could go through.

So you need to be able to control the installer, not be rude but assertive.
After the job, the installer asked for a soft drink, I said I only had bottled water, he asked if it was cold.
This is the type of arrogance that you need to avoid but have to engage if you want a positive outcome.
Yes he did know what he had to do, but it seemed like a very easy job given what he had to do.
He did complain to me that his job did not pay enough so had to do private work on the side.

Maybe this is why you hear of horror stories, NBN as a business doesn't treat the people who work for them well enough.

        • I can't see any PowerPoint located near the current FTTN box so I am unsure how power is being supplied back to the NBN box.

The FttN box is just a connection between the phone line from the street and the internal phone line.
It's the demarcation point between what is NBN's responibility to maintain and what is your responsibility to maintain. There is no power required at this external (or even internal) location as it is just protecting the wire joints from the weather.

FttP Install has 2 boxes, one external (connecting the street fibre to the house fibre) and one internal (where the FttP modem is located)
Again no power is required at the external box, as again, it's just a connection point.
Power is required to power the FttP Modem inside the house.

To get the Internal fibre run to your preferred location, I'd say maybe the tech will do it, but I wouldn't say it was likely.
They definitely will not use the Phone line as a pull cord as the FttN service remains active after install for up to 12 months (unless you, or your ISP, cancel the service on it)
I would look at installing conduit with pull cord myself to the location desired as they would be happy to use that.

A good alternative would be to get the install to a different, easier to install, area and then utilise Mesh networking hardware to locate an Ethernet port to the desired location.

If you're unwilling to compromise on install location, and unwilling to pay anything to accommodate the install to your preferred location then, as above, nobody is forcing you into this. (at least not yet)

          • @ESEMCE: Yep when the time comes for forced upgrade and 5G broadband still isn't available, I will probably buy a second 5G phone sim with large amount of data, put it in a 5G/4G modem and treat that as my broadband. Not going to go through this hassle. I have a 500GB mobile plan right now and almost all of my entertainment goes through that connection instead of NBN anyways.

    • +3

There is no use of "force" to upgrade.
So off the bat you're flat out wrong.

      Any horror stories arise due to;
      1) people who didn't read the install prerequisites,
      2) had unreasonable expectations or
      3) just didn't say no to an installer's terrible proposed install location.

Provided you have reasonable expectations for your install and you read NBN's pretty basic list of requirements (not in/near a wet area, power socket nearby,) you can direct the installer to an install location of your preference. It is your house after all!

I scoped out the best place for install, that met NBN pre-requisites.
My first preference would have been next to my switch, but that's in the laundry so unsuitable according to NBN. I didn't even propose this.
My second preference was in our Home Office/Spare Bedroom. I knew there might be issues with lights but figured it was easy enough to rectify (and I was correct)

This is where my install occurred. Precisely to my requested location on the wall.

To resolve the flashy light issue, I made a cardboard cutout that sits over the Fibre modem lights, but allows airflow through the airvents. Simple, cost maybe 2 minutes of my time and a discarded Weet-bix box. I did similar to my router lights. There's a tiny amount of leakage, but you only see it if you're looking. Nobody is losing sleep over it.

      • There is no use of "force" to upgrade.

The secret police forced my upgrade, now I have better ping and done away with the crappy copper to the pit that limits my speed.

To resolve the flashy light issue, I made a cardboard cutout that sits over the Fibre modem lights, but allows airflow through the airvents.

I folded a strip of cardboard @ right angle and placed it on the box, the secret police made me do this.

        • My solution to painful leds and unwanted nighttime lighting - a square of black electrical tape or carefully applied black texta normally sorts this issue quicksmart.

          • @Matt2024: My other solution is to have a disco and that way you don't notice the blinking lights.

        • Clarification forced upgrade = other retailers offering 100/20 on FTTN but not Tangerine and not at this price.

      • Depending on the tradies coming, u might not be able to change the location as it's big difference in effort if he has to go in the roof cavity to run the cable vs just drilling and go to nearest external wall. The one came to my house explained that reasoning (as I want it to be in the middle of the house), which is understandable, so I proposed to him that I'd go to roof cavity instead, to help him pull the cable and he was OK.
At the end, took a bit longer, but his work was reasonably neat too, certainly no excessive drilling, so quite happy with the result.

      • Curious why they rejected the NTD being situated in your laundry? This is where I was planning to ask to have mine situated..

        • +1

They didn't reject, cause I didn't ask, cause I read the Install guide which specified they will not install in Wet areas like Bathrooms and Laundries.

…nbn equipment cannot be installed in a damp or wet areas such as a kitchen, bathroom, laundry…

This deal isnt applicable to non fttp upgrades… limited and targeted for sure

  • Used this offer with the free FTTN>FTTP upgrade, had a great experience.

Just finished the 6 months and switched to Superloop as I wanted to try out 1000mbit.

    • So, u don’t need to stay for 1 yr after the upgrade? I thought that was the term?

      • Nope! No lock-in contract.

      • Nah, I only stayed 6 months to make the most of the cheap 100mbit price.

        • OK, I just thought some ppl mentioning (in the older thread) that we have to stay for a year for upgrading but wondering how they enforce it, cause as u said, there was no lock-in contract. My 6 months expiring soon, thinking to move it to More as I have the CBA offer

          • @hanofee: My 6 months has just expired - I've raised a support request with them asking what they'll do to keep my business. I've been on the 1000mbit speed since the upgrade, but it's definitely not worth full-price!

  • +3

Negging to highlight that doing anything but transferring a 100% stable connection to the technical support void that is Tangerine/More Internet is a disaster waiting to happen.
If you have no troubles, then great price. If however you do have trouble, they have a proven and ongoing history of doing sweet FA to assist.

This is doubly the case when you can to upgrade to Fibre with Leaptel at $65/month for 12 months, versus this deal for 6 months @$44 + 6 months at $85, across the 12 month contracted period you pay the same and yet take on far higher risk with Tangerine.

    • I'm not seeing any locked-in contract options, seems you can move away whenever needed if the support becomes a problem. Have i missed something?

      • The fibre upgrade deal is supposed to include a 12 month to ensure you pay for the faster speed the upgrade allows.
Maybe Tangerine are not enforcing this (as others are not, anecdotally), but it's supposed to be there.

        • That 12 month requirement is more broadly with the NBN, you can switch to another provider and it counts. I checked that when I signed up as soon as it was available in my area.

    • +1

      Leaptel 100/20 is no longer $64.95. It's $74.95

  • The price is as shown moving from FTTN to FTTP for me.

  • 64.90 for me :(

how do i get it to be 44.90?
I have never been with this company.

New customers get an extra $5/mth off select high speed plans for 6 months. Offer ends 29/02/24

    • Connected earlier at 44.90, Seems to be working for people upgrading to a fibre connection?

      • I think that $40 off is for upgrade discount, not normal connection

        • ok, i just searched another provider and fttp isn't available for me, just fttn. :(
is this just for regional areas? im in sydney and fttp isn't available? so strange.

  • From my experience currently on Tangerine 6-month deal, I would say that More is much better that Tangerine even if they are sister companies.

    • Why do you say that? I.e. is it service-related or speed/quality?

      • +1

The transition was a nightmare and customer service was nice but not helpful at all. It’s cheaper than More though, you get what you pay for.

        • So you went from More with no issues to Tangerine with issues and somehow More's technical support (that you never experienced) is better than Tangerine's which you did.
Noting that the technical support team are the exact same group of people no matter which letterhead you're paying the bills to.
          It's just the dumbest argument!
They're both crap, you just didn't have to deal with the crapness until you had a problem.

  • Signed up with this one yesterday, unfortunately I think it is only an upgrade and can detect what type of connection you have (ie. if you already have FTTP then the discounted price won't show up like me)

Paid 64.90 and it took a few hours to connect

    • Was there an option to connect with a future date?

      • Yes there was (it tells you to leave the date blank if you want it connected ASAP)

  • +1

Ok upgraded from FTTN with Tangerine to FTTP deal got the duscount deal for 6 months but so far each invoice has been the wrong amount and had to do a ticket to change it back to the promo price i have screen shots of the plans and can prove 6 month discount will also change out after 6 months

    • Contact their live chat, they're quite good. I had double billing when upgraded (as I paid for 1 month FTTN price first back then, then upgraded a few days later). They ended up offering me full refund of the FTTN part, so I kinda get a few days free.

  • Looks like for FTTP upgrade only? I have never used tangerine and cannot see the 44.90 pricing.

  • +1

Anyone know if there's plans for a HFC upgrade to FTTP on the horizon?

    • nope… the country is broke

      • +2

It’s not broke, the sea level rose 12,000 years ago resulting in Tasmania being detached but the continent is still in tact.

  • +1

You guys have to upgrade to FTTP for the discount to be applied for those who said it doesn't show the discount

    • You guys have to upgrade

      Deal is for gals too…

I signed up to this offer in November/December, I got FTTN connected first and then FTTP. Sign up was $44.90, 2 days later I got a bill for $15 for the FTTN connection, a week later I got FTTP installed and then at the end of the month, they tried to charge me $130~! I had to open up multiple tickets in there portal system to get it adjusted back to the original $44.90 cost. Billing experience hasn't been great but I haven't had any issues with internet connection, pings are great on gaming, speeds consistent.

  • Don't forget to use random referral if ur new. It should stack with the upgrade offer

  • 10 negative votes . Poor customer services and you will waste a lot of time to solve your problem.

  • Tangerine has one of the worst customer service in the industry, I switched out after a few months. They even tried to entice me with a $10 bill credit to post a fake google review for them lol.

  • +1

Buyer beware regrinding Tangerine. Copied from the last deal from them about my experience:

Had tangerine for 6 months on their Fixed Wireless plan. Not sure what they did but it was initially configured incorrectly, we theoretically should have been on the full 75mbs plan. but they left another UNID open from the previous internet provider so we we're only able to get 50mbs max speeds. Which meant in reality (because it still Fixed Wireless) our speeds were woeful.

Moved to Exetell and the speed jumped up, still as bad a Fixed Wireless, but more tolerable.

  • It pisses me right off that I don't have access to this deal even though I have been with Tangerine for a couple of years.
Why do existing customers never get better deals? (rethorical question, no need to respond)

    • I'm assuming that existing customers do have access..(similar offers are available for existing customers of other ISP Fibre Upgrade deals)
They just need to be eligible for the NBN Fibre Upgrade program.

      • Correct. I am an existing Tangerine customer on FTTN, and was able to sign up to this FTTP upgrade deal.

    • Have you tried? I was already existing customer for 6 months when I took similar offer back in September (or so). Can even applied Bupa code back then (which was for new customer)

      • Yeah I did.
        They offered nothing

  • They first need to have their board meeting and decide whom to call existing customers. Joined back in may'22 and left within a month but I'm still their existing customer.

Couldn't take on 2 months free sim plan offer and had been charged a full amount.

Had a lot of issues with their nbn too, so left in anout 20 days.

    YMMV

  • I have fttc on the 50 mbps speed at my home and is very adequate. Is it really worth upgrading to fttp?
I feel like I should, out of fomo because I doubt the free upgrade will last forever. However, I really like the fact that the fttc nbn modem is so small and portable. I can put it in any room and connect the cable straight to the pc since each room has a home phone socket.
I have no idea where the fttp installation will go inside and how I would connect it to my pc without having a 10 metre messy cable looping to my room. (My pc does not have wifi)
Anyone have sugestions and past experiences?

    • I probably would stick with FTTC if I were you. FTTC can support up to 250mb in theory.

  • 350mbit peak speeds lol

  • I am now eligible for FTTP …. I looked for the 1000mb plan, but can only find a 350 mb plan ?

is this advertised as up-to-1000 ?

    • Yes the 350 plan is the 1000 plan. Tangerine performance seems to vary based on where you live (i.e. which POI you're connected to). Personally, I think you are probably best to sign up to Leaptel if you're considering going with the 1000 plan, as the cost is only $5 more/month with this plan level (and support is likely to be better).

      • noz thanks for your reply - does Leaptel have 12months mandatory after the fTTP upgrade ?

  • For anyone that has signed up to this, wondering what installation date you have received. I know three people who have signed up that have gotten dates of the 1st (Feb and March). Unsure if it's coincidence or Tangerine are trying to get people signed up on the 1st to match billing or something, rather than getting the true first available NBN date?

  • I signed up for a similar deal back in December - $84.90/month with $40 off for the first 6 months, and a free FTTP upgrade. Paid the first month in advance and everything connection wise went smoothly.

Then my bill for the first month was $109. They're now telling me that my plan has changed because I switched to FTTP and that my upfront payment was actually a connection fee. They're going to give me $20 credit toward my next bill, and I'm still out $89.

On top of all that, their "Self Care Portal" gives me an ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE error - at first just on my laptop, now on all of my devices, so I can't even download my bills to see what shady business they're up to.

So unless you really love dealing with the TIO, I'd give this one a miss.

    • Are you certain you signed up for the Fresh Fibre deal? If so, $0 connection is indisputable. You would have gotten an order confirmation stating the pricing and that you're on the Fresh Fibre promo, and the T&Cs explicitly state that the upgrade is $0. I know their customer service isn't very good, but this one isn't one that they would be sticking to their guns with, something doesn't make sense.

  • Hi guys, I just been connected to Tangerine today and my original order is 100/20, but looks like they set me up with 50/20 with FTTN whilst awaiting for FTTP upgrade. Is it the normal process ?

  • I got connected to FTTN 50/20 though I chose 100/20 to upgrade to FTTP. The email order confirmation from them said that whilst awaiting for FTTP connection, I will be connected to Value Plus which is 50/20. It is a misleading advertising. Then my bill is added with $15.01 and they said because it is still FTTN. Once becomes FTTP, it will be back to $44.90. It is contrary with the contract that they provided. My understanding is that the bill will be $44.90/ month until upgraded to FTTP or first 6 month connection, whichever earlier. But their billing system is thinking charge $60 now until fttp is connected. I am confused. Anyone on the same boat ?

  • The deal is finished. I am eligible for the upgrade. price show $64.90 for 100/20 and 79.90 for 250/25. I already clicked select plan.

  • Since December I have signed up to the $64.90 per month, NBN FTTP upgrade, Super Speeding 250mbps.
They transition from FTTC to FTTP was seamless. I am now clocking 270mbps.

The only issue was once the old FTTC NTD box goes in the bin, the NBN contractor/installer for the new FTTP NTD box only wanted to install the box back to back to the external utility box. That means my modem has to be in the same room as the NTD. They were too lazy or incompetent to run the fibre to my previously FTTC NTD box location (in living room). Lucky I have CAT6 wired in every room, so I just hooked up CAT 6 from the new NTD box to my living room and kept the modem in the living room.

  • Great deal - only suggestion to edit would be that the SuperSpeedy FTTP (Upgrade Offer) lists the DL speed as: 200Mbps Download, not 250.

  • Wondering if anyone else has signed up to this and has been incorrectly billed? (e.g. getting $15 discount/month instead of $40, as well as other issues).

    • Yep, as long as you still with fttn, they will charge you the fttn. I was charged $59.90 for first 2 months then this month $69.90. I asked them, they said until I changed to fttp, that is the price. Haven't got the chance to argue yet

      • Were you already a Tangerine customer on FTTN, or did you come from another provider and go on to interim FTTN as part of the FTTP sign up process?

        • Was with another provider

          • @yht: Complete BS on Tangerine's part. There's nothing in the sign up process that suggested you wouldn't be getting the $40 discount while you waited for FTTP.
