Sony 32GB Tablet S - $388 from Harvey Norman

70

Been looking around for a 10" tablet for the kids. Found this Sony Tablet S on HN online. Seems like a good price even though is a bit dated and only 9.4". All reviews seem good but like I said are from almost a year ago. Running on a 1.0GHZ Dual Core NVIDIA Tegra 2 Processor. Seems good enough for what I want it for (playing videos/media files) but I feel I still need to get the approval of the Ozbargain community before I can say if its a bargain.

JB's have it for $458.
Seems to be the cheapest "in stock" on Staticice.

Edit: Postage around $6 to my area, or free pickup from store.

Here's some specs and a review if anyone wants to know more.

  • Probably one of the most underrated tablets on the market. My wife and I have one each. I both upgraded to ICS 4.03.
The full SD card slot is fantastic.

    • Full size SD slot
Every 10" tablet should have this standard

I was going to suggest a Transformer Tf300, but can't find it near this price. Not a bad deal

      • How about Lenovo tab, in saying that i am bored of mine now.

    • I am very happy with my thinkpad tablet, same SD, also normal USB, 3G, $230 after cash back. Bought about one month ago. So, for a dual core tablet, I am not interested in any other deals now.

Just waiting for price drop of Nexus 7, or Nexus 10 maybe.

    • if only they made a wireless charging station, this could have been a good tablet to have on coffee tables

  • The Asus tf300 can be had for around the $400 mark.

    wins hands down IMO

Seems like pretty poor value compared to the Asus TF101 deals for $248. Same processor and RAM but TF101 has 10.1" IPS screen. This has 32GB as opposed to 16GB but microSD cards are cheap as chips.

  • Not crazy about the sloped back

    • This was actually one of the draw cards for me… Great for typing on a surface in landscape but even better for holding in portrait when reading. I have used most of the others out there and whilst this isn't perfect it was best for me.

      • I was thinking that if you wanted a sloped back on eg. iPad, then you can get numerous kinds of covers to do the same thing.

There are other advantages to the sloped back such as fitting more battery or adding more available port types.

Also, I want to point out that the screen size is smaller on the Sony, which increases the pixel density for the same resolution.

definately a great tablet of its time, having the highest set of features like universal remote, DLNA, Playstation certified, USB port, light weight etc. Had one and would highly recommend it.

go for it but make sure your wireless router's default ip address is 192.168.1.XX to avoid hell lot of trouble connecting it to your wifi. i bought one previously and did lot of research to get it working with my belkin router, and when i say lot it was a hell lot. didn't find any solution anwhere. eventually found out myself that it was the ip address issue. changed my router to dlink and no longer had any issue.

other thing to note is all android apps, which run in potrait mode, will run in opposite direction to tablet's holding position, which is bit frustrating.

  • My friend bought this in July @ mobileciti for $349 but must have been grey import. Functions well but screen is a bit dull for Sony.

  • Hi,
Got one of these a few months back. Not a tablet expert but really happy with it.
Just one thing to be aware of………….it doesn't come with the micro usb cable required……..it does however fit a sony mobile wire or interestingly enough a kindle one!!!
