Advice Needed on Which Reconditioned Laptop to Buy Please

I’m sure there are lots of other options, but I’m trying to decide between:

Lenovo Thinkpad T460S, i5, $300

Toshiba X30E i5 8th generation, $400

and

Microsoft Surface Laptop 2, i5 at 2.66Ghz, $500

Memory and SSD are 8GB and 256GB for each.

Should’ve said, for email, browsing, not much else.

I haven’t been checking out computers for many years, and have absolutely no idea whether the price difference between the three is worth it. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I’ve bought from them before, and the service is great, so I’m going to stick with them. I have a discount voucher which brings the prices down a little.

X30E would be my pick of those. It is 8th gen which means Windows 11 support. It also may be upgradable. I'd avoid the T460S as Windows 10 won't be supported after October 2025.

You would likely find a better deal on a refurb posted here. I would be looking for 8th gen+ for a laptop. For example, I paid about $310 for a t480 and $350 for an 8th gen Lenovo x1.

        • Thanks. I was sort of hurrying to use the discount code before it dies, but your linked one is definitely better. I’m going to keep checking for deals here for a while.

I've noted that on the store you linked, the display resolution on these machines aren't listed,

you might want to ask the sellers what the exact spec is so you don't end up buying a laptop with a 1366 * 768 display.

        • Thank you. I hadn’t considered display resolution.

  • Even if you're just doing email and browsing, I'd go for 16GB in this day and age.

    • Thanks for that, I’m thinking again.

    • why?

      • Mainly because it looks as if there are better deals around, and the replies here have given me more to think about. 😀

      • Because the RAM usage of web browsers keeps increasing. In 2024, you start hitting 8GB when you have a lot of tabs open. This will only get worse moving forward.

Given that a lot of laptops have soldered RAM, come 2026, you might have issues upgrading it, and might be more limited in how you use the machine.
