Harvey Norman, JB, DSE really need to thank Apple without letting them know and drop the price.

I am wondering whether they are really refurbished or they just want to clear out old stock.

  • +8

Add our 10% GST on the US price and it becomes $417, hardly a deal breaker.

    Refurbished iPad with Wi-Fi 16GB - Black (3rd generation)

    A new one is only $79 more so… hmmmm….

    • +2

And you get a few extra bits with the 4th gen, mainly the faster processor and LTE if you get the 4g compatible model.

    • +1

      Also, resale value.

Doubt many people would want something with an outdated connector 1+ years down the track.

  • +3

i purchased 2 x ipad2 refurbs 12 months ago. you cannot fault them whatsoever. no marks, no blemishes, no hint that someone had touched them beforehand. for the sake of the 'dirty word refurb' they are an identical product. if anything they might be better, as theyve been tested before shipped.

    • +3

that's because Apple change both the battery and outer shell on their refurbs.

      • +2

yeah realise that. simply confirming that the refurbs are a very good product, not a refurb in the normal sense.

  • +2

Only bought my 32GB in June for $627..pretty pissed off how quickly they've released a update and depreciated the price of the 3rd gen

    • +3

Strictly speaking, apple is no longer selling the 3rd gen, although you can still get it via resellers etc.

Its just the way of the game, the ipad update put everyone on the heels as noone was expecting them to update the ipad till next year.

  • can you ship these directly to AUS?

    TIA

    • +1

      They are A$ au store.

  • +2

Where is the bargain? Apple is always selling refurbished items below cost. And if you feel ripped off by the USA price just need to factor GST and international shipping cost, and now its cheaper to buy locally.

    • +3

The bargain is the fact that these refurbished ipad3's are most likely brand new stock from a discontinued line. And at this price point it makes the new ipad3 10 dollars cheaper than a new ipad 2 (which is still in production).

  • +1

As these are most likely brand new. Is it worth saving the $100 over the new ipad, as all I can really see is the new connector. And apparantly a speed increase.

    • Some people may say YES, so depends.

    • +1

Faster processor (significantly faster, early reports say it can run uncompressed 1080 video, which is pretty good) lightning connector and 4g LTE.

  • +1

"Too bad Australia pays more than the US (i.e. AUD $419 vs USD $379)"

Don't forget that US prices do not include tax (and it varies depending on which US state you buy it from), but Australian prices include GST. So the pricing is very much similar in this case.

  • Does anyone have experience how long the shipping is?
    thanks

    • bought ipod from them in the past…seem very quick ~3 business days to SA
but not sure about ipad though

  • +1

ahhh. hope they got enough stock to last a week and half…….. need TRS refund……

    • Exactly in the same boat as you!

  • -6

where is the bargain - 2nd hand stock at their full rrp?

    • Its ~100 bucks off their RRP, but this is a discontinued line, so really you are comparing a A5X vs A6X, 30pin plug vs lightening bolt for a 100 bucks difference.

    • It is not second hand. Apple put them in refurbs section to avoid people get confuse with the 4th gen iPad. It looks the same outside just minor upgrade inside such as A5x to A6x cpu and LTE system.

      • +2

        refurb is second hand!

  • +1

Pretty average price: since the new new iPad is being released soon, the old new iPad should drop in price a bit… absolutely not worth it to buy a refurbished model now, for this price.

    • +1

The theory is that these are actually new ipads, because its "discontinued" they can't sell in on Apple proper, hence they shift it to the clearance section. Otherwise its just a bit too much of a coincidence that the day iPad 4 is released, the entire range of iPad 3 is available on the refurb site. Besides even if its a refurb, Apple refurbs are like new with the full warranty.

      • I can't see how that would be a problem, though. Seeing as though the iPad 2 is still on the main site, they don't have a problem with non-current models. They could have just listed the old new iPad as "New iPad (Early 2012)" and the new new iPad as "New iPad (Late 2012)". Besides, would they really want to / be allowed to list brand new devices as refurbished?
Unless they want to sweep this whole half-cycle revision thing under the rug.

        • +1

From what I've seen in the past Apple only really sells 2 versions of 1 model at the same time anyway(a current, and an older version). And considering Apple's line up now of the Ipad mini, Ipad 2, Ipad with Lightning dock, it makes a lot more sense as it gives a more equal spectrum of choice regarding both pricing and specs (as opposed to Ipad mini, New Ipad, Ipad with lightning dock).

  • +2

    Some people just like whinging.

    Bought one here. Good price.

    • Btw, reason I say good price;
Been waiting on the announcement of iPad mini to see the impact on prices etc.

An iPad 2 from Apple/JB etc is about $429, and I was close to buying that. Missed the free shipping option at Kogan a few weeks ago, which would've been $389 delivered (my sister got it), but my hesitation then means that now I get the retina model for $10 less than I was going to pay for the iPad 2 anyway.

  • -1

Refurbished.. so you mean it's not a new new iPad but an old/second hand new iPad?

    • +1

read from beginning you will know what is refurbished.

      • +2

I knew that. I meant it as a joke about Apple's nomenclature. If you buy a used 'new iPad', can you still call it a 'new iPad'?

        • they will still be new 10 years from now, even when you want to resell it in gumtree :D

  • It's new stock, they just call it refurbished so that recent ipad3 buyers don't rage at the lowered price.

  • -1

Must be new stock, why would apple sell refurbs themselves?

    • apple stores website ALWAYS have section to sell refubs, mac, iphone, ipad, etc.

  • guys, if anyone buy this please let me know what ios it has? (hint: jailbreak)

    • -1

      Why jailbreak an Ipad/ipod/iphone.
Apps are so cheap, it's not worth the risk of bricking the product.

      • +1

        yes please, dont jailbreak.
:) this way apple will not too worry about us jailbrokers hehe

      • +2

Is it even possible to brick them? And I have a jailbroken ipod touch with not a single pirated app. There's more to jailbreaking than apps you know.

        • +1

There is methods around fixing a 'bricked' apple product, le google gives you the means now.

  • +1

I'll let you know when it arrives. I'm expecting ios6 though.

    • +1

we cant pick up at store, can we? d*mn… what use of ipad without jailbreak…

      • +2

Been using iOS devices for 3 years without jailbreaking. Works fine for me.

Hi, has anyone received their iPad yet? Are they in white box or original retail box with plastic wrap unopened please.

    • +1

someone on whirlpool said original box. im waiting for confirmation of ios. but maybe will place order today, well, i can always return it in 2weeks if ios is 6

      • +2

confirmed, original box with ipad photo on it not just plain white box. but at the back of the box, there is a word "apple certified refub" printed. inside, no different from brand new ipad.
        ios… IOS 5.1.1 ! wohooo

also if someone worry, i called apple and they told me we still can return this "refub", shipping back also free, within 2 weeks, no question asked.

        • +1

Got mine and it's definitely the plain white box with "Apple certified refurbished" on it, so I'm assuming that means it is actually a refurb. I'm a little disappointed, if only for the fact that I was kinda hoping for a genuine new one, but if someone had taken this "refurb" out of the box and given it to me out of the blue, I honestly wouldn't have been able to tell if it was new or not.

Are there any 100% ways I can tell either way that it is or isn't? It did come with 5.1.1. If there weren't any refurb iPad 3's on the Apple store prior to the iPad 4 launch, then that'd be all I need to know I think.

Now to jailbreak the sucker :D

        • yeah sorry got wrong details from whirpool fella. i got mine too and white plain box.
i got mine jailbroken in 10mins after it arrived. :D
usually app store only have limited quantity and models on its refub section.
but 1 day after ipad 4 announced we saw all models/colours (6 of them) ! maybe they re-box the new one with plain box.

        • Mine's definitely a refurb, because (contrary to their webpage) mine clearly hasn't been given a new outer shell. There's not a lot of wear on the back of mine, but considering it could only be (at the most) three months old, it's been fairly heavily used. I mean… if they haven't replaced the shell like they say on the refurb page, have they replaced anything else like they say?

Bit dodgy :/ Opening a case with them now, just waiting for their online thingy.

PS. It took me less than 10 mins for me to jailbreak this one ;)

Edit: Service call was painless, they're sending a new (wait.. refurb!) one down straight away and picking up this one on Thursday. Can't ask for much more than that.

        • send it back. are yours 16gb? then good timing to upgrade it to 32gb. i got 32gb and now have only 1gb left !

        • I received mine as well, got the same packaging. I am convinced that mine is brand new.

Maybe it is not a bad idea to refund it, and then get a 16GB "new" ipad in Big W for $80 more.

        • No need to upgrade to 32, my plan is to have the iPad for apps only and my phone (probably Nexus 4) for music.

Not super keen on getting a 4 for a bit extra, this is really only for me to use my existing apps on when I ditch my 4S, as well as ebooks and stuff. That, and all my current (old) connector stuff would be useless ;)

        • thats exactly why you need bigger than 16gb.. APPS (and games)! just check fifa, nba, avengers, tintin, need for speed,.. all over 1GB each
or you meant just apps no games?

        • Handful of apps, handful of games… I'm trying to change my gaming habits so that I only ever have a few on there at a time that I'm actively playing rather than a billion of them (like on my 4S) that I never play. That's the theory, anyway ;)

  • Is it a good time to go for a ipad 3? omg

    • Get an ipad 3S before travell overseas within a month, I would say. Then claim gst back.

  • +1

    ordered one - TRS here i come…

    • An update for my order.

The location of the package changed from Shenzhen to Hong Kong last night.
It MUST be new and not preowned/refurbished. As foxconn factory (the OEM manufacturer or ipad) is in Shenzhen.

      • actually, an apple genius told me, when someone returned an iphone/ipad for any reason, they will ship back the item to factory in china, it will get repacked, changed battery, screen, etc, tested.

so,this might be real refub - still, good value.
