Volvo’s 48 hour test drive is offered by Volvo Retailers and is subject to availability and model availability varies by Retailer. Conditions apply and for approved applicants only.

I assume they’ll only want to offer this to basically ‘sure thing’ type customers ?

    • +3

I approve. Now off to my nearest Volvo dealership.

    • -2

      Requires cedit checks.

      • Even if you have your own in house finance?

      • +2

Is this a joke? or are you seriuous?

      • No it doesn't.

    • +79

That's why you use the secret phrase:
"What advantages does this motorcar have over, say, a train? Which I could also afford."

  • -3

Wow this is exactly what my family is looking for, seriously. Any catch? I'm wondering on the KMs and insurance excess.

    • +7

100kms/day and $5000 excess might be a benchmark.

      • that's a bit of a dealbreaker for a longer test drive, it wouldn't get covered under your usual rental excess reduction insurance that comes with credit cards. Honda does no excess not aware of any other

    • +17

Exploiting a car dealership for a dubious free weekend hire is 'exactly what your family is looking for?'

        • -3

          So true

        • +4

Haha, what? What exactly do you think 'SJW' means? Or do you just reflexively spit out 'SJW' or 'woke' to everyone who upsets you?

      • -7

If they're on your right, then yes. They have right of way.

        • -7

Yes, please let Tesla drivers know about it.

        • +3

Seriously? You should revisit the road rules.

        • +4

If they're on your right, then yes. They have right of way.

This is the actual rule, FYI:

The most important thing to remember is when you’re entering a roundabout, you must give way to any vehicle already in the roundabout and any tram that is entering or approaching the roundabout.

      • But I also need Abba music to miss all them faces from people who were caught once in their life behind this brand.

    • You can wear a musky t-shirt.

      • Since Volvo is now 100% Chinese owned I would not expect any other after warranty support above other competing Chinese brands.

    Ovlov

  • +1

lol…love it…literally taking your local dealership for a ride!

    • +15

      I wouldn't say literally.

        • +1

          Careful, your neurosis is showing.

  • +6

    At last, another Uber competitor

  • +28

Depends how much you value 2 hours at the dealership bluffing your way to this.

    • +11

Yeah a hard pass, what a waste of time.

  • +1

'What advantages does this Volvo have over, say, a train, which I can also afford'

  • +1

Be good for at road trip

  • +1

Seems desperate. Throw in a poster of the Swedish Bikini Team and you got a deal.

  • Of the Western cars, Volvo would be the most practical/reliable. I liked V60 the most & now have V50 for the young - excellent for beating the rental increases (fits double Mattress, roof racks & enough power to tow).

    • +12

Volvo is owned by China so would that make em eastern?

      https://www.volvocarswaterloo.com/who-owns-volvo/

      • kind of? theyre owned by the chinese but design / engineering / build still happens in sweden, with some happening in asia, the US and of course china.

id consider them a global brand, really

      • +1

You won't call Mercedes a Chinese company because BAIC is the biggest shareholder of Diamler?

        • +3

From Google: Mercedes-Benz is owned by Daimler AG, a German auto group

The Chinese BAIC Group currently holds 9.98 % of the company's voting rights, making it Mercedes-Benz Group AG's largest individual shareholder.

          From Volvo Waterloo website
Volvo is currently owned by the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group,

So no I would not call Mercedes a Chinese company according to the above info. Volvo on the other hand I would.

Nothing wrong with that as I'm looking forward to Zeekr coming to Aus.

          • -4

@aka nioh: That is exactly what I said. BAIC is the biggest shareholder of Daimler and Geely is the biggest shareholder of Volvo.

            • @hiaaron: 🤔not sure the point your making. You asked me a question and I answered it based on info I found of google.

    • -1

I liked when did Ford owned Volvo and they shared models; you could get basically a Volvo for a good chunk less.

      • They shared platforms just like Lexus & Toyota do today and many others, it does not mean you were buying a Volvo.

  • -1

"Go for a drive in the Volvo, have a crash its perfectly safe!"

    • +1

Not anymore apparently. Since Geely's ownership, they have lost their edge on safety.

  • +3

Not sure what's up with Volvo but it seems like they're desperate to sell cars. As opposed to Toyota / Lexus who are turning people away.

    • -5

Because nobody is interested in buying Volvos.

      • +3

        Not true !

        • -2

Very true, they are selling Chinese cars at a premium price.

          • +1

            @T-man: Like Apple

          • +1

@T-man: Except they aren't Chinese made cars, they are mostly Swedish

For most global markets, Volvo cars are produced and assembled in Sweden - XC60, XC90, V90 Cross Country
            There's also Belgium - XC40, V60 Cross Country, C40
The plant in South Carolina currently produces the Volvo S60
The plant in Chengdu, China, is responsible for Asian market vehicles.

            • +4

@spaceflight: My XC40 made in China.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: I've been caught out supplying filters to certain brands that were made in China, and thus have a slightly different cartridge filter.

        • Not true !

OK, my 90yo neighbour might be interested…

  • +9

This should be for people for genuinely looking for a car in the market not for free riders.

    • +2

not sure how it qualifies as a bargain tbh … but I guess mods believe it is

  • +1

Perfect for uberEats, hopefully no km limit?

  • +1

What a difference a couple of years makes. Back in 2022 they probably did not have any demo cars available and there would have been a wait list of buyers willing to buy without a test drive.

  • +4

what's the difference between this and say if I posted a deal about getting free samples at the ice cream shop, lol

    • +3

      You should.

    • +4

      Where’s this free ice cream?

    • +3

      1) no other car dealers offer this
      2) the value of renting a brand-new Volvo SUV through car hire would be about $600 for the 48 hours
      3) it can genuinely make a big difference for someone with back or neck pain, a 10 minute test drive doesn't tell them enough about the long term comfort of the car

    • The free icecream was 2 weeks ago.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/825938

  • +12

Two days alone with car is an unusually good test-drive compared to 20 minutes with pushy salesman.

So if your ice-cream shop starts giving five full-size cones as free samples, then yes, post it here.

    • I don't think I've ever had the salesman come along when test driving new cars and even for used cars most of the time they haven't come.

      • +2

Same here. Took a Kia for a spin last year and dealer handed me the keys and said, tanks full - take your time. Would have had for close to 2 hours testing it out on highway, busy streets, parking and playing with the features. He didn't bat an eye lid when I came back.

  • +1

WA not doing 48 hour test drives. Just tried to book.

    • +1

      Time to migrate

    • +1

Maybe they knew you werent serious about buying a car so told you they werent doing it.

    • Probably qualified you and realised you were a timewaster.

  • +1

Since owned by Geely, means it has lost its reliability? Then why still buy Volvo? Other than its ugly design?

  • -1

Can i take it to the track?

    • +1

Train track? Sure, if you're in SA you could take it on the o bahn (a track for buses)
      .

  • +1

Not sure this really counts as much of a bargain - even if you misuse it for a free car for 2 days it wouldn't be worth the time and headache of them "maybe" approving you.

That said if you were in the market for a new car, a 2 day test drive is a great offering! The usual 15 minutes a couple times around the block isn't quite enough to get a real feel for a new car!

  • -2

Committing fraud is now a bargain?

  • +1

I suggest considering the Tesla Model Y, the best-sold car in 2023. I am very happy with my Tesla.

    • The XC40 recharge looks lovely.

    • +4

I'd be concerned about the constant price drops, every quarter or so it drops in price and you know you've over paid.

    • any downsides? does the glassd roof let in too much heat?

  • +1

Volvo and their subscription services nonsense for google which is infused in the car though… I was interested until I had a chat to the salesman about that.

  • +2

anyone actually done this? How was the process?

  • +3

Appears to be marketing gimmick? Apparently Cars for 48 hours are booked out until March but you can visit dealership and have a test ride.

  • Doncaster dealership advise that "one has to find a car to buy and pay the deposit"before the 48 hour test drive. This is confusing.

    • That's what dealers do, they try to trap you
