60 to 90 days to refund for cancelled flights. Is that too long to wait for my money?

Hi, hoping someone can comment on my situation. I booked flights through Expedia.com.au. The tickets were issued by Air Canada. Air Canada cancelled one of the flights so I told Expedia the alternative flight offered didn't suit. Expedia subsequently advised that Air Canada had authorised a full refund but that it would take 60-90 days for Air Canada to credit the money to my AMEX. I was told to contact Expedia after 90 days if the money had not been credited.

Is this standard practice by Airlines? I am down $8000 and I had to redraw off my mortgage to rebook alternative flights. Should I talk to Amex to see if they can recover the money faster?

Thanks if anyone has any advice or information.

Yes, I would definitely talk to AMEX. They should have some sort of customer protection, afterall, you did paid for something and you didn't receive any goods/services! Also some AMEX may include free travel insurance. Just ask them, nothing to lose!
I would also contact Air Canada as well, just to confirm their refund policy and timeline. Do they pay you directly or do they pay Expedia and Expedia pay you? Just to make sure Expedia is not dicking u around.
$8000 is a lot of money… good luck.

  • I've just had a lot of fun with Expedia. Wanted a room for 3, 2 adults and 1 child and had this stated in the search along with age of child. Price looked good and booked, but the confirmation email had in small print that the price was for 2 adults only even though it also listed the 3 people. Rang up to sort it out and they confirmed that price quoted was only for 2 people and an extra person was $15 extra. This made the price more expensive than Wotif for a family room at the same place for 4 people! Yet they wouldn't do anything, so I cancelled. But still couldn't get cancellation confirmed. Ended up contacting motel myself to cancel properly. Would never deal with again. So I wish you luck and I wouldn't be surprised if the problem was with Expedia.

With $8000 flights, you'd be best to deal with a travel agent who has contacts etc, and will want your return business.

  • Jetstar took 15 days to refund money for a flight that they cancelled from Melbourne to Bali
