CodeWeavers CrossOver Free on Oct 31 (OSX/Linux)

260

CodeWeavers are giving away a free licence for CrossOver tomorrow (31 Oct in GMT-5, so probably some time in the afternoon for us). For those who don't know what it is, it lets you run some Windows applications on Linux/OSX. I used to use it for TF2 before it was ported. I'll probably use it this time to run The Ship and Shank from Steam since the OSX version of that is borked.

Here's their compatibility list: http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/

More info about why they're giving it away here:

  • How is this any different to the free and open source wine application layer for Linux?

It's a Wine wrapper. I think they specifically support some applications too.

Most info I can find about crossover on the net seems a sock puppet advertisement created by the company, it's a free licence so doesn't hurt but I wouldn't give these guys a cent

    • will give it a go for free

Just thought I'd clarify from my experience - the crossover guys basically offer paid support for Windows apps via Wine. They are one of the main contributors to the Wine project.
Yes, everyone is free to use Wine and yes the crossover product is based on Wine. Money spent on the crossover products gives you support; the ability to 'vote' on the application or game you'd wish worked properly under wine and a nicer front-end that makes it simpler to install apps.
This is how the company supports development of the Wine project. Work they do gets fed back into Wine and is thus not lost. IMO, these guys are doing a great job. The product they offer might not be for everyone because some people simply like "free" software to be free, without thinking about supporting the developers. It's your choice :)

All the major Linux distros do the very same thing. All the people/companies who need support pay for the service.

  • Worth a go. They say they support Thumbsplus!. Thanks.
