I need a windows pc for a fam member to browse the internets.

Would this be alright for the next 3-5 years?

    • +2

Absolutely. The PC im using now is the $74 one from a month or so ago (6th gen i5) and is perfectly good for the period youve stated, this would also be fine. It's an all right deal, not nearly as good as the $74 one but okay.

edit: actually i see in the last month or so THREE deals for $74 so you might want to wait for a similar price?

Thanks. I've just started browsing the offer, perhaps even this one: https://www.untech.com.au/products/lenovo-thinkcentre-m910s-…

        i5 7th Gen, 7400 3.0GHz
        8 GB, 256 GB
        8 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 (4 front, 4 rear)

Probably would need to add wifi.

I think in my case it's reasonable to go for the cheapest/basic one with Win 11, right?

Edit: I just saw you added the $74 links. Thanks again, defs worth considering.

wifi dongle $5 on ebay so yeah thats no biggy.

Yeah the one you linked is also perfectly fine, it's just whether you want to wait for another 74 dollar bargain or pay the usual price now really. But in terms of a internet PC these absolutely will suffice, particularly with the SSD.

Last one, under $100. If you need one today, otherwise yeh, appears to be plenty popping up.

You would probably want 8th gen and above.

There was quite a large performance to power consumption improvement going into 8th gen.

        • This one is SFF size, not the same as the listing.

One thing to keep in mind, this officially supports windows 11. 7th gen and below does not, which means that they don’t get auto-updates. Might be something you want to consider if it’s a “set up once and forget” type machine. A good middle ground may be the N100 machines that like to pop up for $150 once in a while.

This PC would do what you want.

But you might be able to do better for less if you look around for a bit longer. The obvious thing to watch for in a similar product would be an M.2 NVMe SSD rather than a SATA one. I'd suggest a small PC of this sort with a SATA SSD is struggling to be worth $229.

Yes, this is the right amount of money to spend and the right sort of PC for that need. It has wifi so you don't need to worry about that either.

  • I need a sub $100 mini PC to run as a media server (just transmitting 4k files really, no decoding). Any recommendations?

    • Lenovo m700 for about 100 on ebay

  • +2

    I have one of these.

It has a pcie port for those who want to add 2.5g or 10g ethernet.

  • does this model support vpro?

  • +1

Could this be used as a home server for game hosting? Like a server for Palworld?

    • If the CPU is regular 8500, should work OK with good cooling and more RAM.

  • +2

OP can you confirm whether this is 8500 or 8500T?

  • +1

OP can u pls advise if the RAM can be further expanded to 32GB? And how many slots available? And any 2.5” storage support?

    • +1

2x sodimm size (laptop ram) slots. But you need the op to tell you how is it used currently. 1x16 or 2x8, or maybe you are willing to replace both then it doesn't matter. Remember it's faster to run both slots filled with same size. They need to be the same speed and ideally same capacity size if both slots are used. Not sure if it will run different capacity rams together, general run of thumb is to pair them with exact same modules. (Brand and model).

      Supports 1x 2.5 inch HDD/SSD (sata)
Supports 2x NVme SSD slots (this is what you want to use if you need to upgrade storage, faster and same price as 2.5 inch HDD/SSD)

  • Ordered this morning

with 3 x drive spaces, this makes an awesome mini server. Hopefully it comes with the needed sleds and screws.

    • shoot me a message and I can have a look for your order

      • how is the ram configured? 1x16? or 2x8? what brand and model?

  • +1

    Just received mine

Very heavy, nice meaty copper heatsink
    ram is 2 sticks
    NO 2.5" bracket
    The opt card is DP
    Intel 9560NGW wifi card

Part number for the hd cage is 33.VRDD1.001

    • Mine is the same, have you got any good suppliers for the HDD sled?

      • I think it's too old for anyone to stock. germany ebay has but its looks to be $100.

Prob going to dodgy something up using elastic bands, or zipties

        • Yeah, seems about right. I might try to model something to 3D print.

          • @Aggregate3: If you do please share it on thingiverse or printables, really disappointment it doesn't come with a cage :/

            • @AlmightyGaz: my modelling is… rudimentary at best but happy to share if it works

  • hd cage also needs 47.VRDD1.001

  • How many sata or m.2 headers are there in these? Thinking of building a NAS based off them.

    • 2 x m.2
1 x 2.5" sata plug, but missing drive cage. But it was quite easy to dodgy secure it using cable ties.

      • Thanks. I imagine the wifi card is PCI-E mini slot based? If so i can get one of them mini pcie to 2x Sata port adapters.

        • Check specs to be sure. But I think it's an intel AC 9560 in a 2230 E-key.

It would fit as it is next to the m.2 slots, but it would poke up might stop you using installing a sata drive

          • @kogi: Could Dremel the lid and route the HDDs external. Gonna need extra sata power anyway from external source.
