    I'm right here.

    • +16

      It's beeping, you're good.

      • +19

I have to admit, I missed your bit about it stopping to beep until you put it down.

        10 points to you.

        • +9

Thank you. That means so much.

      • +13

You sure that's not a pedometer?

        • +13

That must be why it keeps beeping within 200m of Catholic churches.

    • +12

      Dud finder not requested

    • +1

Hahaha came here to say this 😂

    • And look no further

    • +1

      Cheap stud?

    • +2

      Thanks, DadGiraffe

    • False positive, not working

    • +1

I got to do this at work once, they didn't even see it coming. I was like "hang on, we need to make sure it's working first" then put it on my chest and it beeped. Best day ever.

  • +4

    Mine must be broken

    • I'm disappointed, I was hoping for a Simpson's or Family Guy joke.

  • +26

Seems to work though, it didn't stop beeping until I put it down.

    Voted for this alone

    • Love you!

  • +27

    Don’t buy this. Near useless.

    • Probably. My cheap stud finder was using disc magnets to find the nail heads in the studs but found it slow going. Easy returns with Amazon if it is terrible.

    • -3

      Maybe you’re not a stud? :)

But in relation to the product itself, If you follow the instructions they work perfectly!

Hold it on the sides between your thumb and index finger only, and make sure you tone it just below the buzz before you put it on the wall.

      • +5

Mate, you're a wild optimist if you think a $15 stud finder will work perfectly.

As the fella below says, buy a Franklin sensor

    • +2

I agree I bought a stanley stud finder and it was useless

I bought his one from Bunnings and it works fantastic

      https://www.bunnings.com.au/franklin-prosensor-t13-professio…

    • Yeah I have the old version of this and it works, but it’s a little dodgy. The power beeper sensor goes non stop. I’d be happy to buy a better one for a bit more.

  • +19

These things suck, don't buy them.

    • +2

Scan but verify. Never trust one indication, look for more!

If using a bad studfinder like this, verify harder (as if you didn't have the stud finder at all), as that is what it will be like once you've drilled your third hole into thin air!

      • +4

Nah, I have the model up from this and it's complete rubbish. Better off using your hands to verify.

        • +2

I’ve got the model up from this and absolutely agree with the previous poster. It’s not ideal but if you use multiple checks it works fine. Pretty reliable really

        • Just give this 'stud-finder' to your favourite FF, maybe she'll find a better use for it!

  • +12

These are terrible.. i bought a magnet one instead… alott more reliable.. this thing kept going off and i put 7 holes in the ceiling .. horrible things… try the magnet ones, they're really good.. stick to nail heads… works everytime. never again will i buy one of these.

    • Link to a magnet one?

      • +5

        https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B000IKK0OI/ref=ppx_yo_d…

i found one of the highest rated magnet stud finder on amazon at the time i bought it a few months back.. thing is super easy to use.. can locate and lineup nail heads with ease everytime.

its a small thing, which is actually good because you can carry it around with you in your belt bag etc. but the magnet is super strong.. its awesome.

can even buy the magnet ones from bunnings now pretty sure..

it finds the nail heads, so you can figure out where the studs are

      • +3

        this looks cool aswell…. https://www.amazon.com.au/Franklin-Sensors-ProSensor-M210/dp…

saving this on my list, and going to try buy this thing next, when it goes on sale hehe

and yhey sell at bunnings.. nice… review score looks good on amazon.. so

        • +5

Can recommend this. Far more accurate and 100% worth the extra money over cheaper finders.

        • +3

Please post a deal when it does go on sale!

        • I’ve got the Franklin 710pro and it’s been great. Very reliable. I paid around $70 two years ago

          • @stratbargain: Yup. Got my 710pro for $62 on Amazon and have had good results

        • +3

Don’t bother waiting for Amazon to get cheaper, just get the Bunnings t13 for $99

          Else https://amzn.asia/d/jkHxDMV

          • @Whodis: That''s what I bought awhile ago and I and a couple of friends have used it to wall mount 3 TV's and countless shelves

            Worth every dollar

          • @Whodis: Yep, I just bought the T13. It cost me $100, but at least now i wont have to be frustrated by inaccurate readings. This thing is spot on.

    • Agree with this. I used to use this and it just randomly beeps. Recently bought the magnet ones to hang a TV and it worked better.

  • works great on the walls, beeps as soon as it finds it.

mine might be defective, as soon as i put it in my pocket it starts beeping like crazy and the battery died from the non stop beeping.

    • +6

Mine stopped beeping when I loaned it to my BIL.

      • +1

        lol

      • Does that make your sibling a dudfinder?

  • +13

Franklin are the only ones that seem to work for me. Stanley are horribly inaccurate

    • +1

      Franklins no frill?

    • +2

Agreed. Not worth cheaping out on these. You end up buying the one that actually works in the end anyway.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/franklin-prosensor-t9-stud-finde…

    • Yep. This one is hot garbage, less of a detector and more of a random function with a beeper attached.

      Get a Franklin, cry once.

  • +7

    Can confirm these are crap

    • you'd have to pay me use one of these things again haha

      • +1

Would paying you out in insults be accepted?

  • +7

Might as well call it a wall detector, will beep for anything

    • It didn't beep for my BIL at all!

  • +1

This doesn't work, tried it a few times and no wood behing when i nailed in where it says.

Went back to the old way, knocking on walls

  • +3

I've got one. Whenever I approach it, it beeps like crazy.

    It works.

    Recommended.

    • Thank you.

  • +3

Got it. It sucks….it literally detects everything as having electricity behind it….including myself.

    • Touch your other hand to the wall while scanning

  • +1

Came for the comments, not disappointed. ahah

  • +4

So far there are more "these are crap" comments than "stud" jokers, but the latter keep fighting.

  • I identify as a cheap stud

  • +3

I had an older model. Next to useless sums it up. My expectation was the newer model would match it. It would find a stud but you had to run it across five or six times. To be fair, when it worked, it picked the edge with a reasonable degree of accuracy. In its place I bought a Ryobi rysf5003 (look on the Ryobi website if you want details - less than RRP at Bunnings and as good a price as I could find but their normal price). The Ryobi is very good at finding the centre of a stud but is a little vague if you need to find a precise edge. It picks them up in walls and beneath a timber floor. If you have cellulose insulation in the ceiling, you need to keep looking.

    • +1

Awesome because I bought the Ryobi. Waiting for delivery.

  • I've got a cheap ozito one which seems to find studs ok. But also tells me there's electricity running through most of them which is annoying… Then again previous owner was a bit DIY crazy so who knows what's actually going on behind the walls… Haven't managed to short anything yet.

  • +2

I have a similar one from stanley , paid a similar price. Confirm these ones are garbage. Bought it for wall mounting a TV, had to drill twice to get it properly in the middle of the wall stud.

  • +2

wouldn't even take it for free

  • +8

Anyone looking for a quality stud finder (for real) the Franklin ones at Bunnings are great. I have the previous model which at the time I think they were like 60-70 bucks, it works flawlessly and I feel the new model has extra light bars to help finer detail the exact width of a timber.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/franklin-prosensor-t13-professio…

    • +4

I have a Franklin sensor one for almost 10 years and recommended it to a bunch of mates. Everyone finds it great. Highly recommended! Probably the best a cheap stud detector (as compared to those $1000+ wall scanners) can get.

      • Great to hear. I've used the Bosch blue scanner, while it's a great unit I find them over complex for simple stud locating.

    • Like many have already said; get a Franklin. I have a 710+. The one posted is garbage

  • +15

I concur with many of the comments above. I bought a Stanley studfinder (although it may have been an earlier model) a few years ago.
Total junk. Replaced it with a Franklin one I bought off Amazon which worked amazingly well. I'm surprised nobody has negged this. Sorry OP but I feel obliged to neg this so that hopefully other people will read the comments and avoid wasting their money.

    • +1

Couldn't agree more. Got one a few years back, useless. It's now in the bin.

  • +2

I learned my lesson a few years ago - I thought $150+ for a stud finder was too expensive… Drilled out holes for replacement wash basin - 2 near perfect centre water pipe holes! $1500 later for pipe repair, re-tiling, etc… not worth cheaping out if doing the work yourself!!

  • -1

I toseed mune out a month ago. They are inaccurate. Buy the ryobi one, which is $50
    .
This is the same quality as ozito power tools.

If you have Purchased one, make use of the return window.

  • +1

I think I’d like my stud finder to detect studs that go a bit deeper than 3/4 of an inch.

  • I bought from bunnings I didn't like it, the broad one is much better but a bit expensive

  • +3

Interesting that this has received 45 up votes. Even if you disregard the negative feedback about its performance it’s not even $5 off RRP.

    • lol you make a good point hahaha… thought this was one of those $50 ones from bunning that i bought that doesnt work haha… didnt bother to check the actual add lol

  • A cheap alternative is to buy off ebay, 1cm squared rare earth magnets to locate the screws holding the drywall boards to the studs. You should be able to find 2 screws one above the other, usually somewhere around half way up the wall (depends on drywall width used). The next lot of screws (for our house) is around 1.5 foot along the wall, at the same height.

  • I have a Stanley stud finder it's great. Same model like this. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/203938741415?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

I paid $10-15. My friend borrowed it, he said his Bosch one is terrible and the Stanley worked perfectly. Mine only does studs

  • +1

I have one of these and it works ok. I would want a better one if i used it daily but for the odd occasion it's ok.

I find the stud then go back over it from left and right. Mark where it lights up on both sides then just aim in the middle of the 2 marks. Worked every time so far.

Probably better off getting the Ryobi for $50 though. https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-stud-finder-with-ac-detect…

  • +3

Those are junk FYI, I returned it straight away and got this https://amzn.asia/d/bIhMEy5 for $25 it’s worked well on a few projects. The visual screen thing lets me actually find the middle of the stud.

  • another model has a button for taser

  • +2

    Absolute garbage. Avoid!

  • Another option is this one from aliexpress. It's a studfinder, metal detector and non contact voltage tester. Works very well compared with our $100+ one at work, costs around $40

  • +3

Bought this last year and it was horrible at actually finding studs or anything else in the wall, so I returned it and spent a bit extra to get one of these https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-stud-finder-with-ac-detect… which ended up working perfectly.

    • +2

Same here. Got the Ryobi which is very good. The Bunnings reviews say it all.

  • +2

I have one. It’s just about as accurate as me knocking on the walls with my hand.

  • +1 for Franklin. Money saved from emergency plumbing and electrician needs is worth the extra cost of the stud finder.

    Negging this sorry.

  • I have one of the same brand but higher model. Has a little LCD that shows the stud.
    It does find ac well.
Finds metal studs somewhat ok but I always doubt it and use magnets as well.

So bit great, as above spend more and get one that works each and every time.

  • -1

Use your phone. Download a stud finder app.

    • Why the down vote? I take it you do know there is such an app?

  • +1

I use a Bosch blue multi scanner and it is great. Well function-wise I think it's a bit overkill. But if you can get it on discount from Amazon like me, great deal.
