I have never grown magic mushrooms because it's illegal, but I have grown shrooms in the past. You need to invest in quite a lot of gear to get started but once you get the hang of it, it's piss easy. It's been a while, but from memory, you need:

A large pressure cooker, preferably that massive one people use for canning
      Wide mouth glass jars
Grains - I used brown rice
Vermiculite and coir - can get from Bunnings
      Syringes
Isopropol alcohol because you need to sterilise everything
      Demineralised water
      Spray bottle
      Plastic tubs
      Spores of legal mushrooms

So you partially cook the rice and put them in the jars. Then you sterilise them in the pressure cooker. Mix some spores in some water, and use a syringe to inject spore mixture into the jars of grains. Leave the jars in a dark place and the mycelium will grow in the jars until the the contents are white. Mix the contents of the jars with coir and vermucilite and chuck the mixture in plastic tubs. Leave the tubs in a room with good sunlight, with the lids slightly open. Spray the soil-like contents of the tubs occasionally so they don't dry out. Wait.

The trickiest part is keeping everything sterile. If you do it right, the mycelium will grow and you're good. If you mess up and the jars are contaminated, you'll get mould and other weird shit growing in the jars and you have to chuck the whole thing out and start again.

I hope this helps. There are better tutorials online.

Wow, I thought this would be a fun post about growing mushrooms.

Anyway, my Asian mushrooms never killed anyone, although this one time my idiot friend ate too much and said, "it felt like I died, and lost my sense of self." He didn't die.

        • It can be a FINE LINE, between a 'good trip' and a 'bad trip' … ;P

Best to have a sleeping pill on hand, for anyone planning to trip on shrooms for the first time. If they start to 'freak out' and think they are going to die (or seem like they might start doing crazy/dangerous stuff), just give them the sleeping pill and they will be 'out like a light' within about 5 minutes.

      • Yo Rosy,

Are you sure that it is illegal to grow shrooms? Has the law changed recently?

Last time I checked (which admittedly was about 20 years ago), I found no law stating that I could not legally cultivate 'psilocybin'-containing shrooms …

    • I too am interested in cultivating for personal use, not commercial gain. Hallucinogens (psilocybin anyway) are apparently legal for the treatment of depression since June 2023, but it has been done in a typical nanny state way. Depressed people cannot purchase Golden Teachers or other psychoactive mushrooms; they cannot purchase psilocybin pills from a pharmacists with a Schedule 4 prescription (that's what you need for an antidepressant like citalopram; antidepressants prescriptions are incredibly easy to get, even from dcotors that have only met you for the first time; it's a pity they are useless placebos). You need to be rich to afford psilocybin treatment, just like you need be be rich to afford ketamine (even though ketamine is a cheap to produce, out of patent drug).

I have download several books on Mushroom cultivation in general and hallucinogenic shrooms, but the difficulty is obtaining the spores, which according to some people are legal (because they contain no psilocybin) and according to others they are illegal (precursors). If I could find someone overseas to send me the spores, Border Farce nazis would destroy on sight at the very least. Perhaps the police would beat me up, arrest me and kidnap me as well. You need a supplier within Australia.

Cultivating and consuming magic mushrooms is a victimless crime. It hurts nobody. People should not be arrested for victimless crimes. That's what totalitarian regimes do.

      • Where can you find the spores?

      • Spore prints are just a piece of paper.

      • I've heard it's easier just to harvest them in the wild, at least in South East Queensland. If you know someone who knows what they're doing, it's very straightforward and one successful gathering expedition will give you the confidence to do it yourself, apparently.

      • Completely agree with you. Also, there are telegram groups where you can buy spores, as well as discord. Dm me.

    • They're illegal mate ahaha

  • +1

I've used one of these before, with limited success. Mine grew fine, but upon harvest and prep, I found they'd dried out internally. Need to really keep them damp, I think I missed misting them on a few days, so definitely need to keep on top of that.

    • I've tried a few different varieties and found its helpful to look up the growing/harvesting tips for the exact species you've got.

  • +1

    What’s the yield like ?

    • +3

Not huge by any stretch. A hundred grams at max for the oyster mushrooms.

      • Yeah that’s not useful .

        • +1

It's enough for an ingredient in one meal. Definitely a novelty thing, I guess it's showing you that growing them isn't necessarily that difficult. That said, I haven't grown any since.

  • +3

are these good for beef Wellingtons?

    • +14

      Personally prefer steamed clams

          What? Is it?

But in the lord of the flies castaway episode Bart asks Martin to draw up plans for a coconut radio, and if possible, a coconut Nintendo…

    https://youtu.be/uy9Z-Tg6ufU

  • Is this actually economical or just a novelty item

    • +8

      Mostly novelty.
These kits tend to claim 2-2.5kg of mushrooms will grow and be edible, which is more expensive than just buying the mushrooms from a supermarket

      • +1

        $12-15/kg?

Thats cheap! Oyster mushrooms go for $40-60/kg!

        • Well, yes, I should have read the whole thing aha

Ok so, take my comment specifically for white button mushroom grow kits.
I’m not sure how many kilos other varieties claim to grow, but if they’re the same amount then it is a bargain.
If the specialty varieties grow in the same price to weight ratio (which admittedly would be unlikely), you’ll get very few mushrooms

    • It's a novelty. You will get mushrooms, but generally speaking they're cheaper to buy in store.

  • +1

Thanks. About to invite my in-laws for dinner and need some mushrooms.

  • +1

    Can this produce unlimited mushrooms?

  • Where can you find lion's Maine? I've heard good things about that mushroom

    • +1

It tastes amazing, almost like chicken. It's a brain boosting nootropic too.

      • +1

How much would you need to consume though in order to get the benefits?

  • im so excited to grow some shrooms, this is going to be trippy

  • +3

I expected to click in for light hearted laughs and ‘I understood that references’ comments… instead.. wow

    • +4

Agreed. But I guess if you have no knowledge of the news story, it does seem a weird way to originally construct the description, seemingly trying to claim Asian mushroom shops are dangerous with no provocation.
So I can see how it could be read uncharitably. Of course, as the reader, you then have the option to take offense, or to consider maybe there is some context being a missed.
I suppose because bigotry has been commonplace, some people will have found choosing the offense path is usually correct, even though I don’t think making that choice was correct this time.

Probably worth an apology to OP for anybody thought they were racist because they didn’t get the joke based on a very big news story.

      • Maybe the smarter thing to do would have been to link the news article for those out of the loop and I mean the way the media made it out… how did anyone miss it.. like I have adblocks and YouTube premium but it was still in my feed of ‘breaking news’ on YouTube home page, it was talked about here etc

        • +7

Nah. Pandering to the lowest common denominator is the fastest way to the bottom…

  • 10 years ago, I bought a mushroom kit after it was discounted by ALDI and followed the instructions. After 30 days - zero mushrooms. I must have gotten a dud.

    • It’s a shame, legend says they are good for constipation

    • Don’t Aldi have a 30 day no question return?

    • If it helps any, I've bought about three and they've all worked.

      • how much did you get off each one?

        • Didn't weigh them, sorry.

I felt like I got my money's worth at the time, but it's probably cheaper (and more convenient) to just buy mushrooms.

    • Yeah have to look at manufactured or pack date old stock has a lower chance of fruiting.

  • I don’t know why people are veering off topic.

Does anyone know if you’ll get $30 worth of mushrooms from these, I’ve never used them before so genuinely interested

How long to they take to grow, can you reuse, how to grow more etc.

    • +1

Have bought from here before, you can read more about them too: https://aussiemushroomsupplies.com.au/

It's fun to do but I think unlikely you will get $30 worth. You can get quite a bit the first flush, but then you get less and less on subsequent flushes. Took a couple of weeks to grow from memory.

  • I used this from Bunnings https://www.bunnings.com.au/richgro-25l-all-purpose-mushroom…
a week later mushrooms popped up everywhere

  • have gotten this before as a gift. maxes out as 4 flushes or so if you look after them well. for most people it wont be economical - more for fun. but for lions mane which isnt sold in normal grocers maybe its worth it

    • Is it because you run out of nutrients? Can you not top them up? Presumably they make a ton of spores so you would never run out of these? I have bought a little hydro tent, should be good to keep it moist and sterile, tempted to give this a go.

  • Some people are such snowflakes thesedays, wow.

  • +1

Obligatory Family Guy reference. Take it away Brian & Stewie.

  • +2

Yet again the White Mushrooms get listed before the Chocolate ones! Please edit.

  • I bought one last time.. It was a load of crap

After reading comments, I'm wondering if any news stories, or discussing news stories, about aspects of weak regulation in china's domestic market, particularly in relation to food is considered racist by some of the more "aware" folks.

I'm not aware of reported instances in countries other than china of things like painting meat, selling non-dairy white liquids as milk etc etc.

I am aware that private buying of some australian supermarket products for shipping to china use to be popular apparently because of chinese food regulation problems…. dunno if it is still a significant thing.

Personally I reckon that there are peculiarities around the world….. I'll try a few….

American feral politics and "the ugly american", asian and mid european financial corruption, african female circumcision, english football violence, italian political instability, israeli compassion, russian civil rights, korean deference/ subservience to elders, japanese importance of "face", chinese fixation on wealth, australian indifference….. etc etc

Am I a supreme racist? Have values changed greatly each decade? Is the world now so cosmopolitan that all nationalities think the same (NO!)

    • +1

People have forgotten what racism really is. There's so many people that cry racism over things that don't even involve a race.

  • +2

Toxic mushroom don’t just have to come from Asian supermarkets. We recently bought shiitake mushrooms from Coles and had no idea they were toxic if not thoroughly cooked. The ones bought from Coles do not say this on the packet at all, which is odd because you can die from these mushrooms. Bleach bottles have a label saying “Do not drink”, so why do toxic mushrooms also not have a label saying, “Do not consume unless thoroughly cooked?”

    • +1

And while they are at it, warnings and ingredients need to be in a font size that more than 20% of the population can read.

    • +1

And do you want the same label on raw chicken too?

      • +1

I think that’s general knowledge. But it’s not general knowledge that shiitake mushrooms must be thoroughly cooked. Many mushrooms you can eat raw - no problem. And these shiitake were cooked. But it turns out not cooked enough. Everyone that has seen what it did to our bodies is horrified. Google image this if you don’t know what it looks like ‘shiitake mushroom dermatitis’. It lasted over two-weeks. Not one person who saw this that we spoke to had ever heard of such a thing. Whereas everyone has head about raw chicken.

    • Show us where you got the information that these can kill you. How many people have actually died from eating them?

        • dermatitis can be nasty but isn't fatal. Provide a link to any reliable article about death from actual store bought shiitake mushrooms - I couldn't find any reference anywhere to such an event if it ever happened at all.

          • @gadget: Dude! Don’t demand I provide you a link. I don’t work for you FFS. You’re interested - you research it - or not. I don’t care. All I did was repeat what my Dr said, so now no one in our family goes near shiitake mushrooms.

            • -3

@Saver Scott: You made the claim. Back it up or shut up. I don't give a rat's either way.

              • @gadget: There you go again, making demands of me. You’re in no position to tell me what to do.

                • @Saver Scott: Lol so easily triggered.

Well I don't know what your doctor told you, but there's nothing from a google search that points to shiitake mushrooms from a store having killed anyone (if you even bothered to read my post).

I'm not telling you to do anything, but if all you can say is you can die from eating it without supplying any reference, well I'll let others judge for themselves how credible your claim is.

    • +1

I once ate 5kg of cadbury chocolate in one sitting and was sick.

Why wasnt there a warning label!!!

  • From what I read, you can take spore prints from grown mushrooms and use more spawn material to grow another batch.

  • Here for the comments.

  • It's easy enough to grow mushrooms in large quantities using off the shelf parts.

  • If you cant grow your own then store bought is fine.

  • -2

"Don't risk buying potentially deadly mushrooms from an outer suburban shop whose name you cannot remember,"

This doesnt happen. So I dont think so.

  • +2

Will these help me enjoy a succulent Chinese meal?

    • Ahhh yes. A meal to be enjoyed after you've practiced your judo!

    • what is the charge?????

  • On the offchance anyone is hanging out for these, the date is incorrect. It should be 13th, AkA Wednesday's specials.

  • Sounds fun what's the yield though
