Too bad it’s so expensive to travel around the US

    • +6

That's why the airfares are cheap - no one can afford a holiday there!

        • +1

Says a guy with a Chinese sounding username

        • +2

Lets not forget covidflation that started this world wide circus

        • Real

    • Are you saying domestic train, bus and airfares in the US are expensive?

      • Compared to Australia, it's quite reasonable.

        • +1

That's what I thought, no idea what this guy is on about

    • +6

Yep, the USA is just out of the question right now with the AUD at 65c + tipping everywhere and it becomes one hell of an expensive holiday.

      • Tipping is optional in the US.

        • +1

Not at most hospitality venues and tours. I've been to many restaurants & on many tours and they automatically add it on, and if they don't add it on, they ask you directly for a tip.
To ask them to remove it or not to pay it would be VERY awkward and rude (as they are paid so little in these industries) and I wouldn't want to return to these venues/tours after doing this.
Last time we were there we ended up eating at McDonalds and other fast food chains far too much, just to avoid this, and we rarely eat fast food.

          • @SimAus007: You could make it a bit less awkward by asking "I'm not from the US - do I have to leave a tip?". You could also add that you're struggling financially and can't afford to leave one, but appreciate the good service. They'll probably sympathise. I found over there that restaurants in hotels (or country clubs) usually included the tip in the bill, while stand alone restaurants didn't.

Doesn't appear to include luggage (besides hand luggage)

    • +1

yeah my sister was going to go to los angeles with fiji airways, only did carry on as it was 200 USD or something to include luggage which is crazy

  • +3

    More like pre COVID prices

  • Very cheap prices. I flew to the USA with Virgin in 2017 and paid a lot more.

    • Same here, was $1300 from BNE to SFO in Aug 2017 for QF

    • These prices (and cheaper) were common in 2017 and on direct flights that included luggage.

    • What was the exchange rate in 2017? How much have prices gone up since then?

      • Between 0.73-0.79 in 2017 so a bit better than now at 0.66.

  • I just got tickets… ugh

  • To bad fiji airways doesn't include luggage anymore for this price like they use too!!

  • +2

Would it be better to pay the 1k to get the 30kg Luggage or fly with Qantas direct for 1.2k or so?

    • +1

Direct, I reckon. It's only a small premium

      • If a 50% premium is small you must be flying first class!

        • I dont think you know maths.

          • @CheapBrah: What is it then?

            • @spaceflight: difference of only $200 or so. comparing with luggage prices, as these headline Fiji airlines rates dont include checked luggage.

              • @disturboed: But it's still a 50% premium from the headline price to a 1.2k direct Qantas fare

  • +10

I flew this flight in 2022: I'm 6'6" and usually find regular seats small but far out I found the seats on the plane for the NADI<->SF flights were tiny… Very uncomfortable, I won't fly this route again without a seat upgrade. Just a warning.

    • Ah good to know.

    • Saved my arse, thank you.

    • +1
      • The flight was in Oct 2022 - I'm not sure but it looks like they got two in 2023? I can't recall the plane unfortunately.

    • To be fair, you're least 8 inches taller than the average person.
That would be like an American leaving a review for a restaurant and saying the portion sizes are too small.

      • +4

On the contrary, I think it’s good to share this kind of info. It’s surprising how seat sizes can differ between airlines (or even aircraft in the same fleet) depending on the configuration of the individual airplane. From the sounds of it, even an ‘average’ person may find it cramped - anyone who needs a bit more space for any reason would really find it quite uncomfortable.

        • +1

Yep and I always like to hear personal experience from tall people because it's often omitted from online reviews just exactly how tall the reviewer is.

      • +1

That would be like an American leaving a review for a restaurant and saying the portion sizes are too small.

Or an Australian… 31% obesity rate is nothing to be proud of.

      • I'm "only" 6'2 and I find all economy seats very uncomfortable as well.

  • +1

My relatives flew this route last month. At Nadi they had to go through customs and immigration. It was a longer layover ~9 hours. You couldn’t wait inside the terminal.

Be warned that airport staff will try to force you to book a hotel for longer layovers even if it’s just during the day. My relatives were able to stand their ground and said they were going to Fiji Gateway resort (across the road) which offers a day visitor pass or day rooms. There is also a courtesy bus from the airport entrance. I think it’s was AUD$20pp for the day visit.

    • Good to know the day pass is only A$20

    • +1

Thanks - having to go through customs and immigration is a pain, so I can cross this off the list. Departing Melbourne, I'm less interested in the cheapest flight, but one that checks my bags all the way through to the destination, if I'm heading anywhere apart from LA.

The best I've flown so far is Air NZ, with a stop over in the Auckland to San Francisco (before United resumed the direct route). The Auckland lounge is nice, and there are showers available. No need to collect bags, go thru customs/immigration - which is the problem of going via Sydney or LA. I was hoping going via Fiji might be an option, but the layover, and your relatives experience suggests not.

Air NZ now has a 16 hour flight direct to New York - so this might be the best way of getting to the US East Coast from Melbourne? Are there any better ways? I think Qantas might have a Sydney-Auckland-NY flight, so I might be able to fly from Melbourne and meet that flight.

  • Too cold for Canada isnt it?

    • It's actually been an unseasonably warm end of Winter this year in large parts of Canada, although there's still some frigid weather to come, particularly in the east. Vancouver by comparison will be quite warm, don't know what conditions are like at Whistler which is another reason people go.

      • global warming

      • Hey @wavesgreen , just wondering if you have it insight into a Canada trip for my parents.

They are looking at flying to VC, cruise to Anchorage (which is only $800), then a land tour via train and planes to Denali, Fairbanks then Whitehorse, then flight back to VC.

Then potentially a RV relocation VC to Calgary (via Jasper/Banff)..Then make their way back to Seattle via Yellowstone national park.

The question is…I can get them a return cruise from VC to Anchorage and back to VC for $1500. The relocation RV is super cheap. But the Anchorage, Denali, Fairbanks, Whitehorse is like $16000 for 2 people!!

If they are doing Jasper / Banff by road + the cruise.. Is the AK to Whitehorse really 16x better?

Or, perhaps just catch the train to the Fairbanks, spend a night or 2, catch the train back to Anchorage, cruise back to VC, and not need to worry about the little plane hops and Uber expensive accom/ food?

        • I've never been to Alaska, it's on my bucket list. In fact your itinerary is my Alaska bucket list.

I've been to BC many times, including Vancouver Island (YVR is the accepted abbreviation for Vancouver city btw, or Vancity if you want to try to be cool) and would highly recommend the coastal cruises.

Can't provide much detailed feedback on the rest other than it sounds awesome and yes Denali and the interior is expensive. I plan on doing it one day myself self-guided over weeks in a 4WD. Hopefully before I cark it… or maybe that will be the trip that finally does me in.

          • @wavesgreen: Cheers. Surprisingly cheap if you get it right with cruise and flight redemptions. We did it in 2018. Just not the Whitehorse part.

Qantas have had direct fares up from Brisbane and other major cities for $1197 for about 5 days now, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone post about that yet?

  • Hey @beatthatflight, we've been looking at fares with Fiji Airways from around the 27th of December, returning late January. CBR-YVR is our best route but could go out of Sydney or Melbourne instead. At the moment that's looking a bit over $2k.

Do you think the holiday season fares will come down if we hold off on booking, or are they more likely to start climbing?

  • Booking with the airline adds $100, baggage adds another $100. Ends up similar to Qantas direct.

  • Is there any love for CBR?

    • No

  • I can’t seem to find the flights I need. Was hoping for a deal from Melbourne for an Easter getaways but when I use the link above from 27th to 14th , Fiji airways doesn’t even show up as an option

Ideally want something that fives me a 4 day stop over in Fiji

    • If you want a 4 day stopover you probably need to do a multicity booking.

      • I can't seem to find the fare advertised in this post even without the stop over

  • Can I increase the lay over time in Nadi and spend like a week there before going on?

  • Hmm why does it stop in Nadi and not Suva? Isn't Suva the capital and largest city? It'd be like flying to Sacramento instead of LA.
