    • fixed link

Its CNET that is offering the free 12 months

    • -1

Uncharged..seems pretty reasonable, we'll give it a chance then.

    • +2

I bought it for $0.00 just fine. Presumably after eastern fixed the link.

      What malware alarms, specifically?

  • +2

Seems like a pretty good deal. No payment information needed, so you'll stay pretty safe. I've already had a CNET account so it took me about 2 mins to get this.

    • I didn't have a CNET account and it still took me about 2 mins to get it. Can't really go wrong for free. :)

  • How to get it guys. I downloaded the software installed it,created a free username password. How to get the classic subscription

    • +2

      Click on 'buy it now'

      • +4

On the CNET website, not in the CyberGhost software.

They give you a key and you add it to your account in the software.

        • Thanks man got it

  • Hmm, what's that network adapter thing it wants me to add when I install?

    • It's a virtual VPN adapter.

      • so if I uninstall the program, the adapter should uninstall too? I've used VPNs before but none said anything about an adapter

        • +1

          Yes, it should uninstall.

Every VPN product I've used installs a virtual adapter. Hamachi does, the Cisco client does, OpenVPN does etc. What VPN software do you think doesn't install one?

        • +2

          PPTP vpn wouldn't

        • Native PPTP, SSTP, L2TP support in Windows.

        • I thought they still created a 'hidden' virtual adapter.

          shrug

          Ah well.

  • Just installed & tested, only US & EU server locations.

    • I connected to DE…

  • Was looking for a VPN, so thank you for posting this deal!

  • Trying it. It's free so given it a + vote.
But considering it's supposedly a paid for service, it's REALLY slow. Have tried a few servers so far and getting at best 1/20th of my normal download speeds…

    • maybe its got to do with peak/off peak times or something
      post a speed test result

      • Or possibly because it's just been released as free on CNET for 24 hours and everyone's testing it out.

    • People who claim during their free promo periods use different servers to their premium members. Their free promo servers are basically demo servers because they have free subscription promos a few times a year.

Speeds won't get too much better than what they are now - I've been using the free prepaid subscriptions to CyberGhost for the past 2-3 years but rarely use it anymore.

    • whats your normal dl speeds.

Or more importantly what is it reducing you to?

  • Just tested on UK server. First time I've watched UK TV in ages. Thanks OP.

    • whats speeds are you getting (speedtest.net)

      • 338ms Ping, 1.36Mbps Download, 1.25Mbps Upload. The image showed me as being in London…

  • +1

Neat. Thanks, OP. I expect it won't be super fast, but can't argue about the price!

  • Fantastic deal thanks OP! :)

  • +3

Finally I can get PvZ from this deal. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/79619

    • LOL That was exactly what I did too :P

        • +2

          4) verify age & type in email and PEAH8R as Code.
          5) ???
          6) Profit

          thanks to the original poster.

        • thanks it works

  • Just tried to get it. got an error has occured

  • +2

The application that it directs you to download is a windows program, but in theory it should also work with Mac OS X (and Linux and Android, but I don't have either of those to test). You just have to download Tunnelblick and get the configuration files from the CyberGhost support site. I say "in theory" though because I haven't yet been able to get it to connect successfully.

Any Mac users had any luck?

    • +1

There are instructions for Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and Windows here:
      http://cyberghostvpn.com/page/software.php
Looks like Mac uses a modified version of OpenVPN

Edit: Having problems authorising to the various VPN servers, anyone else having the same problem?

      • The iOS app costs 3.99 euros unfortunately.

      • +1

From CyberGhost website (http://cyberghostvpn.com/page/account.php?openvpn when logged in):
To use the OpenVPN access to CyberGhost VPN you need to have a valid premium serial activated.
Free and promotion accounts are not able to connect to CyberGhost VPN using OpenVPN.

        :(

        • I wonder how it tells the difference between the Windows and the Mac/Linux OpenVPN clients. As far as I can tell, the Windows app is just OpenVPN with their custom UI in front of it.

  • Fantastic Deal. Wish I can give you more than 1 +

  • +2

Seems like you can get multiple copies of it using the same email.

    • Can you add 2 keys to the same account for 24 months??

      • Tried, Thats a no

        • u can but you have to wait till next year

      • your 12 months subscription starts when u activate the key
theoretically, get as many keys as you want and activate one every year

        • heh, ill grab a couple! :D

        • Pretty sure the keys have an expiry.. Cyberghost have these free prepaid promos on 2-3 times a year anyway. I've been getting free subscriptions for the past 3 or so years.

  • What can we do with vpn?

    • +3

Use the internet without everything you do tracking back to your IP address.

It's generally used for either privacy reasons or things of a questionable legality.

      • lol @ questionable legality haha

        • +1

Mostly use it to watch online tv from other countries (of which access to otherwise blocked due to AU IPs).

  • So instead of running torrent on my NAS box now i can run it on this VPN? 20GB only? Hmmmm.. So is vpn = cloud storage? Or vpn=seed box?

    • +1

VPN = looks like your internet connection is from a different IP address from a different country depending on what server you connect to

    • +1

VPN is Virtual Private Network and it only relates to where the traffic goes (or how it is routed)

      Normally [you] ——> [website/whatever]
      VPN [you] ——> [VPN Provider] ——> [website/whatever]

This way it looks like the VPN provider is accessing whatever you are doing on the net and it is their IP that gets logged etc

      • alright. will google more later of what i can do with vpn but i grabbed this now.

  • umm, is it safe to do payments and etc through this?

    • +1

they would tell you yes, but personally I wouldn't, especially a company unknown to me and at this price tag, by using a VPN they could see all your data (and some would argue but so does your ISP without a VPN)

edit: of course banking sites etc would be encrypted and through normal use I don't think they could steal your details/money but in the age of weak/bogus security certificates it doesn't hurt to be paranoid.

      • thanks for your response!

  • Any gurus got a howto for TomatoUSB router client setup?

Great deal if for no other reason than testing a different VPN provider.

The two I've paid for were both slow and not worth the $80/year.

  • -1

This is one of the best deals i've seen on ozbargain.

    • +6

      And yet no up vote…

      • +4

        And yet he negs…

        • +1

yup my finger moved as i clicked! (im an idiot). hope everyone's ok.

        • There will be an inquest into this at the next National OzBargain Assembly, don't you worry.

        • +1

          Don't worry!
All you have to do is scroll up to the deal title.
There should be a tab underneath labelled "votes".
Click on it, then click "revoke"!
          Done!

        • Neg vote revoked.

  • +2

Way cool deal, now I can watch the daily show.

    • It's probably better to watch Comedy Central shows through this method as you won't suffer from potential VPN bottlenecks.

      • I've tried modify headers in the past but it didnt work for me.

edit.. I tried again and it does work, thx for the tip.

        • How'd you get it to work? I followed tantryl's link, but still doesn't work. Tried clearing cookies/cache, still no go.

        • Most likely you didn't add the header right or didn't enable the add-on correctly.

  • Alright for Steam sales?

    • Should be fine. I use Your Freedom. It has free servers with limited bandwidth but you don't need much just to make the purchase. You turn off the VPN to download and play. I've bought plenty of games this way never any issue.

  • Already have a paid VPN so this will be a nice back-up, great post. Thanks OP.

  • Done - Thanks, a bit slower than expected but my first attempt at a VPN so I am happy to give it a try!
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/2278802209.png

  • Great find OP.

Not sure will use it but grabbed it for now.

  • Is it possible to use the VPN to get US content onto my WDTV live box?

    • See if your router supports VPNs - If so, you may be able to use its VPN functionality to connect your whole network to the VPN. Then you should be able to route your WDTV via the VPN.

      • Thats actually a good idea, though it would also reduce the throughput of the WAN conn. to all PCs in your LAN. Right?

  • We have an interesting demographic of voters voting on this deal :-)

  • Getting this on my phone after clicking $6.02 button: " An error has occurred
Product does not exist! At least one of the requested products does not exist."

    • this happened on my tablet as well earlier this morning, but link works fine on computer.

  • installed
    it runs but goes nowhere?

  • I don't have a CNET account, but I hit the "buy" link and it asked for an email address and name, that was it. Licence appeared on the next screen.

  • Did not work for me, wants me to pay the $50

    • +1

You need to click 'buy it now' on the CNET Website, not directly with cyberghost.

This is a good deal, awesome.

  • Worked fine, got key and downloaded client. Thanks guys.

  • Hey guys… I already have a VPN but it does not have a Russian Server..

Can anyone that has tried this confirm weather or not it has a Russian Server?

    Thanks ;)

  • 6 hours left guys and gals

    Be quick

  • nice deal! signed up.. do you have to use their software?

    • reply to myself - I ended up finding the answer, haven't tried it though: "Any OpenVPN client should work in Linux with Cyberghost. You need to have a paid subscription in order to use the "native" OpenVPN Support. Log into the account management center and you'll find a section "OpenVPN" where you can download instructions and configuration files for LInux/android etc."

    • That $5 can get me $10 of maccas with the recent amex deal.

I got the shakes that'll make you quake. I got the fries that'll cross your eyes. I got that burgers that'll… I just got burgers.

      • I think if you have an Amex you can afford both half price Maccas and Usenet?

        • Just because it is affordable doesn't make it a worth-while, same goes for comparing Usenet with a free VPN.

ethereal seems to have no idea what VPN is to compare it with Usenet.
