        • On paper it may be about 20% faster, but the real life experience is that the Intel fails to maintain sustained performance for long periods of time:

          You can see here that is uses 50% more power, and in a similar chassis and almost similar cooling architecture…

          • @OpayuOnam: Thanks that's a good comparison link. Have another look though. You picked a reading for Cinebench with and external monitor connected, while for the other 4 tests, e.g. Idle without monitor the Intel median observation is using less power. The Intel outperforms on Cinebench, so it's no surprise it uses more power in that case if it's processing more. Overall benchmarks say 7% win for the Intel, which makes sense.

            If any CPU slows with sustained hard use, it's usually because it's being throttled because of overheating. In those cases the cooling is inadequate.

            • @trevor99: Sorry I actually meant to show the like for like E16 AMD vs E16 Intel models, but ended up with bad copy pasta.

              Scroll down to the Cinebench R15 Multi loop test section, search for E16 and add the Intel variant.
              You'll see what I mean, the AMD has a flat consistent higher liner, the Intel starts lower, and after the first two tests drops significantly. This has been the case for Intel laptops for a while, unless you're getting a semi beefy laptop with big heatpipes you won't get the performance out of them. They also run super hot.
              Then scroll down to the power usage section and add e16, under maximum load Intel is 20% more power hungry for less performance (sustained which is important for gaming).

            • @trevor99: That's a Samsung Galaxy with the Intel chip not the Lenovo so unfair to compare. Also it's a Ryzen 7 in the E16, a different chip to this deal. In any case I'd say a reasonable way to summarise for this deal is to say the Intel is around 7% better overall, pretty much in line with their asking prices.

                AMD starts better and stays almost flat.

                I have both AMD and Intel versions of the P16s at work and have run back to back on both, and for Dev work on VMs you can tell the difference between Intel and AMD with edge for AMD.

                • @OpayuOnam: Thanks that's interesting. For a sudden step down like that the Samsung may have got hot, would be good to know.

                  • @trevor99: The thing is both the Intel Samsung and the Intel ThinkPad have a drop in performance. And that's not a new thing. Intel has been like this for ages in slim laptops. AMD with Ryzen, shows everyone sustained performance in slim laptops is possible…
                    Intel in workstations and chunky gaming laptops fairs better and is able to match or overcome AMD, but at the cost of extra power usage and heat…
                    They've been deceiving customers for ages by only focusing on the initial burst performance rather than sustained performance.
                    So yeah, for any recent laptop, my money would go to AMD, they simply work better more consistently.

                    This is also ignoring the huge battery advantage of AMD over Intel (like for like).

      Looks ok but Dell has less bright screen and lower res, older cpu, slower memory. But higher storage.
