Not as hot as the the Merciless Pepper of Quetzalacatenango, also known as the Guatemalan Insanity Pepper

Is that the one Homer Simpson trips out on?

This is my fav chili sauce - full of actual flavour and packing reasonable heat - the only downside is the small quantity for what you pay.

Then there's Koon Yick Wah Kee, Franks XXXtrahot then Lao Gan Ma.

I'd consider Cristal, Texas Pete and Valentina as mid tier.

Unpopular opinion, but I find Sriracha flavourless and overly sweet.

    • What do you usually use this on?

      • +3

As @jetblack mentioned below, it goes best with Tex Mex, but I have to say it's so good that I use this on anything including Asian cuisine, or even plain boiled eggs

        • Thanks! Ordered one to try

      • Great on fried eggs, or tacos!

I reckon all those hot sauces you mentioned aren't generally comparable because they're all suited to different cuisines. I wouldn't use an Asian hot sauce in my Mexican, I wouldn't use franks or El yucateco in Asian, etc…

As far as Mexican /Tex mex, El yucateco is my go to, and then even within that range it depends on what exactly im eating as to which variant I'll use.

Also, Valentinas is fkn great on Popcorn. Learned that from a bar in Mexico.

    • I have their Picante Verde Salsa variety and it's delicious. Haven't tried this original version but given how good the one I already have is I'm gonna pick up 3 bottles

Glad to finally see someone that's not fawning over Valentina, I've tried it and it's good, but Frank's and El Yucateco dunk all over it. Never heard of Koon Yick Wah Kee so I'll have to check it out

    • Is koon yick wah kee the one they give you at yum cha if you ask for chilli sauce?

I agree with your take on sriracha.. I think the Thai version is better.

      • +1

        Yep that's the one!

        • Nice I need to get me a bottle

    • I find the Tabasco brand jalapeno one to be better. You don't need to use as much either.

    • Have you tried El Yucateco Caribbean Sauce? That has great fruity scotch bonnet flavour!

    • Then there's Koon Yick Wah Kee, Franks XXXtrahot then Lao Gan Ma.

I'd consider Cristal, Texas Pete and Valentina as mid tier.

Agreed on all points, but haven't tried Franks. Where do you buy it? Amazon doesn't have it

my current favourite hot sauce. very tasty, good heat

  • What percentage of the sauce is capsicum/pepper?

    • +1

Not sure, though ingredients are usually listed in descending order by weight and in this sauce habanero pepper is listed as the first ingredient. There’s no overwhelming vinegar flavour in this one. The habanero and spices are really the dominant flavour. It’s definitely one of the better mass produced hot sauces around. It does pack a punch (12,000 scoville I believe) though not as hot as a lot of the crazy death sauces and stuff out there.

      • Thanks for the reply :)

      A bit late, but it's 40%

      • Thank you :)

My favourite hot sauce is El Yucateco Caribbean, so keen to give this a try!

100% Agree - just replied to a comment above before seeing this… great fruity flavour.

haven't tried that one, will give it a go thx

  • Love this brand - so cheap. I’m a big fan of their Black Label Reserve at $6.95 too

  • Try old bone’s jawbreaker for a nice kick. I prefer the smoked garlic extra hot.

OP’s one is nice but quite mild.

Looks interesting, don't mind having a variety of hot sauces on hand.

The Byron bay habanero goes alright for the price from woolies:

  • Full of fiery habaneros

I doubt it. If that's what you want then make yourself.

1kg chillis, 50g salt, 500ml apple cider vinegar, 500ml water, blitz, simmer 20 min, enjoy!

    • Interesting to read it has canola oil in it, so not idea.

Also the heat is also subjective and tolerance dependant. It wouldn't be full of habaneros (not sure what percentage the label says) but the comments/reviews on amazon range from got heat to got kick to to so-so. Definitely not extra hot.
I looked it up and it's 11,250 Average Scoville Units so I think it's fairly mild but nothing wrong with that.

This is hotter than I was expecting (poured a fair bit out), pretty Smokey too.. nice!

    • +1

Yeah it's hot enough and has flavour. I hate hot sauces with stupid names and have to quote their super scoville score. Most of the time they're just hot, and have no flavour

      • +1

True, it's a pretty good one. I agree it should be about taste not just heat. I've still got some Culley's No. 10 & Blair's - can't taste much of the food you put that stuff on, haha.
