This is a fantastic airline 100%, this is not your normal Mainland Chinese carrier - this is a Taiwanese Carrier which imo even surpasses the quality of carriers out of Japan and the Middle East. I have had nothing but 100% reviews on China Airlines and EVA Air across both short haul, intermediate haul and long hauls - in both Economy and Business.

The baggage allowance is also very generous and per the Qantas and China Airlines agreement, QF status holders can use their respective QF lounges in Australia

Wait till you get to fly on the Hello Kitty livery EVA or Pikachu livery China Airlines.

      • I've flown hello Kitty on Eva air in J back in 2019. Had fun

    • +7

I like this airline but I don't rate it higher than China Southern.

Are there any deals for Taipei?

      • +3

I used to train China Airlines pilots out of Jandakot and Albany

possibly the worst on the planet. That was late 90's, so may be better now.

The stories I could tell are mind blowing

        • +4

China airline had a record of major accidents in the 90s. That explains.

Care to share those mind blowing stories?

          • +6

@homie: Sorry, I actually meant China Southern airlines! China Airlines and Eva Air have fantastic safety records. I know pilots who work with them, and they generally praise the training standards.

You have to remember that this was early days and it wasn't an easy transition, all they needed to learn was 200 English words for ATC. It was a nightmare for air Traffic Control.

            some stories:
The second solo navigation exercise that most pilots do involves flying from the east over Perth before returning to Jandakot. One day due to burning off the smoke visibility was really bad. Everyone not associated with China airlines, called up Perth traffic and asked for diversion around the smoke. EVERY China Southern pilot went straight into the smoke got to a panic and we're calling Mayday and getting extremely upset. It was a fairly major incident as it caused a lot of havoc in Perth control airspace.

One of their pilots on a solo navigation exercise had his head down reading his map. He didn't realise that his plane was starting to go inverted. Instead of straightening up, he pulled through, causing excess G-forces, which caused him to blackout. The Grob is a very stable aircraft when he came to the aircraft was flying level. He noticed the aircraft wasn't flying very well, so he did the sensible thing and landed at a nearby airstrip. When he was taxiing in at Jandakot airport, ATC noticed something was dragging behind him and called up the flight School. Apparently the high stress manoeuvre had ripped out one of the elevators and it was hanging behind the aircraft by the cables. He told the flying school that although it wasn't flying very well, it was okay to fly back. The stress had damaged the aircraft's wings and was basically a write-off.

They destroyed at least 2 aircraft more due to bad decision-making and in the end due to safety concerns they transferred the operation to Albany.

A friend if mine was a techie when they were leasing the flight simulators to them( this was qualified air crew, doing 6 monthly assessments). They noticed when a CS crew used the sim it smelt of smoke so they reviewed the camera footage. Instead of conducting training, they were all sitting there smoking and not actually using it!!

The major problem was that the schools weren't prepared for it all. I lasted 2 months before my concerns made me quit.
A crash course (no pun intended) in English was inadequate, they should have spent a greater time understanding human safety factors and learning about decision making before throwing them into an aircraft.

It was an early time in the Chinese airline expansion.

I'm sure it's much better now. This was 20+ years ago

            • @slipperypete: if I made such a damning comment about an airline and got the name wrong, I’d delete it

              • @jaefkbgvbqldqif: Or you can accept your mistake and own it rather than run.

I got the name wrong! I explained it. Deleting it when people have read it is just cowardly

                • -2

@slipperypete: that’s nice but it makes little sense when the correction is further down in the thread, since people oftentimes skim the discussion, are less likely to start reading a 2000 word comment, so on and so forth

                  • @jaefkbgvbqldqif:

@homie: Sorry, I actually meant China Southern airlines! China Airlines and Eva Air have fantastic safety records. I know pilots who work with them, and they generally praise the training standards.

                    Was my opening sentence

                    am I missing something here?

                    • @slipperypete: Where is the 2000 word comment? Mine was 463 words. I'm thinking you are referring to something totally different as both statements from you are completely inaccurate!

                      • -1

@slipperypete: imagine doing that to a small business lol, how rude

                        • @jaefkbgvbqldqif: I'm not quite sure I understand.

Then again, I also misread the airline. That could be embarrassing going to the wrong desk at the airport, especially considering the love between the two countries

    • Excellant, I have heard they are good, but I was still worried. I have 6 flights with them in a couple of months.

    • +1

Only flown business with them. Their A321 and 777 products are off the chain. Their A330 leaves a lot to be desired.

      • +1

China Airlines has 24 787s scheduled for delivery from 2025 to 2026 which will replace the entire A330-300 network

        • Good news for future me if I find another reward ticket then

    • +2

Qantas lounge access is only available to QF code sharing flights with China Airline. I was denied access to Qantas and only allowed to go to Marhaba Lounge because it was a CI flight.

      • Ahh yep you are right, CLPO allows entrance into lounges regardless of carrier. My apologies

    • +1

per the Qantas and China Airlines agreement, QF status holders can use their respective QF lounges in Australia

Not on a regular CI flight number, only if they're on a Qantas flight number on the codeshare routes.

  • +3

I flew to Japan via China Airlines a year ago and had no complaints, really impressed me.

    • -6

      Japan impresses most people.

  • +3

https://youtu.be/c54ngEh75kk?si=tCoqFNruUAA4dB8l - A recent video review of their long haul economy. A pretty solid product.

Considering Scoot was basically having flights to Europe from around a thousand, you might as well pay a few hundred more to get a proper full service airline.

  • +2

I've flown them many times too. It's worth mentioning that it's still just the usual discomfort of average fairly tight seating etc, and definitely not on par with, say, Singapore Airlines for food and service, but it's fine so I'd happily fly with them if the price was right.

Some connections have terribly long layovers, so check your flights before committing. It's easy for Australians to go through immigration and visit Taipei for the day, but you'll be pretty tired! Taiwan is a lovely country, with fairly easy navigation in Taipei and often helpful people.

    • +3

So much easier now they have MRT from Taoyuan directly to Taipei main train station. Get into the city. Enjoy the great food (stinky tofu…) and bubble tea shops everywhere, night market if timing is right, Back to the airport and transit

    • I hear this a lot about SIA, but I flew with them return to Europe last year and came away feeling very underwhelmed…

      • Oh I definitely wouldn't say they're fantastic. They just have a very reliable product with less unevenness between flights. I don't think there's anything that makes one (non-low-cost) airline's Economy class experience markedly better than another's, as long as the staff are professional, the food isn't terrible and the entertainment has a lot of choices.

  • -3

    Is China Airlines safe ?

    • +1

      Will break if dropped

    • Depends on how you look at it. Airline accidents are far and few between. When they were a state-owned airline up to early 2000s they had a number of accidents.

During that time my family would rather fly Singapore Airlines so we flew extra kilometers and spent extra time just to avoid them. They haven't had any issues since…2002 I think so I have no issue with flying them now.

      • Yeah, Eva was the go to. China Air didn't have that good of a rep back then.

    • +6

Only if they don't use American crap Boeing planes!

      • +2

Still better than a country who hasn't got the sovereign capability to manufacture cars, planes, let alone submarines lmao🤣

      No, they don't wear condoms.

Layover: Taipei. Australians do not need a visa to visit Taiwan, so you can explore Taipei during the layover.

True. However, I do believe there is a requirement to spend no less than 4 hours per layover day at the beach with binoculars.

    • -2

Watch the F-16s fly overhead? Or watch for amphibious boats coming over?

In Taiwan I prefer heading to the central mountains.

    • LMAO

  • Nice prices.

  • Am I doing it wrong.. some syd to Prague bookings link to "aunt Betty" rather than direct thru airline .. is that trustworthy?

    • Also ~40hr each way total travel time. Researching if they offer hotel? (like Korean Air do for example).. or if not what options would be avail (family of 4, 2 kids under 6). Might be too good to be true at that price!

      • +1

Aunt Betty belongs to Flight Centre. No idea if that makes it more trustworthy.

I wouldn't expect any extras like hotel in that price. After all, it's practically half price.

        • Ta. Yeah fair enough.
That was more about possibilities for stopover.
Just never heard of aunt Betty!
          Research ongoing….

    • Hey @rep.. I realise your scope may be limited but comments on "aunt Betty" please?
I have never taken much faith in companies that give themselves almost nonsense names like this.. but these prices are hard to pass.

      • +3

I’ve booked with AB before. Saved a packet. Would do it again. No issues. As others said, it’s a subsidiary of Flight Centre group and is a registered travel provider, you just have more restrictions if trying to book extras, meals, seats etc, but it’s all pretty well documented. Just don’t expect to be able to make random changes and add-ons.

        • Correcting name spelling and middle name issues; can be a problem.

Why does Taiwanese airlines call itself ‘ China Airlines’ not ‘Taiwan Airlines’?

    • +6

Not sure if inflammatory on purpose or just sheer ignorant.

Taiwan's official name is Republic of China.

    • +2

Taiwan still claims to be China, hence the name China Airlines

      • +5

It’s funny, while historically the goal of the ruling government of Taiwan at the time was to take over China, nowadays even if they don’t want to, the CCP forces them to lay a stake in China. Obviously the CCP also wouldn’t tolerate another party being in charge….

I think most of the people dont know this:

China: Is not the country "China" that we are talking about. It is the area, region includes China (the country), Taiwan, HK, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines….

The country itself calls: Republic of China and its People. We shorten them as China. That makes some people confuse. But in writing language, we have different term to express China-The Region vs China-The Country.

Stop here if you don't get above. Below will make you even more confuse.

The citizen born/live in the "China Region" are call Destination-Chinese, For examples Singapore Chinese, Malaysian Chinese…
The citizen born/live in the "China Country" CANNOT call "People's Republic of Chinese", so they are being shorten as Chinese. But this Chinese are different to "other Chinese"

Australian Chinese: The citizen of Australia, but ancestor from China-The Country
Australia Hong Kong: The citizen of Australia, but ancestor from China -The region.

      Hope this help!!

      • China: Is not the country "China" that we are talking about. It is the area, region includes China (the country), Taiwan, HK, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines….

Sure this helps as long as you provide source/context, as what you're giving us here sounds a bit out of it.

China is defs the big country everyone knows in most contexts.

      • +1

I think you are trying to explain the difference of China the nation (Chun Gou) vs China the heritage (Chun Hua)?

In this case since PRC declared it's independence from ROC and took representation of 'China the country' at the UN. China the country is not a good representation of Chun Hua anymore as they destroyed all the cultural, heritage artefacts in their cultural revolution.

Most context people nowadays read 'China' as the PRC country, but 'China' Airlines in this case it's the Chun Hua China as in the heritage.

  • Did BNE - VIE return July last year. Great airline, layover was long which was perfect to explore Taipei and surrounds. IF I hadn't used Qantas points this year I'd be booking this again this year

What if China attacks Taiwan before my flight?

    • +2

Rest assure, You will be dead before then!

    • Fat chance that would happen. But then you are lucky if it happens BEFORE your flight, flight gets cancelled.

Or flight (if U are already in the air) would get diverted to many other places along the route, Darwin, PNG, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan mainland, Okinawa….if these airfields hasn't yet been damaged.

Flown China Airlines a few times and they’re definitely in my top 3. Fantastic service and Taipei is a great city to explore.

    • Do you have any ideas for cheap hotels not too far from Taipei airport to rest during the long layover? Found inside terminal obviously hundreds, but not sure on transport or reliability of other hotels outside. Have 2 kids under 6 to consider! Thanks

      • I've not sure about hotels but I did have to kill hours before my flight a few weeks ago and we spent it at a shopping centre complex nearby (rather than going to Taipei). My 3-year-old loved it and I highly recommend it if you have young kids.

From memory it was 4 or 5 metro stops away from the airport (maybe 15 minutes).

It has an American-style outlet there and there's an indoor play centre there.

If you go through the outlet you'll get to a different shopping centre. It has a very good Aquarium (much better than say the Melbourne one), and another indoor play centre (a bit pricy I thought but we spent a bit of time there). It has a sushi train restaurant at the food court area and my kid loved that.

There were other things around walking distance there too (a lake, calligraphy art center, High Speed Rail Museum etc) although it was raining so we didn't do those.

        • My guess is Linkou. There is a mall right on top of the mrt station, or my suggestion is to walk 10min to the Mitsui Outlet Park.

I went to Taiwan last December and flew with China Airlines. Happy to report that they are very good. Not Singapore Airlines good but still very good. Generous pitch in economy, good inflight entertainment…and the airport in Taipei is pretty good too. There are plenty of restaurants and it is very well connected via bus and trains to get to the city.

  • +2

They are Taiwanese Airlines. Not the mainland Chinese airlines. Very good price to Europe but not good price to Taiwan or other Asia destinations.

  • +2

Can confirm. China Airlines is a really good airline and their service are really good. The airport has plenty to do as well and they accept all international cards, unlike in Mainland China where all I had was water because no one accepted Visa/Mastercard in China.

    • because no one accepted Visa/Mastercard in China.

      Do they accept American Express?

      • -1

Don't do that, that would be hurtful to the Chinese spirit, and they have a law for that. At least for clothes.

      • haha lolll.. but yea that's Hong Kong. A bit different to mainland China :)

  • I called their service line in Sydney and the staff was really soft and friendly. Will take their flight to Rome in July and looking forward to experience the soft & hard product.

    • +2

and the staff was really soft

Are you allowed to squeeze them?

      • not over the phone haha

    • Rome in July and looking forward to experience the soft & hard product.

I think you mean Amsterdam, not Rome.

  • Signed up, got my member #, trying to book 10% off intl flights (sign up offer), getting weird error 4002 .. their call centre cant/wont help.
Even then, have to pay ~70AUD per person, per flight .. so for 4, 2 legs each way = ~1200AUD just to sit in a seat?
Far out, how did we get here

    • any via Aunt Betty, those seat costs appear to increase to almost $1500 AUD.. amazing
so 25% of the flight costs are just the seats .. so funny, strange, and disappointing. like a 5th person travelling with us, Mr Seat.

    • $70 to HAVE a seat, or to choose your preferred seat? Is $70 for a standard seat???

      • "preferred" seat as it was named was 90 AUD I think from memory. "Standard"was 75?
I opted to not pre purchase, and 48 hrs before flight can choose for free (probably like every one else on the flight I reckon..)
        Fingers crossed
