Amazon banned shipping of these tools to Aus likely due to protests from members of the Australian tool cartel. Recently however, the seller appears to have gotten around this by hiding the price of the tool by requiring you to add to cart to see it.

This saw is currently on a 'deal' at total tools for $319 and is usually $419. It's at least equivalent to the Makita 40v for less than half the price.
It also has a quiet mode which essentially just drops the speed of the saw which on the face of it may seem pointless but In effect this mode actually makes it very capable for cutting metal.

The Hikoki 36v recipro saw (which is considered by many reviewers as the best recipro on the market) can also be grabbed for $120USD.

If you buy both you've easily saved enough to justify buying into another battery ecosystem. On top of that, the Hikoki 36v batteries also work on their 18v tools unlike the Makita 40v.

  • Hard to see why they would ban shipping these, considering its a skin with no battery included.
I wonder what their reason is?

    • +4

      Because of the price difference.

      • +9

Most likely westfarmers group are using their financial influence to make this happen (the same way they put masters out of business). Otherwise this shits on ozito and ryobi for just a little more that wont hurt the budget

        • Is that really why masters is gone? Is Netflix making a doco? I have been shocked by how expensive tools are but never thought it’s a local/country-wide price thing. Guess if they could do it to food, they wouldn’t stop at just food.

          • +3

            @frugalftw: Its a monopoly dude.
No one can compete with bunnings.
They are also so flexible with returns, i even got my money back for a chair that broke i bought from them 3 years after

            • +2

@easternculture: Yep that's because they sell on consignment so they couldn't care less about returns

            • @easternculture: That sounds like Bunnings has dominated the market by providing good post sales service, which is what the consumer wants? It might come at a cost, sure, that is the same scenario as the Apple devices. I mean, the iPhone more expensive in this country due to the accc rules, retailers banked the warranty and whatnot into the cost of the devices. It really should be that they stop reselling crap but it doesn’t seem to be the case yet.

          • +4

@frugalftw: Yeah, it really is a conspiracy. Bunnings and the tool cartels don't want the universal CAS battery system to take off. Everyone should jump on board with Metabo - Makita quality at Ryobi prices, and it's an ethical brand that is pushing for the universalisation of 18V and 36V tool batteries.

            • @besttechadvisor: There is also AMPShare which has Bosch based batteries and cells.

            • @besttechadvisor: I’m not convinced on the Metabo quality. They make some stuff in Germany which I’m sure is great but I have a Metabo recip saw made in China and it’s not as nice as my Bosch and Dewalt tools. The battery keeps slipping off because the clip doesn’t work. It doesn’t have that X factor you get from great quality tools, like my Bosch impact driver. Having said that, my Dewalt drill has a wobble, only very slight but still.

            • @besttechadvisor: Wow I didn't even know there are universal batteries. I would get metabo then if I were to get cordless ones. Was just talking to someone about these camping batteries getting smaller and eventually we can just use them with old tools with tails. The corded ones are lighter and smaller, or same size but meaner.

  • nice

  • Tool cartel?

    • +6

      Westfarmers/metacash/super retail group

    • +2

yes the people that move beyond just being "tools"

  • +1

What's a battery for one of these worth?

    • Metabo tools and batteries tend to be Makita quality but Ryobi prices.

I'm not sure why they haven't taken off in Australia yet, especially with the universal CAS battery system - if people started supporting CAS tool manufacturers, more manufacturers would adopt CAS batteries, and the cost of batteries would drop to Ozito/Ferrex levels.

      • +1

What is a CAS battery system?

    • Just don't confuse US Metabo HPT with rest of world Metabo. They are not the same but owned by the same company when Hitachi Koki bought Metabo germany and themselves were bought out by KKR

US 'Metabo HPT' = Hikoki in Australia
Rest of world Metabo = Metabo (except US where it is not sold).

This tool is Metabo HPT which is a Hikoki tool and does not use the CAS battery system of proper Metabo. It is however compatible with Hikoki batteries.

Oooh, any deals on a battery and charger then? I do like how hikoki is backwards compatible.

    • +1

this is still available and suitable for the 36v Metabo HPT gear:-
      $179 for battery charger and grinder - HIKOKI 18V 1 X 2.5AH/5.0AH 125MM ANGLE GRINDER KIT

      https://www.totaltools.com.au/177026-hikoki-18v-1-x-2-5ah-5-…

      • What's with the 2.5AH/5AH? I thought AH was a unit of energy storage and wouldn't be relative to whether the device was 18 or 36V?

        • +5

AH (Amp Hours) is relative to the voltage, it means the battery is 2.5AH running at 36v or 5AH at 18V

        • +2

The battery can do both so its 36v 2.5Ah or 18v 5Ah

Edit: should have hit refresh before replying. Already covered.

  • +1

The price of the 36v Metabo battery is eye-watering at retail.

KO version off aliexpress is a bit cheaper.

Is this deal worth it for someone outside the Metabo ecosystem…

  • The dual voltage is interesting but i would it make that much difference?

Its just running 5 cells in series 2 banks in parallel (5s2p) or 10 in series. You can draw the same power from the battery in either setup. You can get away with thinner wiring at 36v though.

    • It's more of a compatibility across both 18V and 36V tools which is the benefit (i.e. 1 battery across both tool voltages).

    • If the tool requires a lot of power, there are less losses at a higher voltage so it makes more sense.

  • Blinked and just realised that the Makita 18V battery will not work on this.
