Illegal to ride on public roads in VIC

    • +2

      Also in nsw

      • Yet they are selling it in Sydney

        • Nonsense really.

        • +1

Yeah crazy! Especially since private roads don't exist! /s

        • They do deliver to other states.

          • @keejoonc:

They do deliver to other states.

In which state(s) is this legal to ride on public roads?

            • @jv: In ACT it's legal to ride on-road in residential streets where there are no footpaths. Not sure about other states/territory.

              • @Banj0: In VIC, the ones with seats are illegal. Not sure if that is the case in Canberra.

                • +3

@jv: People riding all shapes and sizes here - scooters with seats, mono-wheel things, skateboards. Basically it all comes under “personal mobility devices”, and they don’t exclude scooters with seats. Bicycles are a different thing, as are the big ‘scooters’ that persons with mobility issues might use.

It seems like there’s less restrictions now than there were a few years back. Motor output used to be capped like e-bikes, but that’s no longer the case. Some definitions have evolved too. It’s almost as though the govt is actively trying to improve the laws!

Speed ‘limiting’ is a bit fuzzy, as one of the regs specifies that devices must not be able to travel above 25kph on a flat surface. There is no information on what is an acceptable limitation on this (soft setting in the scooter control interface? Hard firmware setting? Throttle control?). Obviously, many e-scooters are capable of travelling faster than this, but are limited by firmware. I think this is a bit of a silly spec, as it is difficult to enforce.

There are certainly speed limits (25kph max anywhere, then lower limits for pedestrian footpaths and when navigating crossings etc). I feel like using existing radar tech to pick people up for speeding may be easier than trying to determine if a device is speed limited and fining them for using it whether or not they actually were speeding. After all, we don’t put you off the road for riding a motorcycle capable of hitting 300kph.

I’m sure people are still going to lift speed limiters in these, ride without helmets, and generally do the wrong thing. That goes for bicycles/cars/whatever. It’s hard to legislate for stupid.

motorcycles are registered and have to meet many requirements to be registered.

                    • @jv: My point is more that it's probably stupidity in use that we should be policing rather than the potential for stupidity. I don't think registration changes that for motorcycles - it doesn't make the riders any smarter, nor does it make 300kph any safer.

It might mean that the motorcycles are engineered better…though, there's probably an argument to be had there about some of the registrable machines coming into Australia these days.

                      • @Banj0:

I don't think registration changes that

                        yes it does…

then you can report them to police in case of damage/injuries.

                        • @jv: Ahh…so…you mean for identification then (numberplates)?

                          • @Banj0: and knowing who the owner/rider is…

                            insurance etc…

            • @jv: Perfectly legal in QLD.

    • Just curious, what makes this illegal if you ride it under 25?

      • In VIC, the power, and the seat

        • Very uncomfortable without the seat

          • @competitions: Then get a legal registered motorbike.

unregistered motorbikes are not allowed in VIC

            • @jv: Unregistered motorbikes are allowed in VIC but you can't ride 'em on public roads or spaces.

              • @rodericb:

you can't ride 'em on public roads

                Read my first comment…

@jv: I did but felt your later comment needed clarification.

                  • @rodericb: It needs to be read in context with the entire discussion.

I don't think it is age restricted

    • i would love to get one in SA oh wait, its also illegal.

  • +1

Can this be set up without the seat?

  • +4

some people on here seriously got no life out in the real world.

    • -2

Are you suggesting they just use an old fashioned push bike?

      • I’d hazard a guess and say it was directed at the endless comments about it being illegal in certain states.

        • -1

about it being illegal in certain states.

          It is…

  • Anyone have experience with this brand? Can the seat be removed?

    • Can the seat be removed?

      Yes, for $5 extra…

    • I would avoid Engwe if buying again. I have their Engine Pro. I have regrets.

That said, PCMarket are top notch with customer service.

  • I see the JV police are in attendance.

Anyone got any comments about the quality of this scooter?

Live in QLD so JV's rants don't apply here, curious if this is decent model compared to others out there.

    Thanks
