Getting Luggage out on International Connecting Flight

I have upcoming flight from Melbourne to Malaysia, transit at Singapore with Jetstar. There’s like 4 hours transit time.

Would it be possible to ask for my luggage to be taken out in Singapore? I have alcohol to give my mate in Singapore.

Then, check in again?

Could be wrong, but I think the only way to do that is on 2 seperate flights. I don’t think they would allow you to change your ticket to seperate flights if its a connection as they wouldn’t want to make skip lagging easy.

So, if thats the case, you would have no way to organise baggage going out (and you too - having to leave and re check in for the next leg).

    Could be wrong though 🤷🏽‍♂️

      And we are talking Jetstar.

    • +2

You are wrong. Just ask the first airline to 'short-tag' your bags to SIN only.

@Tony-Abbott @Flying Ace Thanks for the advise. It worked. I had one luggage sent automatically to my next flight and had one picked up in Singapore.
I talked to the jetstar lady who was very helpful.

Going out from immigration only took 20-25mins max. And getting back only took less than 15mins.
During that time, i went out to see Jewel, had dinner at Terminal 1 and met my mate there. Thanks!

You’re welcome! I’ve flown through Changi dozens of times so I’m familiar with how it all works. Glad you enjoyed your time there!

    • +2

You can ask the airline to tag your luggage only to Singapore.

if you've booked that under 1 ticket, then your alcohol wont be meeting you in Singapore :)

  • Take it as cabin baggage, problem sorted! I have had no issues going through Singapore immigration for a few hours!

    • Not possible due to liquid limit unless its duty free. May get one from duty free i guess

When I flew to Manchester I was over the alcohol liquid limit by I think 2 or 4 litres, with carry on that I bought at Australian duty free (I should have bought at one of the connection airports, but oh well). At the exit there was two clearly marked options, nothing to declare or something to declare. I just went through the nothing to declare one and no on stopped me, I got away with it! Scariest two minutes of my life though. Well, second scariest.

        • good way to get a hefty fine, no no risk no reward. have done a couple of times with cigs, but not worht the risk anymore.

      • get something other than alcohol to your mates, problem solved, why make your life harder for trivial things?

Would it be possible to ask for my luggage to be taken out in Singapore ?

Your luggage and you would then need to clear 'customs' for that to happen.

I have few alcohol to give my mate in Singapore.

    I don't think you do.

How much alcohol, you can't take as carry on?

  • +1

    Buy at the airport.

  • Assuming it is on one ticket, you could ask them to short check your bags to SIN only, but no idea of the chance they will do it.

  • +2

Ask Jetstar via live chat whether you're permitted to short-check your bags to SIN. Likely will depend on the length of your layover/transit.

  • +1

Never had a problem doing this on SQ but they didn't let me check some to SIN and others through to destination

  • If the time between flights is 5 hours or more, no problem leaving Changi. 4 hours or less is a bit of a risk.
You will need to fill the immigration requirements.
Your booze will need to be in the carry-on, so you will probably lose it at Melbourne as over-limit. If you get it DF in Melbourne, you should be OK.

  • +1

…but how are you going to give it to your mate? You'll be in a "international transit" area, he'll be in the common area. You'd have to go through immigration, twice.

    • He lives near the airport so we can meetup in the airport. I havent been for singapore since covid, last time it took quite fast to pass through immigration and collected luggage (45mins) i think?

Getting into immigration was also quick

      • Must be a good mate to go through that hassle.

  • -1

Apparently liquids that are frozen at the time will be allowed through.

So, get a pretty cold freezer and a really good cooler.

    • A pretty bloody cold freezer. Depending on the alcohol content, you’ll need like -20°C to freeze anything 40% or higher.

  • I don't think so

  • I am pretty sure Singapore Changi airport has a rule where you can’t clear immigration unless you have a specific amount of hours before your next flight . I needed to go out once to post something as the post office inside the airport was closed but they wouldn’t let me out. Maybe with all the digital gates this may not be an issue now, but it’s worth checking.

Immigration doesn't care if you miss your connecting flight, as long as you hold a passport that qualifies you to enter as a visitor (Australian passport holders get 90 days by default) rather than a transit passenger.

OP - this your first time travelling is it?

  • This sounds dodgy…

    • -2

      Agree…

  • +2

All this effort for a bottle of alcohol? Unless it’s a really expensive or special vintage, better off buying it duty-free.

  • We've taken out our luggage with Qantas by speaking to their customer service desk, but in that situation we had a 12 hour layover.

If it's 4 hours you may not be given the option, it probably took 1-2 hours to get the bags to us, I'm single Singapore would be more efficient but still too short probably

    • +1

In Changi your luggage is often waiting for you on the belt before you even get to it.

  • Let me know how you go.

Google suggests it's up to the gate agent

With Jetstar I say 0% chance

  • What alcohol is it? Last time I went through Singapore (yes pre-covid so may all be different), the price of duty free booze at Singapore airport was cheaper than in Australia (both duty free/normal stores).

  • +2

This is usually done at the the check in counter.

You normally only ask for the bags to be checked to the airport you want to access your luggage at, telling them you need to access your luggage at that location.

I have done it before on SQ, QF, and CX, but never on Jetstar. Need to contact their customer service to be sure they allow it.

Since we are talking Jetstar, I would not count on an on-time arrival in your maths, and if the plane is quite late, your luggage will still be off loaded, leaving you stuck.

Changi is not a small airport, and it can take some time just to get between gates/terminals, add luggage collection, customs/immigration out and in, and check in, your 4 hours will disappear very quickly likely leaving you stressed.

Is it really worth the risk of not making your connecting flight?

  • +2

I have done it before on SQ, CI and BR. no problem at all, however, never tried Jetstar.

If you can, just check the alcohol separately in a cardboard box with loads of padding. Only check that to KL and have the rest of the bags checked to your final destination.

  • What alcohol is it that is worth so much effort? Your mate can buy most products in Singapore, albeit a slightly higher price.

  • -1

That wanna be an awesome bottle to be worth that much time and effort to endure immigration twice, baggage collection etc. Hope you hqve at least 5-6 hours between flights though as i doubt they will even allow it with just 4 hours

    • -1

Of course they would allow it.

    • +2

If you’ve never been through Changi before you might be amazed at how efficient it is. You can be off the aircraft, through immigration, have your bags and be out at the kerb within half an hour generally.

      • -1

been through there many times, while it can be fast it can also be very slow if you happen to arrive with a lot of other flights and since he is on Jetstar you also have to assume there is around a 1 in 3 chance of being late.

      • Yep, this was the case! Love how efficient they are.

Note: in immigration form, it has option for “transit”.

  • It has to be some good alcohol! My guess you need to book with 2 different flights..i coild be wrong
