        Shake My Significant Female?
I don't understand what you youngsters are getting up to these days!

  • There is never anything available in Melbourne.

    • +2

Melbourne usually has the best availability of all states, just not for this particular set.

NT, WA, TAS have it way worse.

      • theyre all over the place in Syd…

  • Just looked up my old pirates set from childhood… wowsers. We sold that shit in garage sales for peanuts and it's "value" is like 15-20k… I assume that's still sealed in the box though?

    • I would say that's almost certainly Brand New In Box, Sealed and Complete,
with a chest genuine 17th Century pirate treasure too.

Does Lego have any value if used but still with box and instructions? Other than by the kg?

Are these the thing you buy and stick in the cupboard for 30 years unopened and hope they go up in value?

    • +3

      Yes. Check value by bricklink.

      Brickeconomy is total bogus.

No, you still need to know what sets are worthwhile. And just because something is "valuable" doesn't mean anyone wants to buy it.

      • Probably 90% of the sets that are sold "complete" on Facebook marketplace or Gumtree are actually missing pieces.

I'm only willing to pay Bricklink prices from a Bricklink seller with decent sales history and good feedback.

If you're selling on Facebook marketplace or Gumtree, I'll usually offer up to half the lowest Bricklink price, because I know I'm probably going to have to spend a bunch of time and money ordering any missing pieces from Bricklink and BrickOwl.

I get what you're saying but you're way too much of a cheap ass. I check properly, I wouldn't even respond to your offer

          • @justtoreply: Not cheap, just factoring in the value of my time and the cost of sourcing the probable missing parts.

Sellers are a dime a dozen, if you don't entertain the offer someone else will, and if I want the set in a hurry I'll buy it off Bricklink instead since I know what I'm getting and have recourse if the set wasn't as described.

    • Not really. If you're lucky you might recoup the RRP plus a little more in line with inflation, but it's far from a certainty.
Unopened has more chance but it depends which set, I'm not convinced eithe of these sets are desirable enough. Like the latest Jurassic World sets, most of them seem like overpriced and under-designed in the first place.

  • I guess buying it on set retirement at 50% off could offset some of the loss of it doesn't increase in value, just got to store the damned stuff somewhere dry and undisturbed! And find a buyer when you need to sell! Some of those sets estimated value on brick economy though, they can't be real?! It's Lego!

      Brickeconomy is unreliable.

Also investing in sets isn't nearly as profitable as it was during the Lego Movie and Covid eras. Most modulars are losing value at the moment.

Also storing sets is pretty risky, it's value can go to zero from a burglary, or water leak, or being stored somewhere too humid (mold) or hot (lego starts losing it's shape around 50C).

  • Thanks, OP. Got the Lost Tomb

  • I’m in WA and just bought a set. I come to Melbourne frequently so if someone in Melbourne desperately wants one, PM me.

  • Cheers op

  • Went to a few Kmart stores today. They have those stupid security stickers on most of the boxes. Absolute aids for resell value. Managed to find a few of each with no stickers.

    • How much do value decrease because of the security sticker?

      • Depends on the location really. Front or back of the box is a big no no for collectors. If it's on the side, it's not too bad.

If you have the time to put in the effort, you can remove them with a hair dryer, tea tree oil and alcohol wipes.

But its an easy 50% reduction in value with a badly placed sticker.

Pity they don't have 77015 Temple of the Golden Idol - that was the only good set in the new Indiana Jones range.

Reportedly there was supposed to be a Temple of Doom set that looked good, but Lego withdrew it at the last minute.
