Australia Post: Last Chance To Order Before 20-25% Price Rise: Prepaid Envelopes or Domestic Letter with Tracking Envelopes

270

Australia Post is putting up their letter pricing tomorrow. The basic stamp goes up from $1.20 to $1.50. There is no use on stocking up on stamps, as from tomorrow, you would need to use more stamps.

But you can stack up on prepaid envelopes - either normal prepaid envelopes, or the green domestic letter with tracking envelopes. Both these types of envelopes are going up 20-25% tomorrow. They don't expire.

You can buy on the Australia Post website or through their eBay (Topcashback has 3% cashback).

More expensive to post something a few street over than it is to have something small shipped from china using AliExpress.

Blame the IPU, it’s not Auspost’s doing.

      • +5

I'm sure Australia Post deliberately delays letters.

7 days to deliver a priority letter vs overnight for any parcel

        • +1

You know how you paid for your letter to be delivered on the next plane?

          Ain't always sent by plane….

          • @TiredKitty78: Had to send letters to a school campsite PO BOX - it is less than 200km away.

100% of letters with a stamp and priority stamp took 1 week to be delivered.
Anything in an express parcel arrived overnight.

            • @prodrome: Either way….
Look at it this way. You could put it on a plane…
Or you could put it in whatever other vehicle frequently travels to and from the area….frequently through the night….

Trucks. Dude. Trucks. Sometimes your 'overnights' go on a truck that's already headed that way….

Sure. Watches are not cheap and guess what, we have one of the most expensive CEO to feed

To expand on what mskeggs mentioned, this is because China exploits an international agreement about how countries of differing development levels compensate each other for postage.

iirc, we (at the national level) subsidise China-based sellers to send stuff here. It's just the the individual buyer in Oz doesn't see this on their order.

This has been a long running point of contention between China and western nations, but it's not really changed much in decades.

B4, the paper size? I don't get how that's involved here.

    • -1

I just changed the B4 abbreviation in the title to Before to keep you happy :)

      • Hope he’s happy now

Australia post is a joke its a disgrace & now they want to charge more hopeless.

Imagine if Aust post pricing was related to service standards, productivity or customer satisfaction.

    • +3

      It is. Negatively

    • Lol

Maybe this is why ebay didn't activate their "50% off Australia Post Promo" this month? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/838618

  • I'm 14 and what is this?

    • +3

Its paper bags called envelopes where you put small things in and give them to slow people to physically deliver them slowly to whoever you want to send it to. For the privilege of this slow service, it costs a lot of money, 25% more tomorrow, as a bonus there's a reasonable chance your items will get lost (stolen).

Its like, emails, fr fr, but like with like trees, no cap.

They need some way to fund rolex watch gifts for the executive team.

  • Any trustworthy ebay sellers selling these prepaid labels cheaper than Australia Post? I remember someone posted a deal a year or two ago and it seemed legit.

  • +1

Whoops my 8yo sent a pen pal a letter today with a 60c stamp which i felt was overpriced. Wonder where it will end up?

  • Secret, there is a grace period to continue using the old price on mail and it will still get delivered

    • Grace period has been years already.
Only recently ran out of the old marked 1kg (now Medium) ones, and still have over 100 of the old 3kg (now Large) ones.

  • +3

The price rise is that big? Whoa. The f***.

  • Express remains the same?

Will there garbage delivery improve 25%? Or will it continue to take a week or more to go from Western Sydney to Southern Sydney

  • +2

AP is pure garbage but this is an informative heads up RE purchasing prepaid envelopes. Thanks OP

And yet my lazy monopolistic franchise LPO that I have no choice having my parcels sent to when the Parcel Locker is full will continue to only operate Monday - Friday.

I actually think Australia Post has made some good progress modernising since the start of the pandemic, they just need to rid themselves of the dinosaur franchisees.

What’s wrong with the aliexpress items they sell in store for 10000% mark up?

    • +6

It should be mandatory for all post offices to open a minimum of three hours on Saturday morning. Or at least not allow drivers to return packages to a store that isn't open on Saturday.

      • 100%.

      • -3

Maybe you should volunteer to work your Saturday there?

The small business owners deserve a break as well.

It's likely not profitable for them to pay someone for a minimum of 4 hours at weekend rates.

        • +1

Maybe you should volunteer to work your Saturday there?

I didn't choose to run an essential service like those who choose to operate a Post Office did.

The small business owners deserve a break as well.

And? They can hire staff if they don't want to work. Just like any other small business would have to do.

It's likely not profitable for them to pay someone for a minimum of 4 hours at weekend rates.

Not my problem. If franchise LPO are no longer practical in the modern world, then all the contracts should be torn up and replaced with Australia Post operated post offices.

Government owned services like the post shouldn't be run with profits as the priority. It should be about providing a service to tax payers (and minimising losses if possible).

        • Paintoad expressed it clearly enough.

Maybe they could use that extra 20% price rise to pay some staff for 4 hours on a Saturday.

Or the drivers could spend 10 minutes every day going back to a post office that operates on a Saturday.

          Not hard.

Maybe I'm just lucky I have a good local driver but I've found a massive improvement in AusPost in the last 1-3 years when receiving deliveries. The app works well and I'm never waiting more than a few days if it's on the east coast.

I also understand the bar is set extremely low when comparing to the likes of Couriers please and Aramex

    • Really a roll of the device as to who you get on which legs.

I've had my fair share of posties who lie about knocking on the front door.

    • +1

I've seen an improvement too. Living in Perth it's a fact that it takes forever for stuff to come from the east coast, but my local drivers are doing better and they sorted out the Welshpool distribution centre, which used to be Perth's verison of the Chullora black hole.

Just bit the bullet and purchased a heap more Small (500g) satchels for $9.74ea, and a few Medium (1kg) at $12ea. (Before everyone else puts them up too!)
Last time I got these they cost me approx. $8ea and $10ea.
And what's really funny / not funny… I've got a decent quantity of the old 3kg ones (now Large) that I paid less than $10ea.

+ing this just for the heads up from OP. (But really want to - it due to AP's multiple recent price rises.)

    • Satchels aren’t having a price rise. Parcels have price rises at different times to letters.

  • Better investment than btc

    • True. I could have made 10% ROI overnight!

  • 2 weeks and still waiting on my Sydney metro to Melbourne metro parcel delivery. These clowns are an absolute joke and they have the nerve to increase prices for their abysmal service?

    • +1

Sydney Metro is not opened yet.
You have to wait a bit longer. ;)

You can still post letters with $1.2 Stamps, they will go as usual for few months.

    • where does it say that

      • -1
      • +1

Asked Australia Post guy in post office. The overall summary of discussion was that no one is going to bother to return your letter instead of delivering for 30 or 60 cents for few months. Not each and everyone in Australia is updated that prices are increased, so there will be a benefit of doubt for few months. Moreover, they will give sometime to let $1.2 stamps finish that people may have stocked/bought previously.

You can post a letter to yourself and lets see if it goes through ;)

  • bought a few green C4 today, surprised to see 25% price up!
