Where Can I Find ACCURATE 0.01g Pocket Scales?

I have just come from the vet and one of my small dogs has arthritis. She has given me 100mg Neurontin(Gabapentin) capsules and a couple of syringes. To give the dog the daily 50mg dose I have to give empty the 100mg capsule into 1ml of water in a syringe and give the dog 1/2ml from the syringe.

Rather than doing this I was thinking about getting some micro pocket scales, weighing out 50mg of the capsule and adding it straight into the dog's food.

I have read that the micro pocket scales for sale in places like eBay are pretty inaccurate even though some advertise being able to measure down to 0.01g.

Can anybody recommend a place where I can get ACCURATE pocket scales that can accurately measure the 50mg weight?

By the way, I looked into getting a compound pharmacist to make me 50mg Gabapentin tablets but the cost ranged from $80-$100. A month supply of 100mg Gabapentin capsules is only $10.

I would have thought the answer was obvious…

      In someone's pocket

Have you looked on Amazon? $25 from a quick search.

I wouldn't worry too much about accuracy anyway. You are only trying to roughly divide the contents of each capsule into two. You could do this reasonably well just by sight. But if you are determined on being more accurate that the scales would be able to tell you if the two small piles were the same. The scales don't need to be accurate, jusy repeatable.

You are only trying to roughly divide the contents of each capsule into two.

You realise that the contents are likely not evenly distributed inside capsules.

      • nah mate, the pharmaceutical industry is trying to trick you into believing that but they're such a tight arse that they won't spend money on such assembly line capable of doing that. And if it's for dog then 100 times less likely.

otherwise, pill cutter to cut a 100mg tablet in half?

    • +1

it's a capsule, not a tablet, so a pill cutter will not work in this scenario

Why do they have to be pocket scales?

Are you planning on walking around with pills/product in your pocket that need to be divided up into "points"?

To give the dog the daily 50mg dose I have to give empty the 100mg capsule into 1ml of water in a syringe and give the dog 1/2ml from the syringe.

Why would you not simply do this? Likely easier and without needing to go the expense of scales?

Don't be crazy, it makes way more sense to buy sketchy scales off Amazon to weigh out milligrams of dog medicine.

    • Call me crazy, but I propose squirting the 0.5ml onto the food. Even if it’s dry food, would they notice that amount?

Yeah that’s crazy, go with the drug dealer scales

    • +2

That can work but it depends on how long you have to use the medication once it's open. There are many meds for humans where once you have made it up with water, you have to use it all within a certain time frame.

I am one where I only take a half dose per day, but once it's made up, it all has to be used within 6 hours, so have to chuck the rest out.

One doctor I saw said it's almost impossible to know if the active ingredient is split equally in a powder, so better to make the whole dose up, as once it is completely dissolved, you're more likely to be getting the right dose.

    I googled gabapentin.

It doesn't say anything about it being used for arthritis. It says its an anticonvulsant used to treat seizures and neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain is where the pain is the result of nerve damage.

It can be used to ramp down the perception of pain, particularly chronic pain. It tends to have a calming effect, which can reduce anxiety or distress associated with pain therefore helpful in some people in breaking the pain cycle. Not sure about doggies, but it is used in a chronic pain setting outside of neuropathic pain in humans. Presumably the vet felt it was a worthwhile option or wouldn’t have prescribed it.

  • Just ask to borrow them from your drug dealer.

  • I use these ones for coffee and have found them pretty accurate - TIMEMORE Coffee Scale, Espresso Scale ,Weigh Digital Coffee Scale with Timer. About $40 on Amazon.

  • We are in the same position - but were told 10 ml water.

We just make it up and give half each day over his wet food. Very simple.

You do not have to be that accurate. You can even open the capsule and make 2 kinda equal piles. When we give people half an endone for pain you think we bring out a scale? We snap the tab in 2 and give it. Trust me, this is not a situation where you need pinpoint accuracy

    • I was going to say, unless this is for DMT, this is completely unnecessary

    “Gem scales”

  • You need scales of a determined precision rather than accurate. Look for your precision as a +/- in the specifications.

  • Gabapentin has a wide therapeutic index (toxic dose divided by therapeutic dose). Even if you accidentally gave your dog 100mg it's unlikely to have any noticeable effect.

    Better call Saul.

  • Ask the vet to do this for you.
    They have the equipment.

  • A square box that covers the scale while in operation will stop wind draft messing up your reading

  • So we did we actually find and answer to this?
Curious myself as a lot of my powders from nootropics depot require accurate measurement. Cheers

  • I had a dog and 2 cats on tiny doses of itraconazole. A 200mg capsule broken open has 220 granules in it, so every day the cats each had 12 granules and the dog had 148. They didn't mix with water very well but coating with a squirt of gravy from the wet cat food sachets meant they took it without a fuss.
