I think most who want to buy should already bought from the 616 deal, the rest are waiting for the pro. Lol

Nope, I'm waiting for the digital with an extra controller from JB to go on sale… 😑
It's ridiculous that disc went on sale everywhere but not digital

I bet the PS5 Pro won't release until very late this year or early 2025. And i wonder if there will be enough stock available. As in i bet the scalpers with their online bots buy up all the stock before any one else can get it. Just like how the original PS5 release was.

Once I finish Resident evil 4 and RDR2, selling my PS5 in anticipation of the PS5 Pro

Am i the only person that thinks they shouldn't release a pro model?

the first 3 generations of playstation consoles didn't include pro models and they were legendary. Sure they made revisions with slim consoles, but all of the consoles performed relatively the same.

The problem with releasing a pro model is it then makes it more difficult for developers and they have multiple performance levels of hardware that they need to design, configure, and support for. Whilst if they only had 1 level of performance to design their game for then they could spend more time focusing on that game working perfectly on that singular platform and performance level.

Also, it somewhat penalises fans that jumped on the system early and didn't get a pro version.

The problem with releasing a pro model is it then makes it more difficult for developers and they have multiple performance levels of hardware that they need to design, configure, and support for.

This is already the case on PS5 with multiple performance/graphics modes and pretty standard for anything releasing on PC. It's also something that will be relatively automated by PSSR (PlayStation's alleged DLSS/FSR alternative) which is one of the major differences. Not really a valid concern. It's less about designing games for the Pro vs using upscaling tech to improve performance on the Pro from what we've seen so far.

That aside, game optimisation in general is pretty terrible across the industry right now. Some additional brute power would help alleviate that for those that want it. Regular PS5s will not stop working just like PS4 didn't when the Pro was released.

      • That aside, game optimisation in general is pretty terrible across the industry right now. Some additional brute power would help alleviate that for those that want it. Regular PS5s will not stop working just like PS4 didn't when the Pro was released.

That's part of the problem, game optimization is terrible in the industry right now, and the fact that they have so many different systems and performance levels they need to optimise for is part of the reason why it's so terrible. The other problem here is, relying on brute power then leaves the people with the non-pro model having a bad experience, and usually those non-pro users were the biggest fans who bought the system when it first came out.

The reality is that they spend time in optimizing the game for consoles. Having a pro and non pro model means they need to split that optimization time between the two, whilst if they only had 1 model or performance level they could spend all that time optimizing for the one performance level.

        • the fact that they have so many different systems and performance levels they need to optimise for is part of the reason why it's so terrible.

I'm not sure that's a substantiated fact at all. The challenges with modern game engines (see any UE5 game performance), increased game scope and crunch times to rush things out the door are likely a far bigger factor. There's no evidence that having PS5-only performance level to tweak would improve things, because we already see PS5 games struggling and there's no Pro to blame it on right now. So nothing is going to change there. Once again, PSSR should make PS5 Pro upscaling easier, not more effort.

Being a "biggest fan" isn't relevant. Sony doesn't care about you or I. It's a business looking to make more and more money. People are buying $1,000+ graphics cards in absolute droves. They'll sell out Pro console guaranteed.

There are other bonuses a Pro can offer other than just framerate improvements including boosting PSVR2 performance, ray-tracing improvement, 8K support (yes, some people do want this), real depth enhancement, 14-bit colour, media upscaling plus whatever else they come up with.

Keep in mind PS5 is nearly 4-year old technology by now (equiv RTX 2070S and RDNA2).

      • it's also something that will be relatively automated by PSSR (PlayStation's alleged DLSS/FSR alternative) which is one of the major differences

This is just plain false, asking devs to support yet another AI upscaler which is only on 1 device is stupid and not probably be commonly used outside of 1st party.

        • The leaked PSSR help file made it clear that it uses pretrained graph parameters and no per title training is needed. There should not be a need for devs to support it manually nor update their games. Allegedly.

Similar to how current 8K devices can upscale all 4K content autonomously.

    • I'm waiting for the pro as I want a design that can just be placed horizontally. PS5 slim without a disk drive will not site horizontally at all. Want that PS3 look on the PS5

    • It's the Sony way. Release a dozen unnecessary consoles to make people think their version is outdated and needs an upgrade.

      • +1

RIP the people who "upgraded" to the slim model even though it was actually cheaper for Sony to make with no advantages to the customer.

      • Sony is the Apple of gaming, both fans of each company are act the same way too lol.

      • It's the Sony way

As opposed to Microsoft and Nintendo? Lol

Such a cute console, the original ps5 was pretty ugly

    • +7

I think this looks uglier than the original.

      • Both still ugly, I've seen all black ones that look better.

People holding out for the unannounced, no release date PS5 Pro that we have some leaked specs for lol. Launch price will be interesting considering the world we now live in and the fact that PS5 RRP is more expensive now that it was when it launched 3 1/2 years ago.

  • Remember the days when the slim version would be cheaper and a 4 year old console would no longer cost RRP? Modern day console gaming is depressing AF. Companies just ripping people off and you have to just accept it if you want in of their ecosystem. I bought a Xbox Series X in 2022 for $650 and they cost $100 MORE now. There is no way Sony and Microsoft aren't paying much less now to build these aging consoles.

Sure they'll release a PS5 Pro this year, but guess what, it'll cost like $1100(so they can sell it at $999 "on sale") and probably stay there till they announce the PS6 or whatever.

    • -2

The console hardware were always heavily subsidised when they launch. Now they are just not losing money anymore selling at this rrp price.

      • +1

Price gouging like the big grocery stores.

        • Like everyone, look at Repco and Supercheap.

      • GDDR6 prices alone have dropped significantly the past few years. At the start of 2022, 8gb of GDDR6 was like $120-140usd but by mid 2023 8gb cost only $27usd. Did we see any kind of price change with consoles? A big fat nope.

    • The XSX has always been $750. It did not go up in price. You probably purchased during a sale.

    To any retailers reading this.

Under $500 and ill make the jump

  • Are there any exclusive games that made you buy a PS5?

  • Seems crazy to me on the same year the Pro might ship.

I imagine the Pro might be $799 or so? $899 at most, you'd think the regular might be at $549 by now.

    Good for me though, I'm guessing re-sale value on a stock PS5 will be what, $390 - > $450?

    • +2

People expect the PS5 Pro to be $599 USD + taxes i.e. $650 USD.

So in Australia I reckon the Pro will be about $999 AUD including taxes. If we are very very lucky, the Pro will only be $899 AUD. But $999 AUD seems possible.

It’s basically impossible / massive wishful thinking that it would only be $799 AUD

      • Plus Sony has struggled to cut the costs on the current model and stay profitable, 4 years in and we've only had a price increase no actual cuts in price that were perm.

        • -1

Not just Sony, the whole industry. Manufacturing prices aren’t decreasing quickly anymore the way that they used to. The end of Moore’s Law and also the mess caused by COVID and inflation. And nobody wants to sell hardware at a loss anymore and make up for it with a cut of software sales.

      • You're assuming they aren't making a bit more money per console now, loss originally at launch.

I dunno look 899 or 999, feels like the regular could come down 50 by now

I guess inflation is making that more difficult too

$630 via Kogan eBay with the 12% eBay plus code ;)

    • That's a good price. You should post it.
