Google Photos AI Editing Magic to Become Free for All Users, Google One VPN Perk Discontinued

Just received an email from Elgoog about some changes to Google One memberships.

Hi Scrimshaw

Thank you for being a Google One member where you enjoy extra storage, family sharing, and more. We’re writing to let you know about some updates coming to your Google One subscription starting on ‌M‌a‌y‌ ‌1‌5‌. These changes are designed to streamline your benefits while ensuring you have a valuable subscription experience.

Key changes:

Expanding access to popular features: We’re making enhanced editing features like Magic Eraser and Portrait Light available to all Google Photos users with devices that meet the requirements starting on ‌M‌a‌y‌ ‌1‌5‌.¹ Dark web report will also be made available to all eligible Google Accounts in the coming months.²

Bringing Magic Editor to more users: Google Photos’ most advanced editing tool, Magic Editor, will become available to all Google Photos users starting in May, helping you to make complex edits in an intuitive way leveraging generative AI.³ You will get up to 10 monthly saves in Magic Editor to unlock your creativity. Phasing out two benefits: With a focus on providing the most in-demand features and benefits, we’re discontinuing free shipping for select print orders from Google Photos (in Canada, the UK, US, and EU) starting on ‌M‌a‌y‌ ‌1‌5‌ and VPN by Google One later this year.

The Google VPN service will still be available to Google Pixel users, so it's not as if it's going away completely. It is a rather useless / pointless VPN service though since you can't choose the server to connect to (I was not able to use it at all while I was in Singapore, for instance).

On a google photos related issue, it’s auto tagging people, but it’s tagged the wrong person

eg; in the group “Lebron James” it’s got a photo of “Michael Jordan”

Anyone know how to remove the tagging? I can’t see anything in the settings of the individual photo to remove the tagging

    • Weird, I can find it easily.

      1) In Google Photos, click into the photo
      2) Top right, click on 3 vertical dots
      3) Click on Edit faces
      4) Delete the wrong face
      5) Add correct face

      • That’s the thing, I don’t have “edit faces”

        • Strange. In all photos, or just the photos with the wrong tags?

  • Surprised no one has posted it as a bargain yet

  • The only issue with these features is having to give more info to Google. I mean don't get me wrong the technology is great when it works but sometimes the large windows can come in handy for throwing said technology out of. Not that I condone throwing speakers and other technology out of windows that are closed but its a nice thought sometimes.

These changes are designed to take features from your valuable subscription experience and make them freely available for everyone. Thank you for continuing to pay the same price for less features.
