Was hovering over the purchase button on the weekend, but didn't pull the trigger.

Is this game actaully any good?
Been looking for something interesting to play, it was either this or Bio Shock Infinite

    • +8

Both are awesome. I'd say this might give you slightly longer play time and more content.

      • +2

Slightly longer is an understatement. One is linear and the other is open world with much larger dlc maps and mods.

    • +4

The game is good, it’s a Bethesda RPG, so that gives you a style for the game. Some purists don’t like how much the dialogue system and your choices were streamlined.

I preferred it over Bioshock - I found the story good, but didn’t enjoy the gameplay.

    • +6

      This way better than bioshock

    • +3

I'm in the minority here but I preferred the story and the gameplay of Bioshock Infinite. It's linear but that's also something I liked about it.

Both are good games but probably better to get Fallout first since it seems to be more popular in general.

      • +4

I absolutely love Fallout, I was literally just playing a bit of Fallout New Vegas just now!

Having said that, Bioshock Infinite is such a great game I find it hard to say it's not better than any of the Fallout series game. Probably a bit too much of a mind f#@ for some in terms of the storyline but seriously amazing that they managed to create such a game and pull it off like they did!

        • +1

The weird storyline is what I liked most about Bioshock. The graphics with it's steampunk styling were also pretty spectacular when it came.

    • One of the best games you'll ever play! Hundreds of hours as definitely replayable with different storylines to follow.

    • +1

Great purchase, especially if you grab a mod collection which more than doubles the content. Not too difficult to do, I recommend Storywealth

    • Have you played any of the older Fallout titles? FO4 is definitely lacking when it comes to the RPG aspects that the older titles did so well (dialogue options amount to Yes, Yes but Sarcastically, More Info or No). That said, there's still plenty of fun to have if you view it as more of an Third Person Action game with light RPG elements.
You will likely get more playtime out of it that Bioshock too if you're not one that replays games often, as Bioshock is more linear and story focused.

    • Fallout 4? I mean as far as games go it's okay. It has the next gen update now. But it was also kind of ass if you spent hours trying to clear all the radiant quests before moving on. It kinda missed the point of a Fallout game. You're better off playing Fallout 1 and 2, it's ons sale too https://www.xbox.com/en-au/games/store/fallout/9n42ct1j5wgw https://www.xbox.com/en-AU/games/store/fallout-2/9P1JS86M9SX…

      • +2

That's only if your keen to play the old school isometric turn based versions of fallout

    • I have a lot of hours in FO4 and I think it's great. The crazy world and exploration are as good as it gets. The mechanics and combat are much improved over FO3/new vegas. The base building is addictive. Playing in survival mode is very immersive and adds to the experience greatly.

The main criticism is that the story/dialogue is a bit railroady and the voiced protagonist isn't really compatible with roleplaying as whatever character personality you want. Which is true but easily forgiven imo based on the amount of fun you can have anyway.

  • +5

Great game, but I gave it a download over the weekend and was reminded that Bethesda titles on PC are capped at 60FPS without mods.

    • +1

Gotta turn your monitor down to 60hz too or else it goes nuts. At least i had to

      • Or use software to limit the game to 60fps.

    • +3

      Its an engine limitation.
Uncapping it does weird things to the physics.

    • +2

      oh really, what about wolfenstien?

    • +2

For the benefit of all: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/44798

This mod unties the physics from framerate, along with a few other things. I've enjoyed playing the game well north of 100fps for a few years now.

      • +1

Basically, all Bethesda games were tied to a maximum framerate of 60 fps. You could override it in an ini, but odd things could happen. In the introductory cart ride in Skyrim, above 60 fps the cart veers off the path and tries going up a "mountain".

The best uncapper for Skyrim SE seems to be SSe Display Rweaks: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/34705
It is a script extender plugin rather than an esp and has a lot options you can tweak in an ini.

      • heyy, im new to gaming on PC, so how do i know what game requires what Mods to increase peformance, and where to find them? is there like a mod search ? or is it all about googling and reditting each game to come across a comment like yours ??.

        • +2

Mods aren't needed to enjoy the game, the vanilla (stock, no mods) experience is good already

Can your computer play the game at high FPS? Not much reason to get the high FPS physics fix mod if you're monitor is stuck at 60Hz.

          where to find them?

Use Nexus Mods, pretty much the de facto site for all things PC-game modding.

or is it all about googling and reditting each game to come across a comment like yours ??.

          wdym?

          • @CrispyChrispy: hey mate, im no PC expert but i just got these, would it be good for the Mod ? 4070ti/i712700F
            16gb ram

i mean like, how do i know what games have mods for it, or is it best to assume most games have mods and to just find them on " nexus mods " ? :)

            • @PerthMan96:

hey mate, im no PC expert but i just got these, would it be good for the Mod ? 4070ti/i712700F
              16gb ram

Yes, if you have a high refresh rate monitor then yes.

or is it best to assume most games have mods and to just find them on " nexus mods " ? :)

This. Keep in mind not all games require mods or need them. Some games only have 1 or 2 mods, some will have millions. You really only 'need' mods if you want them or see a need for them.

  • +15

Also worth reminding everyone that Fallout 76 is currently free in the Microsoft Store.

    • +7

      Also free from prime gaming

    • +6

Reminding everyone that this video exists https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjyeCdd-dl8

      • +2

Fallout 76 has 16 times the detail of Fallout 4.

      • +1

        that videos gold

      • +2

4 years ago? they've done so many updates since that video.

        • +2

Bethesda deserve to be raked over the coals for the release of FO76. It wasn't ready and they continually tried to rip off customers.

Closest comparison would be No Man's Sky but the reason that launch failed is because of inexperience and runaway hype. Bethesda were just plain greedy.

      • +1

I like this video the most. I always come back to it every few months. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFcLyDb6niA

Todd and his sweet little lies.

Light wood laminate! Light wood laminate!

    • +2

      Link?

  • +13

Also remember that the Next Gen patch is released on the 25/04

    • +2

Is that a paid upgrade, a separate game, or what?

      • +2

        free :)

        • But I gather consoles only, not PC, so not much point. I played it once on Console, I'd never play a game like that with a controller again.

      • +1

It's not Sony so it's free, just an update to the exisiting game

        • Why would Sony have anything to do with it?

          • @CascadeHush: Sony generally charge for next gen updates of their games is their point. Microsoft rarely, if ever charge for it.

            • @ONEMariachi: That is the advantage of being the console market leader, dont think Microsoft wouldn't do the same if the shoe was on the other foot.

    • Hoping they fix a lot, should be running better than it is on modern hardware

  • +4

All the Fallout games are on Game Pass…except F4 GOTY Edition.

  • +8

Couple of bucks cheaper on Green man gaming (if you don't have base game already)
    https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/fallout-4-goty-edition-…

    • +1

I bought it on gmg, why not to save a few dollars - used to not be able to rebuy the goty on steam if you had the base - at least that was case with tekken 7. But if you get it on steam and only have the base it just confirms you won’t get an extra key and will let you buy anyway

Also to be fair, if you buy it on steam you get a no fuss refund route too if the game ain’t for you

    • OOS :(

  • is there a deal for just the DLCs if I own the base game?

  • +6

    Same price on GOG!

  • +15

Every time with fallout and Skyrim:

Ok this is going to be a full legit play through no cheats or mods

Ok… damn I’ll just increase max weight carry by a few kg. Oh damn I’m short caps.. I’ll just add 20k. Ah damn I really need more skill I’ll just increase lockpick by 20 points.

…. Aaandddd I’ve ruined the game

    • +5

      I did that with Stardew….

I think inventory is the big pain in the ass. It's single player so do what you what for QoL improvements.

      • +4

The last time I restarted Skyrim for the millionth time , I found a random inventory mod that added a search function, damn so handy for a hoarder like myself.

        • QoL stuff like that is why I can't imagine playing elden ring. inventory / learning mechanics looks like a nightmare

  • $12.36 at Fanatical

  • +3

Nice on sale during the show release, watched the first two episodes and it seems good

    • +4

I'm 7 episodes in and it's great. Nice to see more good video game adaptions.

      • +3

And book adaptations like Shogun and Three Body Problem. Leave it to creatives to create original story leave Hollywood to rip off their stories.

        • +4

It's not hard. Honour the source material and leave the meddling execs out of it.

          • @Caped Baldy: So you haven't watched the Three Body problem then? :)

Am enjoying Shogun a lot though.

  • +4

Do yourself a favour and get Fallout 3 or New Vegas instead.

Fallout 4 was a victim of the start of the looter crafting games boom and bears little resemblance to the "Fallout" universe.

    • +8

While I agree that new Vegas is superior, fo4 does have its moments and for a present day audience yet to experience fallout is the better way to ease into it imo

If it was up to me I’d recommend starting from 1 (actually my fav then new Vegas)

      • +1

I just learned I can play FO1 and FO2 on my android phone so I'll get that working soon.

        • +1

I guess back in the day I was probably running it at like 800x600 or similar … so yeah maybe it would translate ok to phone.

I thought fo2 was the weakest of the series btw

    • +1

I sunk a fair bit of time into FO4 but never played NV or 3, I've been diving down a rabbit hole the over the weekend researching The Tale Of Two Wastelands, from what I gather essentially slotting FO3 into the NV engine or something similar and combining both games?

Do I want to let it reel me in?

      • Nv has the best radio soundtrack imo

        • +1

          You've sold me!

      • +1

NV is much better than 3 or 4.

      • Do it. And yes, TTW combines 3 and NV in the NV engine, as well as fixing thousands of bugs and issues. You start the game at the start of 3, and can get a train to take you to NV. You can then start the NV quests but retain the level and skills your character is already at. You can then ride the train back and forth between DC and NV as much as you like, as long as you can afford it.

        • Thanks for that mate. Just found I own a copy of Fallout 3 on Epic already so can apparently use that and just gotta pick up a copy of NV on GOG and good to go!

    • +4

NV has it's moments but it is very rough around the edges for me. Despite the terrible writing I still vastly prefer FO4 because the sense of exploration and overall tone is just perfect imo.

Not a popular opinion I know, but I think the fact that these games continue to sell extremely well is a good affirmation of their overall appeal.

      • If you played fallout 4, then new Vegas, yeah. Definitely a few steps back. I mean there are overhaul mods but I just cbf these days and prefer the OG experience (I also mainly play either streaming on games pass or on steam deck)

        • Nah I played (mostly) everything in order of release. Skyrim, FO 3, FO NV, FO4, 76, and most recently Starfield.
I have been meaning to come back to NV to see if my opinion has changed since it's been nearly a decade since i've played it, I just remember a lot of redundant level design that really bothered me back in the day. Eg. The vault tunnel mazes, the needlessly long BOS bunker, endless stretches of desert with absoutly no content or interesting navigation challenges etc.

I know some people really like these elements of NV, but I just couldn't stand them. Willing to give it a second chance once I find time to play it again.

    • +2

I've played every Fallout and would recommend people play 4. NV is arguably the best of the 3D fallouts but super outdated and janky, being Oblivion era.

F4 is a much better Fallout game than people give it credit for, with the worst parts being at the start with the Minutemen and the town of Concord, and having some other real issues which don't ruin it. Once you get past there, and know to ignore the Minutemen radiant quests, the game picks up a lot.

  • +4

    Better game than Starfield IMO

    • +1

      Agreed

    • +2

      Sarah Morgan disliked that.

    • +1

Yep. I love to play devils advocate for Bethesda but this game just wasn't doing it for me

    • In art style maybe. Fallout 4 is all style and no substance. The graphics were fine imo, the game behind it is ass. Starfield is better than Fallout 4.

  • Hey guys, anyone else have the base game on Steam and not getting the discount for the DLC upgrade? It's still showing full $13.73 for me.

  • Just in time to go with the Prime TV show!

  • Only bought this last night…. I loaded the Welcome to Paradise mod list via Wabbajack app. The game looks a hell of a lot better, quality of life improvements and bug fixes. While staying faithful to the original game.

  • I heard this will be free on the epic store soon. Not sure if that's true.

  • Is any of the dlc worth playing? I’ve got the vanilla version in my library.

    • Far Harbour was great.

  • Showing my age here…but the series definitely peaked at #2 for me

    • +1

I have a recollection of fo2 and tactics having a pretty high difficulty curve.

      Fo2 much earlier in game.

Tactics was kind of 2/3rds in when you started going against robots, and the difficulty really spiked. Like practically every second turn had to hit the super stims.

But 1, new Vegas, 3 and 4 was a lot more gradual

  • +4

I picked up Fallout 4 (GOTY ed) on Fanatical two weeks ago for $12.36 (saving $1.37) but paid $8.68 for Fallout 3 (GOTY ed) while Steam are currently charging $7.48 (loss of $1.20). End result is I'm up $0.17… yay!

  • +1

I always thought FO4 was a terrible game compared to FO3 and all its DLC.

  • +1

I spent well over 500+ hours in both Fallout 3 and Oblivion. But Skyrim and Fallout 4 just didn't hook me the same way. Idk what changed. I think I am a sucker for the jankyness.

  • No idea about the game but loved the show on Amazon Prime. Wondering if it's worth playing.

    • +1

It is. Plus it’s like $13 and isn’t that crazy demanding spec wise

    • +1

The show kept the spirit of the game. It was exciting seeing those little details on the screen. The show does feel like it was made by someone who actually played and loved the games. The history of video game interpretations has been a bit patchy, so I'm pleasantly surprised with how good the show was.

As for the game, if you like roleplaying games, I think you'd have fun with it. Fallout 4 and Fallout New Vegas.

    • i legit bought the game because of the show too. haven't really gotten into any of the fallout games so this will be my first foray.
it was going for less on GMG but think it's out of stock now.

  • +2

    Fanatical have the whole bundle here - https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/fallout-bundle A$42.05 A$199.75 -79%

  • Will this run on an ok modern laptop without a dedicated graphics card? Ryzen 7 5826U Radeon Graphics 2000 Mhz 8 core…. whatever that means.

    • +2

Yes. Pretty sure that's what mine has and it plays fine with the HD graphics
