  • how long is the expected battery life? want something good for light gaming but also productivity for work remotely

    • I have the exact laptop, productivity you will get about 5-6hr

About 1 to 1.5 hour for games for example Stray.

I hate this laptop keyboard, I also have the Acer Swift Go and the keyboard is better on that one.

      • If you turn off the RTX3050 and use the integrated graphics 780M, do you get longer battery life for productivity usage, and if so, how much longer?

        • It shouldn't be drawing power if you are not gaming. I wouldn't reliably expect more than 6hr battery life on a windows laptop.

    • I haven't tried on eco mode but on the normal mode the battery drains at a fair rate.

It seems to get better over time though. Not sure if there's some learning happening in the background on when and when not to trigger the 3050.

A 65w usb pd will barely charge it under dynamic leads (ie. It'll be using the battery as a buffer). 100w/140w is preferable.

      • so get a 100w type c to c csble they exist yeah…

  • how well is this combo of 780M + 3050 gaming performance?

    • +4

780M won't be used in games at the same time as the RTX 3050. The 3050 GPU is slightly more powerful than the XBox Series S GPU.

You can judge for yourself roughly how well it will perform:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ASVV1fCcgA

      • Those iGPUs are severely hamstrung by that 4800mhz RAM.

This test compares with 6400mhz which this laptop comes with, though it's 32gb instead of 16gb so it'll be slightly better. There's still quite a difference but a non-3050 laptop might be good enough if you don't really need a dGPU. Also consider finding a 32gb RAM laptop.

  • Is this better or worse than the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9 that was posted a couple days ago?

  • Really nice laptop, been super happy with mine (previous gen). Build quality much higher than expected.

Note for this one, 3050 only roughly 50% faster than 3050 for gaming. If you're only a casual gamer, or only play eSports titles, might be better off with the model with no dedicated GPU.

    • +1

Oops just noticed my error. Should say 3050 is only 50% faster than 780m

    • 50% is the best case scenario too. Commonly only 10-20% faster which at 30-40fps is almost indistinguishable.

  • +2

I was told R780M is great then why does it need 3050. Won't be great for battery life.

    • Like with all laptops with dgpu nowadays, it only turns on when it thinks it needs it.

Yes it will suck more power then without, or you could simply disable the dgpu.

    • +2

Also forgot to add dgpus, even the rtx3050, is still in a completely different league to igpus.

For gaming it could be the difference of just playable and enjoyable.

For productivity, depending on the program you'll have benefit of things like CUDA.

Do your research. Some people might benefit more from the 32gb ram over a dgpu.

      • For productivity there could be real benefits. I doubt gaming is in another league though, the 780m is extremely capable for an igpu

        • +1

Yes it is extremely capable but from what I've briefly seen on youtube, it's the difference between under 30fps and over 30fps (ie. tolerable vs enjoyable experience) in a few games.
In some cases the 3050 almost doubles the fps of the 780m.

Realistically the 780m is very close to low end dGPU performance, but not quite there yet.
Some people are saying it's roughly a 1050ti, which is quite impressive.

I can test a game or two if you want (and if it's in one of my libraries).

    • I have a laptop with the R680M.
Whilst it is great for gaming, it does mean a big chunk of your RAM is gone, serving as VRAM for the iGPU.
So another benefit is getting full access to all of your onboard RAM.

  • For this price and an older generation 3050? Why….

Actually i guess OLED might make it worth it.

  • Just ordered an IdeaPad5 pro two days ago without 13% ShopBack T.T
Worth cancelling and reordering with ShopBack?

  • Been eyeing a new laptop for a while and was looking at a Legion Slim 14 but this deal seems pretty good and cheaper, albeit a weaker GPU.

I don't game that hard on the laptop but would like to future proof myself. What are people thoughts on this laptop - people who have used it?

    • Depends how far ahead you're looking for future proofing.

16gb ram is a major let down (although I haven't needed anything more, yet…)
Battery seems to also get chewed through at a decent pace. Best to carry a 100w usb pd adapter with you (minimum 65w)

Some pet peeves of mine: Lack of touchscreen (especially for Windows 11), M.2 SSD replacements limited to 2242 (or 2230 with adapter) sizes due to poor heatpipe placement.

I was also getting a lot of stuttering before, but I've formatted it and messed with it a bunch since then and I haven't been getting it now.
Not sure what the issue was.

      • What use case do you have for the touchscreen?

I have the Yoga gen 7 convertible and it's sometimes cool for drawing diagrams but I wish I used it more often to justify it. That gen had terrible BSODs though, so hopefully they've fixed that for the newer versions.

  • With the 780M being fairly close to a 3050 in performance, it's a pretty pointless combo. Only advantage is dedicated GDDR6 and CUDA (and RTX I guess?).

  • +1

I need a new laptop for personal home use. I've no idea what to buy and would LOVE some recommendations if anyone has time.

I'll be using it for lots of web surfing, watching videos, emails and Microsoft word. No gaming.

My biggest priorities are screen size (minimum 14" screen); speed; capacity to have lots of tabs open at once (I'm notorious for it!); and long battery life. I'd also prefer a light weight laptop the at doesn't run too hot or loud if used on my lap on the couch. My budget is somewhat flexible - I'm thinking up to $1750 (does that sound about right?).

Should I buy this Lenovo? Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!

  • I had an issue with this model after warranty expired. The screen developed black areas so I can only be used with an external monitor. Probably is the cable connecting the MB and the the screen, but the hassle and price of a repair forces a replacement. So expect to get 3 years from this laptop.

Can anyone confirm shopback will work with this specific deal?

Shopback states "Vouchers or Promo codes not featured on ShopBack
Any exceptions will be at the store's discretion"

There is a discount category with up to 55% off idea pad range which sounds like this deal but can mean anything.

Or is it going to work if the shopback button is green on the page?

I haven't used shopback before, reviews don't look great, does anyone have any experience with shopback on lenovo products?

    Thanks

    • Yes, I purchased this , shopback tracked the transaction($208.43 of CB) , updated the account in 24hrs.

  • The cash back for thinkpad range, this laptop is ideapad, can anyone confirm who bought this ideapad get confirmation from ShopBack? Thanks

    • Got the cash back track

  • does this come with a mux switch? concerned about battery life the a dgpu

    • it does not, but a mux switch serves to deactivate the iGPU. This will have the iGPU enabled all the time, so you should still get good battery life.

A reminder that this deal still exists.

    Pros:
    -Better GPU
    -Cheaper

    Cons:
    -Worse CPU
    -Smaller SSD
-IPS 60Hz (may be an upgrade for some as that means no burn in and clearer text)

  • That's 16gb RAM soldered Dual-channel meaning 2x8gb are BOTH soldered?

    • I asked sales support. It's 1 stick of 16gb. So why does it say dual channel?

      • +1

That's 16gb RAM soldered Dual-channel meaning 2x8gb are BOTH soldered?
I asked sales support. It's 1 stick of 16gb. So why does it say dual channel?

You and the sales rep are both confused

There are no "sticks" for soldered RAM - they are individual memory packages soldered alongside each other onto the motherboard similar to this

In this case, 16GB is 4x4GB modules with 2x4GB modules per channel

Read the full specs for yourself here

        Memory
        Max Memory

        16GB soldered memory, not upgradable

        32GB soldered memory, not upgradable
        Memory Slots

Memory soldered to systemboard, no slots, dual-channel

        Memory Type

        LPDDR5x-6400

        • NO slots!? OMG, that's terrible. Thank you for explaining all that. I thought I could at least insert another 16GB. Now it makes sense why they didn't even offer a 32gb upgrade in the customization section.

  • Is the cashback gone?

  • would this be good as a work laptop or should I look at something else?
