Decent deal if you’re looking for an adapter - around $6 less than others similar adapters on Amazon.

I have this one myself and it can do 1440 @ 144hz and I don’t see any issues. Has a metal body which is a nice though aswell.

Why not just get a DP to HDMI cable ?

    • +9

If you've already got a nice HDMI cable and only need to add the active conversion chip? The active DP to HDMI cables aren't that cheap. Passive cables are just wires and insulation - perfect for lower resolutions and refresh rates or non-proprietary signal standards.

      • thanks

Good for people who travel cause you can save space and weight with one cable and a bunch of adaptors. Otherwise I agree.

dp++ ports can output to HDMI through just a passive cable. The port can detect there's a HDMI device connected to it and switch its output to suit it.

dp ports can't. The signalling on the wire is different. You need to have an active DP to HDMI converter.

I bought one of these on Friday and it arrived today. Worked well. No complaints.

    • Does it let you get into the BIOS screen? I found that while the active ones are good, some of them don't work with slightly odd resolutions, such as BIOS.

      • No idea. Just used it to plug an old TV into a Dell optiplex running Xubuntu and it just worked.

      • I had to unplug these to access bios via the dedicated GPU hdmi port.

I bought similar ones from AliExpress at a recent deal for USD $1.49 each

Mine stopped working after a month

      Ctrl-Alt-Del ???

  • Can you plug these directly into a GPU?

    • Yes

    • I have two in a 4070 but they are slightly too big to be side by side, had to leave an empty port between them.

  • Thanks!
Purchased hopefully this will give my 57000XT 4k 10Bit 120hz VRR
As HDMI is limited to 1.4b and only does 4k 8Bit 120hz no VRR on my TV

    • Signal is still being sent as HDMI….

Thanks understand, typo I should have put HDMI 2.0B 18 Gbps is the HDMI ports limit on this model gpu.
Where as it's display ports are 32.40 Gbps, hoping this active display port will output HDMI to achieve 2.1b that my TV supports in.

I searched up active DP on my work computer and now I have a meeting with HR.

  • From the description:

NOTE: It supports 4K@60hz at 8 bit color depth. At 10 bit color depth, it only supports 4K@30hz.

Are there any adapter's that can handle 4k@60hz with 10 bit color depth?

    • I wish sellers would be specific about the specifications supported, and not just give resolutions..

    • I just went with the 8K version (4K@120Hz and 8K@60Hz support / DisplayPort to HDMI 2.1) in that situation for the same reason (4K/60Hz dongles can often mean SDR only). For example:

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Cable-Matters-102101-BLK-Computer-…

Active adapters, you do need to check the specs. Also, they could have issues showing the BIOS screen (because quite a lot of PC's BIOS resolutions are a bit odd). Furthermore, your DisplayPort needs to support 4K HDR 10-bit, otherwise, just because the active adapter is capable, if the source isn't good enough, you still won't get 4K HDR 10-bit.

      • FYI… there is a firmware update to that Cable Matters adapter to resolve a few issues with Dell monitors & VMM7100 4Lane HBR3 Products.

        https://kb.cablematters.com/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=160

It might cost a lot more but have to say I'd rather buy this than the cheap Amazon stuff as Cable Matters is actively reviewing & fixing problems with their cables/adapters…

        • The concept of flashing a firmware via the video output of your machine … is bonkers 😁

  • I wonder why combo HDMI/DisplayPort ports never took off…

    https://youtu.be/rZpHizpZSPQ

    • I remember seeming that video, the cable seemed to be loose but in sites that could have been fixed, probably due to licensing issues like he said in the video

    • Because only discrete graphics cards are in a proper position to do that, but that feature won't sell (so the extra cost isn't worth it).

For Intel and AMD iGPU, the aim is to keep the cost down. Basically, with that kind of port, the DisplayPort works with passive adapters. Besides, they'd rather wire them to 2 separate ports.

  • I ordered two of them.
Received today. not working at 4K.

    • might be your cable

    • They definitely do work at 4K60, something is wrong with your setup.

  • Received today, box says HDMI 2.0 not 2.1 or even 2.0b damn
Did not see the HDMI output spec on URL so took a gamble hoping it might be 2.1 :D

    • it’s 4k@60hz so it’s expected to be 2.0

      • Fair! Just read some active adapters claim to be certain spec but they are not and vice versa

        • See my other reply further up - HDMI 2.1 adaptors do exist.

When buying active DP to HDMI adapter, it is important to check the item description (if no specs is provided) carefully:

NOTE: It supports 4K@60hz at 8 bit color depth. At 10 bit color depth, it only supports 4K@30hz.

That means HDMI 2.0 (and at 4K/60Hz, you only get SDR, it "seems" to support HDR at 4K@30Hz). To be fair, at that price, expecting 4K/60Hz HDR is unrealistic. HDMI 2.1 is not a minor update, the bandwidth is more than doubled. No HDMI 2.1 active adapter would underquote (the required chipset is more expensive).

If it is for discrete GPU, then a passive adapter might actually be better & more cost effective. I am using a passive 4K/60Hz adapter and because it is passive, the supported nVidia GPU is doing the actual DisplayPort to HDMI, so 4K/60Hz HDR through that adapter works fine. Furthermore, BIOS screen works fine (again the GPU does the work). However, if it is for iGPU, then you need an active adapter.

It's not nice Wavelink tries to trick people into buying the active adapter by claiming the passive adapter can only do 4K/30Hz. There are some dodgy passive adapters, but there are also some okay ones.

      • Thanks, I see 2.1 rated ones are pretty cheap now will get one of those you linked.
Last time I was looking into these was over two years ago and could only see them for over $100.
