  • Thanks i'll wait for the retina version in April next year.

    • -1

If it's coming (big IF) it will not be as cheap as this.

      • +3

There most definitely will be a Mini with Retina… to be honest, there's only one (logical) direction the resolution can go.

      • +20

actually, i'm pretty sure thats why apple didnt price the ipad mini around the $250 mark, if they did, they would have to increase the price for next years "retina" version, they priced it over $300 so they can say, now you get a retina display at the same "amazing" price

        • +12

this is why Apple are evil.

      • ipad touch is $299(+ GST) and that's retina. this will be $329(+ GST)

        • +4

          no such product

        • +1

Yes, but the cellular option for the iPod Touch adds nearly $500 to the price.

        • +1

Lol I think he meant Ipod touch but still funny as there might be one in future!!

    • doubt it'll be april, the earliest it would released would be WWDC (june)

      • -4

Accoring to source, same time next year unless Android alliance comes up with a killer product.

        • -1

          like microsoft and the zune?

        • That's completely irrelevant… no starting fanboy wars or circlejerks, thanks.

        • "According to source…" = rumor = BS

        • This is a forum. You refer to whatever you want which is the same as "I believe or would be". No credibility for whatever reasons unless you are either Tim or Ive.

    • Thanks i'll wait for the retina version in April next year.

I'll wait for the 3D version.

    • says the expected release date is fall 2013, thats still pretty far away

    • +3

The iPad mini hasn’t been on store shelves for a week yet, but rumors about its replacement have already started to hit the web.

This statement has a pretty naive ring to it… of course there are rumours of the iPad Mini 2, there are always rumours.

      • Naive or not, and cynical or not, it's probably fairly close to the mark.

Coz we all know that Apple wouldn't release a product that was 'crippled' in some way just so they can release another 'updated' version of pretty much the same thing later, right? :p

  • -1

it's up all over the net today. they are talking April release, actually they are talking ready for 'production' next month.

  • +4

I'm waiting for the iPad Mini 5th gen. I hear the screen will be a lot better than retina

    • +11

I actually hear that the iPad Mini 6 will have a Extra Super Resolutionary screen… you'd have to be an idiot to go for the iPad Mini 5.

    • probably. she likes johnny cash.

      • ring of fire? i have a special donut cushion for when i sit.
        it's not a problem.

        • what about mini, won't she need a pad?

        • grandma?

        • stay around at gran's place? suppose i could drive her.

          i'd be a mini driver.

Retina display… My latest experience with Apple products with Retina display: First one, dead pixel found. Asked for a replacement. The replacement one also has a dead pixel. More pixels mean higher chance of defective ones.

I suspect LG make those panels for Apple. While I am an IPS fan, I am starting to get really annoyed about LG's quality control. Similar experience with Dell monitors with LG panels. Dead pixels is so common with LG panels (my experience so far is 50% with at least 1 dead pixel). Everytime I purchase anything with an LG IPS panel, I know there is a good chance it will come with dead pixels.

While it is not Apple's fault, I was expecting better QA from Apple.

    • They are mostly Sharp displays now.

      • -1

If they are Sharp displays, then I am even more disappointed with their quality control. 1 out of 2, I can consider just bad luck. 2 out of 2 - that's poor quality control.

        • So based on your sample size of 4, you have concluded that at least 2 manufacturers are running somewhere between 50 and 100% failure rate? Another win for the education system!

        • lol, Sharp's display technology is one of the best on earth at the moment even though they are in financial difficulties. My dad owns two sharp TVs (one lcd and one led) and their quality is superb (all made in Japan).

        • you have concluded that at least 2 manufacturers are running somewhere between 50 and 100% failure rate?

And where, pray tell, did he state this conclusion? Netsurfer made sure to include the word 'my experience' about three times, and the overall post was rooted in anecdotal evidence, yet we still have idiots like you misinterpreting and assuming that netsurfer was making a fact-based sweeping statement. Another win for the education system!

On the actual topic of the dead pixels, they may have both been from the same batch, and so there would be a higher chance of receiving two with dead pixels (like the early Nexus 7 screen defect)

        • -1

And that by no means correlates to your 50 to 100% failure rate. The chances of getting two faulty units can only logically point to a failure, at somewhere along the line, in quality control testing. The '1 out of 2' was specific to his case, and was not a general statement, nor did it relate to two manufacturers, as a whole.

Everytime I purchase anything with an LG IPS panel, I know there is a good chance it will come with dead pixels.

Right, so you've never used previous experience with a brand in predicting quality? If I bought a Sony TV that had a defect, and received a replacement that did also, the chances of me buying a Sony TV after that are fairly low. Again, that does not correlate to your perceived 50 - 100% failure rate for two manufacturers.

        • To yamumma: I did not indicate the failure rate is 100% (I did not even use the word failure). Where did you see me indicate that? It is you who assumed it (please don't assume things). All I indicated was poor quality control. Since when did poor quality control = 100% failure? My current record of getting an IPS screen with at least 1 dead pixel is 50% (the last 2 iPad 4s did not help). It does not mean that's the official rate, just my record so far.

One iPad with dead pixels was something I anticipated could happen. But replacement one having the same issue was frustrating. Even returning them weren't easy. Do you think I enjoyed that? And, this is to buy Apple products.

I just want people to know, if you know you are getting an IPS screen based device and you cannot stand dead pixels, make sure you buy it from a place that will let you return it for refund or replacement willingly even if the product has an Apple logo on it.

    • I don't know what you're on about. I've had a refurbished IPod Touch with Retina for over a year now, meaning it was pre-owned when I bought it and hasn't had the display replaced, and it's had 0 dead pixels.

  • +1

Retina is a catch cry. The Mini might have the same res as the iPad 2, but the screen is smaller and the pixels are more compressed hence a sharper image. Not as good as the true retina, but the screen is much cleaner than the iPad 2.

  • Layby for Christmas ?

Ive got an ipad2 and ipad mini and personally I tend to agree with GaelicAU, the mini does appear better than my Ipad2, whilst specs might not back it up, my eyes give the impression its sharper, not heaps just a little. I just put it down to the smaller size. I'll upgrade to the retina when it comes out, hard to refuse such an awesome portable device, was pushing out Windows 7 deployments from it today at work using SCCM 2012. Just using Wake on lan at the tap of a button to wakeup a floor of computers and image them.

Before you say Fan boy, this replaced my Nexus 7, the 3rd one…the first two developed the common speaker failing issue and dealing with Google is a pain in the ass.

    • +4

my eyes give the impression its sharper, not heaps just a little.

It is sharper, as it has the same resolution on a smaller screen. You pretty much just bought a 1.8inch smaller ipad 2.

    So, does cellular mean "3G'?

    Thanks

    • I'm given to believe that Apple have implemented an LTE radio compatible with our region's 4G networks, like the one in the iPhone, so this should be 4G compatible.
Apple's probably just retaining 'Cellular' so countries with no access to 4G don't pull an ACCC and sue them for false advertising.

      • Thanks. I was going to get my daughter an ipad, but her dad has said he has sourced one. It'll be new, etc as he is not short a quid and would never buy her used or substandard, just don't know if it'll be reg or mini. He still pays all of my telecomm, and was asking about what sort of ipad I was getting her = whether it would have a SIM. I said he'd be a big HERO if he bought it, so he did - parents you all just need to be respectful and everyone gets along - so just waiting to see what he has arranged.

        • cellular just sounds so archaic. I thought the OP might be an oldie and might not know what wifi was.

        • What is "wifi"?

        • What is "wifi"?

That's not a serious question, is it??? :o

    • -1

      It's compatible with Australian 2G, 3G, and LTE(4G) networks

For 3G it's compatible with all of the networks including the UTMS, HSPA+ and the DC-HSPDA (which is pretty fast IMO)

LTE is supported by both the Telstra and Optus network altough you'd have to live close to the CBD to get any connection, and Vodafone is expected to roll out an LTE network sometime next year altough I doubt you'll get any kind of connection anywhere when it's released

It's noteworthy that whether you use either 3G or LTE network, the battery life is pretty much the same, an amazing feat of engineering IMO.

      • +1

It's noteworthy that whether you use either 3G or LTE network, the battery life is pretty much the same, an amazing feat of engineering IMO.

Hardly an 'amazing feat of engineering'; that's what it should have been in the first place. Battery life only differed because everyone used two different radios, one for 3G and one for LTE. Now they only use one, so the battery issue is nonexistent.

        • Look at all of the LTE smartphones, eg htc Evo 4g the battery last twice as much as it runs on 3G than 4g when using cellular data

Think about 2g vs 3G talk time. It's always longer on 2g

It is an amazing feat, are there currently any other tablet that offers LTE with this amount of battery?

        • +1

You don't seem to understand what I'm saying…

Look at all of the LTE smartphones, eg htc Evo 4g the battery last twice as much as it runs on 3G than 4g when using cellular data

Yes, all of which use two cellular radios; one for 3G, one for LTE. That is why they have differing battery consumption, because they have to power two radios at the same time when LTE is turned on. (And FYI, the Motorola Razr Maxx HD 4G has exceptional battery life).
The reason everyone was using two radios were because the LTE networks were still getting off the ground, at the time, and still needed full support for previous network technologies. That, and many chipsets weren't compatible with 4G radios.
The hybrid radio Apple is using is where everyone should be at (the two separate radios are only a counter measure); it is by no means an 'amazing feat of engineering' - and Apple don't even make the radios, so the feat wouldn't be credited to them, in any case.

And if you seriously think that improvement of battery life is an amazing feat, then you are severely mistaken. The improved energy efficiency of mobile technology is a part of normal technological progression. Don't try to make this out to be more than it is.

  • I got an iPad 4 and it's pretty dahm awesome. Not sure on the iPad mini though.

Anything that isn't retina enabled looks pretty bad on the iPad 4. I'd hate to spend so much money on the mini to have to see that constantly.

    • +1

Doubt it would be the same as its smaller screen so the pixel density should be higher than original Ipad. Only thing that bugs me is the low performance hardware specs of the mini as its basically an Ipad 2 in mini body.

      • -1

go for nexus 7 or wait for retina mini

    • iPad 4… Well, if you are like me and experienced retina display with dead pixels twice (first iPad 4 had that issue, got it replaced and the replacement one also has the issue). I am not impressed with Apple's quality control on iPad 4.

And yes, apps which are not retina enabled… do not look so good.

  • +1

Good deal for the 16GB, but I dont think it's worth paying over $500 for the mini. Apple can make the iPhone, iPad and iPod all have a retina display but not for the iPad mini? They could have released it with retina display this year but they probably held it back from us intentionally because then a lot less people would have bought the 4th gen iPad and there would be fewer people who would upgrade when the next model comes out.

  • I don't see this as a bargain, I suppose if you are heavily invested in the apple ecosystem it might be. Really nexus7 is better all around, better screen, better hardware and better price. The ipad mini 2 should be better though, it should have the high resolution display, better hardware and all that, but who knows what google or micro$ might have out by that time to add competition. :)

    • It's a bargain because its below apple's RRP…

  • If the ipad mini is upgraded to a retina A6 model next year, is it likely that developers will continue to support non-retina A5 hardware?

Am considering buying a mini, but as it is just a smaller Ipad 2 (ie last year's tech), I am concerned that apps may stop working on it once the retina A6 version comes out next year and Apple is no longer selling any non-retina A5 products.

    • There are lots of devices on A5: iPad Mini, iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPad 3, iPod Touch (new gen). Previous gen iPod Touch devices are still available, they run on A4. iPhone 4 is still available (A4 also).

Most companies are writing apps to earn $$$. They will support A5 devices for at least the next 3 years.

The only issue could be some of the upcoming eye candy games might look slightly better on A6 devices (e.g. Real Racing 3). However, they should run fine on A5.

  • Just because something is below recommended retail price doesn't make it a bargain. It isn't unusual to find items less than 50% OFF rrp and even then those items may not be a bargain. Most places never sell anything at rrp, its just a tactic to mislead uneducated buyers to pay more than they should and still think they are getting a good deal. :)

    • apple products are rarely sold below RRP

the ipad mini wifi version was posted and was only saving $10, and that was considered a bargain, this is more than double the saving and this isnt a bargain?

  • Not really, this is more of an everyday price. To me a bargain is more like a one off special price that you will save considerable and unlikely to find any time soon. Like there was a lenovo tablet selling for $230 a few months back and now you are lucky to find the tablet for $300. I'm sure with a bit of effort you could also get at least 5% off this price. But if people are happy to think they are saving something, then good for them. :) Also interms of apple, an ipad 3 aren't that much more and are better in just about every aspect.

  • As of a couple of days ago, the iPad mini has been removed from the Big W website.

IMO Woolies (face it, same company) is a bit cheeky to list an item not for order or buyable, at $20 below what others are advertising it for.

NB I'm not saying the mini is a fantastic device, or is at a good price, or that Apple is to blame or blameless. What I am saying is Woolies could have advertised this at $5 for the last month since they could never deliver it. If they would allow pre-ordering at the $488 price, that'd be another matter.

  • The listing for iPad mini is up again in BigW website. You can check the in-store stock level online as well. Just bought an iPad mini from BigW Miranda this morning. The pricing is the same as the original post.
