Excellent prices. Just be ready to line up a lot due to massive crowds.

    • +1

Standard in Japan, luckily efficiency is also through the roof there, so those lines often don't take very long.

      • +6

Not necessarily, restaurant lines especially are often over an hour wait, and crowds at places such as Universal Studios will have you waiting 2 hours per ride without an express pass, so it definitely pays to not just stick to touristy places, and to plan ahead if you want to go to a specific restaurant, go during non-peak times etc.

The best meals I had were just walking into random places filled mostly with locals. Eat at popular ramen places for breakfast if you want something like Ichiran.

        • -4

Are you all that surprised that you are waiting about an hour at an eating establishment? You'll be waiting about an hour in any part of the world for a table to free up as people usually take an hour to eat, especially when going out for food.

Universal studios is daunting on face value but I actually found it to be pretty decent, estimated hour long wait times ended up being only 10-15 minutes. But I can imagine this really comes down to the day you are visiting. We just made sure we were there on opening and it went totally fine.

          • +2

@doobey1231: I was not surprised because I expected it, I'm simply warning those who are unaware. And sorry, but i've travelled a decent amount and Japan has by far the longest lines of any country I've visited for anything. An hour (minimum) wait for a restaurant is definitely not nearly as common anywhere i've been, outside of extremely popular / viral places, perhaps because Japan often has much smaller seating spaces than others.

          • +1

@doobey1231: It's actually a massive pain in the ass. Pretty much any restaurant you go to has lines for up to an hour. I walked away from many places because (profanity) waiting that long when I can just get some dinner from the 711 quicker. I've never found any meal to be worth a long wait at end of day.

So no, it's not like any part of the world - I can go most places in Australia and get seated immediately.

It's just that Japan has such limited space that they'll often only be able to serve up to 10 people max.

            • @DingoBilly: Can be hit and miss. My first night last time I went over and wanted a proper restaurant experience I got lucky on the second place I hit up with a walk in with no wait. Every other night was either cheap food or lining up just before opening for a minimum wait.

      • +2

I was there end of 2019 and 1 week ago. The lines this time were massive and took 1+ hour for most things.

As for the negs to my original comment - cope harder.

        • +6

No idea why people are giving you negative points, it's completely true, and important for people to be prepared for it prior to going so they aren't taken by surprise and can appropriately prepare, some people are not able to stand for long periods of time, or have children who cannot handle such a wait and may need to adjust their plans or expectations.

        • The whole neg/ upvote UI hook, really invites low quality interactions on the web.

It's not as if you posted anything insulting/ defamatory. If people choose not to pick up a reasonable warning about lines, wait times etc. That's on them really.

Japan just reported record number of tourists visiting the country in March.

    • +1

What's wrong with Ozbargain crowd ??? Why the negs when you are merely stating the fact ???

      • +1

I think its an inaccurate statement to make, its like saying oh you are going to new zealand? get ready for rain! There are just too many variables to behave like lining up is a guaranteed problem when visiting Japan. Last time I went was peak tourist season and the longest I waited was about 30 minutes and that was for teamlabs, every other time I lined up it was quick and efficient, even at the airport. Its okay to recount previous experience but best not to present it as guaranteed fact cause its such a dynamic thing.

        • Dude my experience was 1 week ago.

  • +11

I'm in Japan on holidays right now. First time visiting, but 100% will be doing this again.

    • Nice!
What places are you visiting if I may ask? How busy is it at these places?
      Thanks in advance.

      • +1

sounds like you've never been to Japan?

My recommendation for first timers is to spend at least 2 weeks in Japan if you can.

        Tokyo>Kyoto>Osaka

Yes, I know it's the main touristy areas but it's good if it's your first time. Places are going to be busy because one it's Japan and secondly the YEN is so bloody weak now against USD and AUD.

        • +1

Yeah it will be. Planning for 2 weeks. Will be with the fam, so wife and 3 kids. So was looking probably to just stay in Tokyo. Disneyland, Universal Studios, studio Ghibli museum etc are on the wish list.

          • +4

@SueyJitSu: Don't have your heart set on Ghibli museum, it is INCREDIBLY hard to get tickets, which you must get a month prior to the date on their website. It essentially just crashes and then they're gone, there are guides on the best techniques to secure them though.

Be prepared for 2 hour waits in line per ride at Universal unless you have an express pass which is about $150-$230 on top of the entrance price, if you have your heart set on going to Super Nintendo world without an express pass, you MUST get to the park very early and follow a guide on getting a timed entry ticket, but it's like at least an hour before advertised open time if not earlier.

Also if you are only doing one Disney park, Disney sea is better than Disneyland, and it's unique to Japan whereas you can go to Disneyland in several countries. I see you said universal is on your wish list, and you're staying in Tokyo, you may mean overall wishlist for future travel, but in case you don't, universal studios is in Osaka, not Tokyo. Look at crowd calendars before picking a day to visit as well and pick the quietest day.

It's an incredible country and i've been 3 times now, and can't wait to go again, but I definitely recommend that you look into -every- tourist attraction you wish to see on places like reddit etc as to how to get tickets, how to see the most in the allocated time etc. If you have a popular restaurant you want to visit, make a booking weeks in advance.

        • -2

          It's different for everyone.

I personally found Tokyo to be the blandest of all areas and the one people should drop first. On my last 3 week trip I spent 2 days there and it's honestly nothing special. Just a big city like any other. Previously had spent up to a week there and just had nothing to do (that is worthwhile and not something I can just do at home).

So many more interesting things to see in Japan than being in a city.

          • +1

@DingoBilly: Definitely different for everyone! I spent 2 weeks there my 2nd trip to Japan, with some day trips scattered throughout and I loved it and still would go back again! all depends on your personal tastes. I will say my favourite places on my last trip were Takayama and Kanazawa, and the train ride up to there was some of the most stunning scenery i've seen in my life! I'm glad I spent a long trip in Tokyo to really get a proper feel for it, but definitely recommend checking out more places on subsequent trips if possible!

      • We have two weeks here. Tokyo for 6, Kyoto for 4, Hiroshima for 2, Osaka for 2. Currently on day 2 of Kyoto. Tokyo was busy everywhere, but alot of fun. We don't have kids, so our trip will be significantly different to yours I recon.

  • Does anyone know where and what time of the year that Fuji mountain photo was taken? I went there and it was a disappointment.

    • +5

I'll tell Mt Fuji to get its act together for you, but I can confidently say if you're complaining about it, you'll find something else to complain about during peak season when it looks like that and is packed full with other complaining tourists.

    • IMO looks like its Lake Kawaguchi, probably around early April at a guess.

    • I was in Tokyo 1/4-11/4. The only sunny day that you will see Mt Fuji is on 10/4 which we were lucky! Can even see it from Hotel room.

There is a website doing forecast: https://fuji-san.info/en/index.html

    • Cherry blossom season with some photoshop and you need to check the forecast to make sure you go when it's not overcast and probably go in the morning.

    • It honestly varies day by day, have been out a few times to see Fuji in person with no luck, every time I have been on the shinkansen though, perfect clarity lol.

    • Went there in Feb couple of years back, the view was excellent.

    • +2

We got a postcard perfect view of Mt Fuji on 30 October - autumn is a beautiful time for sightseeing and hiking in Japan.

We studied a Mt Fuji webcam http://live.fujigoko.tv/?n=3&e=1 and it tended to be clearer in the morning in the days leading up to our visit so made sure we got there as early as possible.

The view from behind Chureito Pagoda is a popular spot: https://www.google.com/maps/@23.4234022,120.656623,16.27z/da…

    • +2

I went in winter last year (end of Jan) and the view was perfect! Just be sure to check the weather forecast before you decide on which day to go. I joined a Mt Fuji day tour on Klook and we went to Kawaguchiko Oishi Park, Arakura Fuji Sengen Jinja, Oshino Hakkai and Gotemba Premium Outlets, all with beautiful and stunning views of Mt Fuji.

    • Mt Fuji view is dependent on the weather of the day, if it clear sky no cloud you get an awesome view else
all you see is a bunch of clouds

catching the Shinkansen to Kyoto from Tokyo, an hour out of Tokyo on a clear day you get an awesome view of it, it feel like it a stone throw away

    • +1

I used to work near Shinjuku and my office faced west. Fuji was fairly visible most days, as some far away little mountain way off in the background, easily overlooked and miniscule.

But every now and then the day would be so clear that it appeared to grow 10x and tower over west Tokyo. I'd literally stop in my tracks while trudging to my desk in the morning and spend a few mins just looking at it because it was so shocking how much grander it appeared, and how everything before it suddenly looked like insignificant foothills to the mountain

  • Will flights to Japan ever go back to Pre-Covid prices? Have costs actually increased THAT much or are the airlines taking the piss and charging more for fun?

My partner and I flew Qantas from Brisbane to Narita October 2019 for around $1500 return for the both of us. Feels extremely bad looking at flights for the same month in 2024 and having to pay double that.

    • +3

let me take out my crystal ball for you….umm no unlikely especially seeing how popular Japan is in recent years

    • +2

Doubt it, combination of Japan being a popular destination at the moment (seriously anecdotal here but I know at least 20 different people went in the last year through my social media). But also a strong part the airlines are just taking the piss, like every other industry that sells direct to the public.

  • +11

Looks like ANA doing pretty similar pricing. Would probably pick ANA over QANTAS for service though

    • I was looking at ANA for May-June for ~$1000. Google Flights email this morning said price went up to $1300. I would have preferred ANA but Qantas might be the go now.

    • +5

All things equal, it's always a bit of a special start of a holiday to fly with an airline of the destination country.

Regardless of the class you are traveling, you will probably find a consensus that food and service on Japanese airlines is better than Qantas.

      • +5

Absolutely, we splurged the extra $150 or so to fly with japan airlines and it was absolutely worth it, not to mention the 2 x 30kg baggage allowance, we brought a folding duffle bag from kmart and a padlock to shove all our clothes into so we had an entire 2nd suitcase to fill with stuff. Also brought a Zojirushi rice cooker as carry on, was awesome.

        • Did you find a rice cooker for sale which is suitable for our voltage?

          • @ozbarbara: Yes! BIC camera has a section of "overseas models" which are 220-240v :) they come with a Japanese plug but you can simply buy a convertor there for a few dollars, or change the power cable to an Australian one when you get home (it's removable). We got the NS-ZLH10 model, absolutely love it!

      • Have never thought of that! Love it

  • +3

This is ok prices but bear in mind this is the hot/raining season period.

  • Perth flights are via Singapore with the second leg on JAL. Good deal.

    • My thoughts exactly. Makes layover more bearable.

  • -2

I had no idea that Qantas flies from Cairns to Haneda.
Jetstar usually lands in Narita for like 1/4 the price using a Dreamliner.
Will Qants give me a B737 codeshare with Virgin?

    • -1

      Probably.

    • Qantas doesn't. And right now for some of the time periods QF is cheaper than JQ

    • Was it too hard to click on the link and see the Cairns flights connect through Sydney?

      • -2

I did not know that Sydney laid half way in between!

  • JAL has some good prices there too. Is it worth forgetting the points and going with a Japanese airline? I have heard the overall service is much better.

    • +8

Have flown to Japan many times with JAL.

JAL's service is infinitely better than Qantas' service. The staff from Check In to on board the plane along with meals and comfort are all superb.

      • +3

        Agreed.

JAL "Infinitely better" than Qantas might sound like an exaggeration but it's not.

      • I have Qantas Club membership, it's the only reason I'd consider begrudgingly flying Qantas to use the international lounges, still JAL even then ?

        • +1

Given JAL fly direct, unless you've got some reason to be spending ample time in the Club prior to or following the flight, I'd say so yes.

I've not flown Qantas to Japan (have elsewhere though) since 2019, but that last trip put me off completely.

      • You can use QFF points to purchase JAL business class

    • JAL > Qantas but JAL only has overnight return flights while Qantas has day time returns.

    • You’ll get Qantas points flying JAL

      • Yeah sorry was about to correct myself, I mean status credits.

        • You’ll get them too, although maybe not as many as if you flew the same route on Qantas

          • @recession1: News to me, I flew jetstar last time and didn't get status credits then, but maybe things have changed.

            • @doobey1231: Can confirm for JAL. Recently flew with JAL to Japan and received both Qantas status credits and points.

            • @doobey1231: On Jetstar you’ll need to add a bundle to get status credits and points

  • Is this good pricing for Japan post-covid times from Melb? Or will Japan airlines or other airlines have better sales?
I remember 500-700 was good pricing with japan airlines but was pre-covid times

    • +1

Yes, i've been several times since covid and had tracked prices consistently, anything under like $1100 direct from Melb from a full-service airline is a good price in this current climate. You likely won't find much cheaper, but at the same price or a smidge higher I would pick Japan Airlines over Qantas any day.

  • +8

A note for those who lust after Japan Airlines, where all economy seats are like premium economy:

For SYD to HND; There are $1,081 return fares on a sprinkling of days most months for the rest of this year. (fare code:O)

For MEL, BNE, ADL and HBA: Around $1,200, you can get a guaranteed QF connection to SYD and then JL direct to HND via this hack on the Japan Airlines website.
    1. Search for SYD to HND to identify dates that are $1,081.
    2. Then, switch to multi-city and search the same dates but add connections to and from your capital city to SYD.

    e.g.
    17 Oct, 5:30am, MEL - SYD
    17 Oct, 9:15am, SYD - HND
    30 Oct, 6:25pm, HND - SYD
    31 Oct, 10:20am, SYD - MEL

Also, Haneda (HND) is a vastly better experience than Narita (NRT).

EDIT: One of the last airlines to allow free seat selection.

Only JAL have flights leaving Brisbane and its hard to search for them so thanks for the hack !

      • +2

Happy to share the JAL goodness.

Forgot to say that Canberra can use this hack too.

Plus with Japan Airlines you can often add free (+taxes) domestic connection to other cities in Japan (but maybe not possible if you are using connecting services in Australia ie the BNE to SYD but you could try). That'd make for a length of Japan one-way train trip, fly into Sapporo - train down through the island - fly out of Fukouka.

        • THC, the JAL site keeps telling me that my session has expired (I'm changing taps and checking other sites etc, but they don't give you enough time), what's the cheapest you can find in this hack from Adelaide from May to June for 2 - 3 weeks? I know it isn't enough time, but I have those two months off and want to go to Japan, and hope it isn't as hot as everyone is saying it's in those months. Tia

          • +1

@AussieDaddy: I'm excited for you, here's lowest price days in May and June:

            Departures: 29, 30 May, 4, 5, 9,11 June
            Return: 12,19, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26 June

            e.g. Multi-city:
            28 May, 13:10 ADL - SYD
(overnight Sydney at your own expense)
            29 May, SYD - HND
            19 June, HND - SYD
            20 June, 8:40 SYD - ADL

            $1,170.92

Qantas could do this for a similar price with better timings but I'd avoid their old A330s.

June may be hot and wet but not as bad as July and August, see historical charts: https://www.meteoblue.com/en/weather/historyclimate/climatem…

            • @Time has come: Really appreciate it. Will check all options available and will decide ASAP. Ta

        • I tried doing this:

          15 Nov, 0600am, CBR - SYD
          15 Nov, 9:15am, SYD - HND
          8 Dec, 6:25pm, HND - SYD
          9 Dec, 0800am, SYD - CBR

I click next once I added all my personal info details and it says this: The requested cabin class is full or not available in at least one of the options listed below. (5003)

I highly doubt it's fully booked, but unsure why it won't let me proceed - any ideas?

          • @eltito: Those 'requested cabin full' messages usually appear while you are selecting flight options but they don't stop you from continuing.

The only potential problem is your 8am SYD - CBR leg might not be within policy for the airline at that airport.. The 9:10am option might be better. I'm no expert.

            • @Time has come: I noticed the message appears when booking SYD - HND leg (and return HND - SYD), however even after I enter my personal details and click continue it gives me a similar error and doesn't let me proceed. I even changed the return leg SYD-CBR with no luck

              Warning Please confirm the following.
Error: The selected flight cannot be reserved. The selected flight is already fully booked, or may be showing vacancies when it is in fact fully booked.
If possible, please consider choosing another flight. (15079 - 421)

              • @eltito: With your dates I entered dummy name and details and was able to proceed to the select services screen. It just warned me that my fake Qantas Frequent Flyer number was invalid.

Double check the instructions on the form fields. Asian airlines are extremely particular about your name and passport matching and being entered in the right order.

Or, try creating a JAL account first instead of guest checkout.

Or, try a different browser. Turn off VPN.

                • @Time has come: Very odd - no idea what it could be.

                  I tried different browser
I also tried creating a JAL account and going down that avenue
I didn't have my VPN on, so it can't be that

It doesn't matter what I try, just keeps giving me that error (instead of the services screen). I'll try again tomorrow, but don't have a lot of faith - thanks anyway!

                  • @eltito: Good luck. The call centre might be able to help, I've only had very limited but OK dealings with them.

                    • @Time has come: Update: Tried a different computer (with different internet connection) and no luck. I also tried a few different dates.

I then decided to try your route posted:
                      17 Oct, 5:30am, MEL - SYD
                      17 Oct, 9:15am, SYD - HND
                      30 Oct, 6:25pm, HND - SYD
                      31 Oct, 10:20am, SYD - MEL

and once I enter personal details and click next, it gives the same error :

                      "Warning Please confirm the following.
Error: The selected flight cannot be reserved. The selected flight is already fully booked, or may be showing vacancies when it is in fact fully booked.
If possible, please consider choosing another flight. (15079 - 421)"

And the system doesn't let me proceed at all. Unsure why it was letting you but not me. The website I'm using for the multi-city is: https://www.jal.co.jp/au/en/

Anyway, I think I'll have to bite the bullet and pay more to get to SYD and then do the SYD-HND leg - as the hack isn't working (at least for me)

                      • @eltito: I just tried again and I too got error 15079 - 421 after the personal ID page. The seat map for the JAL flights shows economy is almost empty so it must be the Qantas IT system dishonouring the discount fare.

The Internet says that error is common with Qantas and that it can usually be fixed by calling. I'd try the JAL call centre before giving up.

                      • @eltito: I checked ex Adelaide for 28 May (dates for @AussieDaddy above) and was able to go right through, select seats and get to the payment page. Very strange.

    • Thanks for the hack. I will try this next time I want to go back to Japan

    • I wish I didn’t read this. I literally just booked return flights from MEL to NRT with Cathay Pacific with layovers in HKG and it’s about the same price to do your hack … fml

      • +1

You'll enjoy Cathay, it's a solid choice, and maybe next time you can try JAL. I reckon this hack will be ongoing.

        • Thanks man I will.

  • I'd rather swim than fly Qantas

    • -1

Who have you been flying with lol. Qantas is excellent compared to any other Aus airline.

  • +1

(profanity) Qantas. Will wait for JAL.

  • keen to know if anyone travels during august which is hot . Trying to escape Melbourne winter and go in mid August

    • +1

I've been in July. It was not pleasant.

    • Going to be stinky hot. Humidity will be overwhelming considering you're from Melbourne. Hokkaido maybe?

      • What about in June? I'm thinking to go there in June, and hope their summer isn't as bad as ours (at least here in SA when it hits 40s).

        • +1

Personally I avoid humid weather as much as possible. So late May - Jun is still a no-go from me because it marks the start of summer and muggy weather. But you may feel okay.

It's not much about the temp itself, but the apparent temp that's related to humidity. In Tokyo they rarely hit even high 30s, but it just feels so much worse than SA or VIC because of the humidity.

  • -1

Nice price but obligatory Sigh, maybe one day I can afford to travel once cost of living and housing affordability sorts itself out.

    • Sorts "itself" out? LOL

  • I prefer ANA or JAL going to Japan

  • +1

If you don't mind flying CX from Melbourne in Dec, 9 Dec to 25 Dec is just over $1030 return. If you can deal with 10 hr transit in HK each way, seat selection fee, NRT instead of HND, go for it. You can pay a little bit more and select another flight to reduce the transit time.

    • I just did this for flights in October for around ~$1100 and then I saw the hack in the comment above about flying JAL direct from Sydney with connecting flights to Melbourne for about the same price :(

  • I’d say avoid mid June to early Sept - it’s too hot and humid all over Japan.
