    No amount of warranty will get your data back so just make sure, if it's important, have redundancy.

  For your knowledge, there is no such thing as "factory re-certified" HDD. Call Seagate yourself.

  The scam is that generally the buyer won't be able to fill up the entire 14TB in a short time, so you won't see it is a scam as long as the drive can hold 1TB or 2TB. All high capacity HDD/SSD/ThumbDrive use this same trick.

    Some of the units we sold have been used and filled to 99% capacity running chia farms for close to a year with no issues, meaning we have not seen issues like the ones described above.

    Majority of issues we see with these drives are DOA, so an easy warranty replacement. Once in operation, only had one unit returned out of roughly 400 units sold, again within warranty.

    The drives we sell are recertified by Seagate at their factories and we're not the only ones selling the same type of drives, there's plenty of deals here with these lately.

    Everyone is encouraged to do their due diligence, but we have had a good experience selling and using these drives so far.

        We are sourcing these from Seagate and that's what we've been told, at this stage we have not found anything to doubt them. Chia farming (vs plotting) is not stressing these disks too heavily compared to say datacenter operation.

            To clarify, we are not saying and we don't know if these drives have been used for mining prior to being recertified. What we do know is that these drives have been used after being recertified for such purposes without issues, ie no limitations in terms of available capacity.

            @ayuanx: The drives I just replaced with this one are all torrent depreciated for 10 years and still running without fault (I just needed more space).

            Who cares about the terminology? The warranty is clear as is the value statement.

      Mining is one of the use case scenario for large capacity drives, whether new or recertified. The fact that we know of such drives used for mining after recertification was another way for us to know they are reliable units.

    I've bought "factory re-certified" from East Digital. They've been the correct capacity as described. Not something I'd trust critical data on but more than perfect for Linux ISO's

    It's been discussed in previous posts, Seagate do not want to have their sales of new drives impacted too much by recertified drives.
    It is what we are getting at the moment from Seagate, other sellers choose to offer longer warranty, but the drives are supposed to be the same.

      If it is actually Factory Recertified and resold by seagate it would carry more than 6 months warranty imo.

      I would speak to Seagate and get them to clarify why East Digital can offer 3 years on what is (likely) the same product. Wouldn't even want to put my daughter's K-pop FLAC onto a drive with 6month warranty.

        We had our doubts at the beginning too, but after using, selling and speaking to our customers for over a year now, we have to say we understand the value proposition and are in a position to recommend them. Not for every use case of course, but there are enough applications where they are fit for purpose, including mining …. or K-POP, had to do a search for what that is :)

  You can argue back and forth all day about why the warranty is what it is, but the reason is meaningless when you don't offer better value than competitors (e.g. eastdigital) to reflect that difference.

  Your $/TB is about on par +- 10% with eastdigital, but they offer 3 years warranty (with a lot of reports that they are properly honoured and by eastdigital themselves, not tossed off to seagate).

  Also the 1.5% surcharge, lol.

      The warranty is fulfilled by us locally, not by Seagate.
