  • Awesome pricing, only half the price of one Iphone 15 Pro Max

Why the hell are mesh routers so expensive, The hardware in them can't possibly be that exotic that it needs to cost that much?

  • +3

we get so ripped off in oz.

    Amazon Germany $853
    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09NWG1K78

I believe (but not certain) it has all the features & bands as the local version.

EU/UK versions are heavily nerfed in terms of available wifi channels and transmitting power. Avoid like the plague. US versions are similar to ours but still have missing channels.

For this price you could buy a nice Unifi setup, with a couple of either meshed or hard-wired wireles APs.

probably not a tri-band mesh setup?

wired backhaul is always superior, it's not feasible in a lot of houses (apart from archaic rules are requiring a sparky to run them behind walls, just the feasibility of running them). So wireless backhaul is required. On thing the Asus XT mesh units does well is a seperate 5Ghz band backhaul, so it's not band sharing with devices. And Asus's coverage is very good.

But this is very much overpriced for a 18mth old device.
And I agree if you can wire your backhaul then Ubiquiti all the way.

      • Fair enough. It just seems lie a lot of money for a couple of Wifi 6 mesh points. I haven't used the Asus software, but assume it is not on the level of Unifi.

        • oh.gawd no, it's just bog standard consumer interface. you can flash with Merlin firmware to give more features, but not even close to the unifi ui & system. yep it is well over priced. I got a pair of XT8's a few years ago to replace my unifi system as I couldn't run cables, but only paid $530, they're still selling for $900+! crazy for a 4yr old device, especially when you can get them from Amazon Germany for ~$525.

Genuine question, I have seen a few of these kind of deals lately, but don't really get why people wouldn't be holding out for the WIFI 7 versions of the same product. I get that these will be cheaper, but wouldnt it be better to go into the new standard in the long run?

    • probably because there's bugga-all end user devices that support wifi7. Samsung s23 & above does, AFAIK no Apple device.

Wifi standards have always been release first, fix up later. From 802.11,b,a,g,n,ac,ax there's been half-arsed rush-to-market implementations which get patched later on. Personally AC is mostly used in our house, some ax, but it's not actually required. Our internet connection is the real bottleneck. But even streaming 4k video via internet or on the LAN the bandwidth required isn't even close to being max'd out. we've currently got 54 devices connected to wifi, mostly smart toys, which sit on the 2.4ghz band twiddling their thumbs. I usually wait 18-24mths before upgrading to the latest wifi tech, for the bugs to be ironed out & the actual devices owned to have the tech included. In the early days I did upgrade to get B.& G support, but it was a waste of money for the premium paid.

Good point, but at least make it 6E, this is a 2 generation behind device for 1k

        • absolutely.. we just get gouged in Oz.

    • The Wi-Fi 6 hardware should be discounted far more to sell.

    • Definitely why these things are going on sale now. Been eyeing a TP Link wifi 7 mesh already available here and now at comparable price.
One reason why peiple aren't going for wifi 7 routers though is that there srent many wifi 7 clients yet. So for some, they cant justify paying for a feature they wont be using until1-2 years later

  • Superloop have a great deal on a free WiFi6 router (EERO6+) at present.

For the vast majority of us on NBN speeds of around 100-200Mb/s max, getting WiFi that is capable of 10x times that is pointless.

Get a 2nd or even 3rd one for easy WiFi 6 mesh at a fraction of the $1000 asked for here.

I agree. I can't see myself using Wifi 7 speeds, since I use wifi mostly for portable devices such as mobile phones. I understand that you could utilise 10Gb speeds if you edit 4K video that is stored on a NAS, but in that case a wired network is probably more suitable. Wifi 7 would be more if you have thousands of clients at large events, and not really ever for home users. Not in the hear future anyway.

  • I have the zenwifi XT8 that was purchase almost 2 years ago and can’t be happier with it. Yes it costs more but the stability with wifi signal, wide range, ability to setup VPN connection to connect back to home , ability to setup VPNs like nord vpn that too for specific devices is great. I can set chrome cast to always connect to a different country!

More than this ability to control each device, block internet ( if you have kids you know why). Reward kids with extra internet time say 30 mins, ability to group devices to block internet for eg, kids laptop, iPad etc is possible with one click.

There is also lifelong threat protection subscription, ability to block malicious websites etc.

Mentioning all the capabilities to get feedback on other routers so that I can decide to spend less next time when I upgrade 😊. Also hoping that this could benefit someone.

    • Feature-wise, get a couple more years out of the XT8s. Wifi 7had just been ratified, and at the asking prices why be a guinea pig? Wifi 6e could be nice, but the band setup in the XT8 is better than the ET8.

      • Agree with you. Not planning to spend any money now 😊. The asus is going great with almost 50 devices connected 😊.

  • Dont know much about the brand but Amazon has a WIFI 7 mesh sytem 2 pack $704.35 not sure how is features compare to what Tavk mentioned re the XT8, but it has an app with parental controls, QOS and the normal nicities and 3 full 2.5gbps ports.
