  • Great price, older tech…

    • what's the latest tech in this space?

      • +21

My very broad understanding is that Samsung (which makes these QD Oled panels) currently have 3 generations of the tech.

The Gen 1 panels released in 2022 are

        • 34" inch ultrawide curve
        • 3440 & 1440 pixels
        • 175hz

The Gen 2 Panels in 2023 are

        • 49" Super Ultra Wide Curved
        • 5120 * 1440 pix
        • Available in either at 144hz or 240hz refresh rates
New subpixel layout with better text clarity
Upgraded brightness by 30% from the previous gen.

The Gen 3 panels in 2024

        • 31.5" flat or curved
        • 3840 * 2160 '4k'
        • 240hz
also available in 27" sizes at 360 hz

There's a very boring talking head video which compares the 3 generations https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psykfCmqKqw
The newer OLED panels are very pricey though but the main draw is that the newer generation stuff is more durable than the previous and are more resistant to image retention / burn in.

        • Thanks. Is that right in saying if I want a 21:9 34 inch monitor, the tech in this MSI one is still the best option?

        • +2

The thing about OLED generally is that they're all fast enough to push north of 500Hz subject to the t-con attached to the panel, so the 'older' panels don't exactly have to update to get the improvements of the Gen 3 designs.

But there will eventually be panels that properly push for 90% of rec.2020, as well as updated sub-pixel tech that increases longevity and brightness. Biggest issue is figuring out how to efficiently drive 1000Hz, then driving response times down to sub-0.5ms on all transitions.

That was a boring talking head

        • I appreciate this clarification. I was confused as to why the new DELL 32" QD-OLED was gen 3 rather than gen 2 - but this explains it.

    Manufacturer site and specs here.

    175hz AMD FreeSync Premium Pro
    DisplayHDR True Black 400
    UWQHD 3440x1440
    1800R curve
    250nits in SDR / 1000 HDR
    DP 1.4a, HDMI 2.1 x2

Looks like a Gen1 QDOLED, which is…….. probably not recommended.
    Definitely not Gen3.
Unlikely to be Gen2 since the product page does not say anything about the fringing problem.

Saw a review a few weeks ago, this is the stripped down version of their QD OLED 34 from a year or two ago that has a fancy design body. The wallpaper of choice makes it seem like it's the new gen3 QD OLED like their 49", actually deceiving tactics from MSI.

Samsung has released a new 32inch oled G8, flat, 4k 240hz. 2K oled monitors are still around 1200-1500. I wish they can drop to around 800.

    • If u can get it for that price then yes I’d definitely say so

    • +2

Yes it is,better in any aspect.
The G8 is now $1499 in Samsung Website, which can go down to $1217 after all discounts, is still better than this deal

      • I’ve got the G8 myself and it’s been a really solid monitor. Only annoying thing is that it has mini ports instead of full sized so if you need to get a replacement like I had to they’re a bit harder to find and more expensive. Also according to the review from monitors unboxed there were problems with the HDR when using AMD gpu’s, I’m assuming that’s been fixed with an update by now but not 100% sure.

      • How to get 1217 please? The price of mine is 1424

        • Sorry i didnt see your comment
          I will explain it

    • Becareful, that model doesn't have full size connect ports, only mini-HDMI/display port. It does have USB-C though, however not sure if the gaming specific features are available when using USB-C. The reviews show that people have mixed experiences.

    Usually $2199

    MSI smoking the good stuff

  • I am still using my AW3423DW, no complain so far.
But I like my another monitor more, Samsung Ark 55 which is much brighter.

  • +1

Well, obviously matching Dells EDU pricing. My mate just recently bought the AW3423DWF for $1300 with EDU code…
Oh well, same panel, just some slightly better features and ports. I also don't like how scummy brands have been with selling these "new" 34 inch ultrawide QD-OLEDs and claiming they're new 2024 panels, when they're actually just the old panels in a newer body. Puts customers off buying their products.

  • A bit unrelated to your question, but how come the coupon doesn’t work anymore? I remember seeing that the sale lasted between the 19th April to the 30th or 31st May and now it doesn’t work anymore.. I didn’t remember seeing anything saying or until stock lasts but I suppose I could be wrong.
