The UM780 XTX has been really popular, and I've had my eye on the 64GB model. I took a shot and contacted the store to see if they would go any lower than $1k on the 64gb variant and they actually sent me a code that brings the price down to $999.99 lol… Now that's a sweet deal this one.

  • no OS?

You'd almost prefer to not have one with the amount of them having malware and dodgy stuff preinstalled on them.

Having said that, the raw hardware on this is amazing.

Many gaming pcs will top out at 32gb (from a store).

      • i don't game much but struggling with browsers on my intel nuc

do you think it will help?

        • +1

          faster and faster.

        • I have this exact Minisforum model. It's a beast.

What you said doesn't make what superroach said less true.

Would you rather a risk of malware in your OS/software and also your BIOS, or a risk of malware in just the BIOS?

          • +1

@bienvenu: i didn't contest what superroach said? as im not a security expert cautious with my wording not to spread misinformation merely pointing out it exists and some reading material for anyone interested

however, from my understanding yes i'd rather malware in OS/software level because it's easier to detect/remove while raising my suspicion alerting me to investigate hardware level, BIOS being hardware level will affect OS/software level regardless of whether it exists or not

i'll always reinstall OS/software to remove any possible bloatware regardless of whether it's malware infected and system level malware will persist and inject malware at a software level regardless

Moonbounce targets the CORE_DXE in the firmware, and runs when the UEFI boot sequence is started. The malware then intercepts certain functions to implant itself in the operating system, and phones home to a command and control server. This then results in a malicious payload being delivered remotely, to neutralize the system's security.

my uncertainty in preferring malware at OS level erodes slightly considering microsoft may have built in security mechanism that prevent injection would have to patch each specific attack vector but why risk it, you can always clean the software level you can never clean the hardware level THEN if BIOS can initiate network devices before POST can download new attack vectors

i may not fully understand but can see so clearly it's a massive web of attack vectors, why mess with it? if cheap chinese products are willing to infect on an OS/software level that can be easily removed nothing is stopping them from infecting the hardware level and that's why i wanted to bring this up as we aren't any safer if software is clean we'll never know if/when malware will activate itself

            • @mantra: Would a Bios update from usb stick, wipe any trace of a bios that has been compromised?

              • @spriggan43: Would like to know this too. And it's it straightforward updating such a computer with a BIOS obtained yourself?

  • So tempting. Does it come with a quality power supply?

    • Got mine last January at Amazon for $853.99 and I’m happy with it. Power supply seems fine to me.

  • I'm waiting for the HX200 to replace my "old" HX90.

  • How does this compare (noting only 16GB Ram) - but much cheaper especially after applying a $30 coupon they send when you sign up an account:
    https://morefine.com/products/morefine-s500-r7-7840hs-r7-784…

512GB version ends up being $379 USD or about 580AUD.

    • Yeah agree that there may be cheaper alternatives but I think they aren't necessarily the same quality or performance. The one that you linked has no SSD, no dual 2.5G LAN, there might be other things as well I didn't look in detail, another thing to consider is the heat performance is different for different brands. I guess my reason was minisforum have better name in general, better looking, and peace of mind buying through Amazon.

  • Does this come with Windows Pro or Home?

    • I got the 32gb ram model and it came with home

  • Anyone running Linux (Ubuntu) on one of these? What is the device support like? (e.g. bluetooth, sound).

Also, what's the fan noise like on these at idle? I've got another minipc, and at night the whine from the fan is quite noticable.

And can that any RGB LEDs be turned off in the BIOS?

Looks like it's down to $999 without the code at the moment.

  • Hey guys, I don't play any games, all I need is fast and speedy internet surfing, using office software and streaming high quality 4k videos, I prefer less noise though, may I know if this one or the 32GB RAM version is good for me I actually can go with cheaper and less powerful options

    • I think 32GB option would be more than sufficient for your use case. Also just noticed that it has dropped in price too, sorting at $855 which is a great price IMO.

  • How do I contact the shop? I want a better price on this

  • With mention about the possibility of malware in mini PCs, possibly even in the firmware, what can you do to assure yourself that it doesn't have this?

After reinstalling Windows, what could you check to see if it's returned? Malwarebytes?

Would running Linux instead of Windows render a firmware malware useless?
