It's worth mentioning that this is the LCD Model (Older Model) and doesn't have the bigger battery etc.

    • +13

Yeah I would pay a bit extra for the OLED model.

And Switch 2 is coming out soon. For some people Switch 2 will be better than this, even though this can play like a million pirated games for free very easily.

      • +5

        Soon being next year

        • +12

That's soon. I'm never going to die so it's just a blink of an eye for me.

      • +13

Can't wait to play Mario, zelda and supersmash all over again

        • Absolutely. Every generation for the rest of our lives.

          • +1

@AustriaBargain: Well that's a contradiction, a few minutes ago "rest of our lives" wasn't a concept for you as a self-proclaimed eternal being…. this would only work for a blink of an eye? :-)

            …. I'm waiting for Switch 2 …. impatiently

        • +1

You joke but I played smash for thousands of hours and Botw is my favourite game of all time. So yes, I am excited.

        • +2

Can’t be any worse than playing Call of Duty Modern Advanced Black Ops Warfare V.

        • +2

Don't pretend Botw and Totk weren't amazing. Those two games along justify owning a switch.

A modded OLED switch is also a pretty sweet little retro emulation machine.

          • -1

@creesy: Yes I bought a switch for those two, and yes they got boring after about 10 hours. Totk much faster since it was more a dlc than a different game.

        • as much as i want to make a joke about Mario Kart 8 Delux being a re-release of the wiiu version.

Atleast over time they added a map pack and more characters.. (almost like pc games in the 90/20's when an update actually included more content)

rather than re-releasing the same game annually like anything 2k has made for the past 10 years..

          /Old Man Rant

      • I think you're gonna need both

      • also please note that big probability that Switch 2 is LCD not OLED

        • Lol it will be on the switch 2 pro out in 2029.

By then everyone else will be on Micro Oled.

Either get the OLED 512GB for around $1000 or the 64GB LCD for around $600 and upgrade the SSD.

Also, 15%/22% off at eBay in 3 days. It may or may not work on Steam Decks but worth the wait.

    • Is it possible to get 64GB LCD second hand for $400 now? May bite one for fun at that point.

      • +4

Seems like people still want good money for them ($500+) at least used on eBay. If you were to buy from China there's plenty on the used market (Xianyu) for around $450 but you would need to pay shipping and good luck with returns.

      • -5

I'm not sure if you can upgrade the SSD in the 64GB model. I think it's only a thing for the 256GB model and up.

        • +5

          You can.

          I've done it 3 times.

          • +3

@DASHCAM NOW DUDE: Yeah! You're right. Just looked it up. Not sure why I thought that. Might have been something else to do with the use of EMMC flash or something

    • There's also some 1.5tb SD cards getting around now if you can't be stuffed with changing ssd's

      • +1

I'd change SSD over running software from SD card…. There's a world of difference in performance.

  • What games are you guys playing on this that doesn't drain the battery too fast?

    • +6

      Flappy Bird

    • +5

      Balatro

    • +1

Hades lasts about 2 hours on my 64gb

      • I am pumped as hell for hades 2

      • +5

        That's poor

        • Agree. Very disappointing. Shouldnt be approved for production

    • I use it as a mirror for adjusting my hair when it's turned off.

      • Which part of your hair?

        • +15

Let's just say I put it on the floor.

    • +1

      Slay the Spire

    • GTA IV

  • +1
  • I've thought about getting one but $1k for the OLED is too steep for something that might get no use in a month, this is different.

What's a few good casual games for the Steam Deck?

    • Emulator station

      • +2

$700 is a pricey emulation station when there are so many other options.

        Any actual Steam games?

        • +2

Chained Echoes. Sea of Stars. Pixel games are perfect for steam deck!

    • +1

I have the original LCD, its awesome for playing older games on the go.

Currently playing GTA IV. Next is Witcher3. Mixing it up with a few roguelikes, Hades, Dead Cells etc.

Deck builders like Slay the Spire.

    • +1

There's tonnes of indies. Farming sims, roguelikes, adventure games.

I've personally been playing a lot of Balatro, Last Epoch, and Oddsparks on it.

  • Is there anything on the horizon yet as for a hardware refresh for steam deck? Like better cpu/gpu version? Or is this still likely to have legs for a couple more years?

    • +2

The OLED model is a significant hardware refresh, they updated a tonne of stuff for it — there's various videos about this, e.g. Skillup's review. No news about the next significant performance upgrade yet — Valve are probably waiting for the next generation of chips, so I'd say that's at least a year or more away. My guess at this point would be 2 years.
