Help with Custom iOS Ringtones?

I recently wanted a custom iOS ringtone for my iPhone 11, but it is nowhere near as easy as Android.

I have my track in .m4r format, and it is in my files, is there anything else I need to do? Like is length an issue (it's pretty long). Please help!

Ringtones? You…you don’t have your phone permanently on mute?? What year is it?

To add custom ringtones to your iPhone that are not bought from the Apple App Store, you can follow these steps:

Connect your iPhone to your computer using a Lightning cable.
    Open iTunes on your computer.
Select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes.
    Click on the "Tones" tab.
Drag and drop the custom ringtone file (in .m4r format) from your computer to the "Tones" section in iTunes.
Click the "Sync" button to transfer the custom ringtone to your iPhone.
On your iPhone, go to "Settings" > "Sounds & Haptics" > "Ringtone."
Find the custom ringtone you just added and select it as your new ringtone.

Note: If your custom ringtone is not in .m4r format, you will need to convert it using a ringtone converter tool before adding it to iTunes. There are many free online tools available that can help you with this. Additionally, you will need to have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer to complete these steps.

    • Yeah but recently iTunes for me has only displayed books or smth and not music (I'm on windows) does it still work?

i usually use zedge to download the tone i want - then use garage band to max out the volume - and save it as a ringtone.
(its thunderstruck intro at max volume)

    • Hi, while you are mostly right as a younger person (not trying to say you are old) here is my fool proof way I was taught and it works perfectly every time, all you need is iTunes on PC. To add to Tones specifically (can be used for ring, message, calendar notifs, alerts, anything. while any song on your phone in Music app can only be used as Alarm)

      1. Get the music file you want (mp3 etc)
      2. Drag it into iTunes, it should show up in the Songs tab at the top.
      3. Right click and edit the file info, I think on the far left will give the option to choose the play time from 0:00.00 to 0:00.00, now set it to any part of the music but keep it 9.99 seconds maximum (for some reason you can’t drag and add it to tones later if it’s longer than 10 secs)
      4. after set time and play to test in iTunes (it will only play the part you choose. With the song selected in “Songs”, go to File>Convert to AAC and it will convert it to a 9.99 sec AAC file in iTunes folder.
      5. Right click the song and click “Show in folder”. (I always close iTunes once at this stage just incase it breaks something) then select the file in the folder you just opened and rename the file from .m4a to .m4r then keep the folder open.
      6. Open iTunes and delete the song from Songs, then as you wrote..

Connect your iPhone to your computer using a Lightning cable.
Open iTunes on your computer. (Wait for sync/backup to finish)
Select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes.
      Click on the "Tones" tab.
Drag and drop the custom ringtone file (in .m4r format) from your computer to the "Tones" section in iTunes.

      • it should be transferred instantly at this point.

Click the "Sync" button to transfer the custom ringtone to your iPhone.

On your iPhone, go to "Settings" > "Sounds & Haptics" > "Ringtone."
Find the custom ringtone you just added and select it as your new ringtone.

      • as a ringtone it should be able to set system wide. Calendar notif, different one for Reminders, different one for general (3rd party apps) etc.

Note: If your custom ringtone is not in .m4r format, you will need to convert it using a ringtone converter tool before adding it to iTunes.

no need to find a free m4r converter. as I mentioned it works perfectly with my method above. pretty sure the 10 sec max limit is restricted by iOS for system wide “Tones”.

If all you want is for a song to be your Alarm sound. You can just sync the song file to the phone using iTunes (where it shows up on music app on the phone).

And when selecting Alarm sound in clock app it shows “Pick a song” towards the top.

Lol. I would expect this question from a newly bought Nokia 3650.

    • It's basically a mechanism to stop people using copyrighted music as ringtones
