[VIC] Families of Students in State Schools Will Get $400 Credit in School Family Accounts in Term 4 @ Victorian Government

913

From the website:

Families just want the best for their kids, but with cost-of-living rising, school uniforms, camps, sports – the other things that make school fun – it all adds up.

The new one-off School Saving Bonus gives families of school kids one less thing to worry about and makes life that little bit easier.

The Victorian Budget 2024/25 delivers the School Saving Bonus as part of a $287 million package Providing $400 in support for every child at government schools, and eligible concession card holders at non-government schools.

How families will receive the School Saving Bonus
The Bonus will be provided during Term 4 of this year, making sure families have time to plan and budget for the 2025 school year ahead.

Families will receive a credit on their school family account to help meet the cost of activities and uniforms. Cash will not be paid directly to individuals or families.
More guidance on implementation will be provided to schools and families in Term 3.

Eligibility
The School Saving Bonus is open to parents and carers of every child enrolled in a government school in 2025. For non-government schools, families eligible for the means-tested Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund, including healthcare and concession card holders, will also be eligible for the additional $400 support.

If your child attends a government school, you do not need to apply or do anything to receive the School Saving Bonus; the funds will be provided to your child’s school.

The application process for non-government schools will be the same as the existing Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund.

Cool story Allan, where's the cuts for the ginormous debt you've incurred though?

  • +5

The funds will be provided to your child’s school.. so you dont get anything, assume the school gets the money and spends it on something that might benefit the kids? How is this Ozbargain worthy?

How many concession card holders would have kids and be able to afford private school fees.. not many.. if any. Unless freebie or scholoship…

    • +1

The money goes to the school directly to pay off a portion of the yearly school fee so you have $400 freed up for uniforms/books/etc.

      • +2

Excellent, but that government funding (extra).. not money that goes into people pockets so i don't see how this need to be on ozbargains.. Midas well put CCS and medicare schemes up there too.. shouldnt this just be part of normal funding that schools get.. don't see why they need to make a big deal out of it

        • Who is going to be first to post toll-free suburban roads as a bargain?
I'm glad to see the Victorian government is subsidising the fees for public schools. NSW also has mandatory "non-compulsory" fees and levies for kids enrolled in it's state schools.

    • This is not OzPhilosophical or OzPolitical.

Get this into the forums ASAP!

Might be time to quit this website soon?

    • Better than the shitshow that is the WA family assistance payment:

      1. Uses the service WA app, which relies on linking to mygovid, which requires identity be confirmed. Which would be fine, except many people cannot do this as they get errors that cannot be bypassed
      2. They make it very hard to know there's an online form. Online form is down, education website preventing everyone from access right now.
      3. You can snail mail. That's if you can print the form, which is only available on the website, which is down.
      4. The relevant politician buried their head up their arse and said there's no issues at all

It's so difficult to claim. We agreed to give half to charity, but it's not worth the fkn effort

I would have preferred it went straight to our school's account and wasn't any fuss at all.

    Definitely not a bargin.
Big F U to families in non state schools or people without kids. Just throwing around more of other peoples money they dont have.

    • +3

Available to people on concession cards at non state schools too

    • +2

Big F U to families in non state schools or people without kids.

Yeah, we should also stop all cancer research too, because you know, there are people without cancer.

      Such an egotistical perspective…

    • +5

Funding education and supporting kids is important and the government should prioritize.. i just don't think making it seem like $400 extra is going to affect much.. better they just fund schools properly without the song and dance..

    • If by non state schools you mean private, yeah, you can stop complaining.

Actually I suppose if done correctly you should get the $400 payment. However the government should not send one single cent to any private school or child otherwise. It's a PRIVATE school.

      • People read private and think the $30k pa schools proper rich people send their kids to. Many of the catholic schools dont cost much more than public and many of the people sending their kids there could use the same help.

        • Point taken as to the difference in fees, but still it doesn't change anything - either be public and receive government funding, or private and do not. Government subsidies to private industry just screws everything up in the long run.

If the head church or parents do not wish to invest that extra money to their private schools, the church can close the business. (not overnight.. clearly things need to wind back slowly just so kids have somewhere to go while churches bow out.. but this is the kind of crap situation that government subsidisation of private industry always results in when it occurs over a long time period)

          • @justtoreply: Catholic schools get about half their funding from the government. Most would not exist without that funding, schools are very different to other industries where i mostly agree they should not be meddling.

    • The LNP member just stood up.

  • +2

I still don't quite understand why these types of payments aren't means tested. Not every child and family have the same capacity.

    • +1

AGREE ! Families with the most creative accountants should be rewarded

    • That's why we're giving away half. But, yeah.

  • +2

What will happen to the funds for kids in grade 6? Is is transferable or it is gone?

    • Looks like the grade 6’s will have a end of school trip to a theme park!

  • big LOL

    Good. free $$$$ for ALL.

  • -7

Does nothing to help the $24,000 a year I pay Haileybury every year. Sack Dan!

    • +2

It’s only due to be given in term 4. You always have time to move the kid to a state school.

    • +1

Your choice to pay such a pathetic sum of money. Better off using it for their uni.

  • Lol

  • +7

This government is so pathetically incompetent.

    • -2

One moment OzBargain is going on about cost of living and wondering why the government isn't doing anything about it, then the next something happens to help cost of living pressures (Albeit in a small way) and it gets called incompetent 🤷‍♂️

  • +2

The money is being paid to the schools and can only be used to offset school related fees and charges. State schools are funded by the state. So they're just paying themselves.

    • +2

These are available to fund things that ordinarily require additional payments from families.

      • These are available to fund things that ordinarily require additional payments from families.

Like being enrolled? Stationary packs? White board markers for the teacher? Books for the school library? What else?

        • Excursions, incursions, school camps.

          • @noisymime: But the things I listed above are also funded through compulsory fees in the supposedly free state schools. Presumably the $400 can be put towards covering those costs too?

Plus never mind the many $'000s that parents of kids at my local state school are paying for tutoring after school and on weekends. Let's not kids ourselves that public schooling is actually much cheaper than many low fee private schools.

  • Kids in private schools miss out.

Being in WA, the cashed up government here has done $200 for every highschool and $150 for every primary school student.

Elections are coming up so cash is being thrown around.

    • +4

I'm sorry, but private school kids already have an unfair advantage. All kids should receive a minimum contribution from federal and state government regardless of which school they go to. Then there should be a proportion on top that is means tested (which would mean low income families with kids on private scholarships etc. would still receive additional support fairly). Then scrap unfair infrastructure and under-table funding to private institutions. They have enough cash to spend from their fees and asset accumulation.

      • +1

Private shouldn't get a cent. It's private. However if that gross error was fixed they should then qualify for the family assistance payment (sans further means testing)

    • Kids in private schools that have concession cards still get this. That seems entirely sensible to me.

      • That itself didn’t completely make sense to me. How many parents with a health care card actually can afford private schooling? Must be a small minority…

        • How many parents with a health care card actually can afford private schooling?

Roughly the same number that need an extra $400 to help with excursions and things for their kids.

    • Private schools are already leaching off the tax payer more in Australia than just about anywhere in the world.

Over one billion a year in handouts to supposedly 'private' schools is one of the biggest frauds and scams I've seen.

  • labor racking up more debt

  • +1

Can’t see how this is a deal. Should be in the forum?

    • +1

Yeah. Reported. See how long they leave it up for "publicity"..

    • -1

      Reported an hour ago now.

If Ozbargain is so understaffed - Not right? and therefore by keeping this Non-Bargain up is for more eyeballs and media attention. Pretty much sensationalist ADVERTISING for the sake of a publicity stunt for Ozbargain. Almost as wonderful as the stunts pulled by our much accountable politicians.

Hmmm time for this site to have a name change - what should the changed name be?

      • OzPolitics? Hmm or OzMoreEyeballsWanted

    • Lol. PM received "Thank you for your report"

At least it’s not just handed into bank accounts so it can be blown on booze, ciggies and a point of ice.

Nice all proceeds will be channelled
    thru schools
to the only authorised uniform store in VIC
    for our kids

    pessimistic pleb

  • I thought VIC already has the highest debt?
Oh of course labor is paying debt by increasing land tax and reducing rental supply + pushing rent $ up again.

  • This is not a bargain.

  • Stop funding private schools and just direct those funds to public schools. Instead of funding both and then having dumb eyewash like this thrown out which will have to be paid for by all tax payers!

    • -1

just wondering where all the kids would go if there were no private schools. Public is already at capacity. Land cost to expand public is untenable.

      • +1

You do realise subsidising any activity is what creates these problems in any industry? The fact private schools were subsidised so much is the reason the problem needs to be wound back by implementing an appropriate strategic plan over a long time frame

Private health is skewing the health system too.

If there was no subsidising we would have developed to a better place through necessity. Once things are privatised, the government stops caring about the long term and acting responsibly.

Of course that's neglecting that so many politicians act in the interest of self preservation rather than doing the right thing and planning for the future.

      • +2

Public schools are not at capacity. Only the "good" public schools are at or over capacity due to people doing dodgy address swaps etc to get in. If all schools were properly funded so students had access to the same opportunities regardless of school then we wouldn't have this issue. See Schools and Enrolments https://www.vic.gov.au/statistics-victorian-schools-and-teac… - there are plenty of schools with fewer than 200 enrolled students or less than 20 per year level.

        • in metro melbounre? no these are rural schools.

  • How is this a deal for the regular ozbargainer?

    • -2

Yeah, needs to be in the forums. This is just a publicity stunt by OzMoreEyeballsPls

Need more negs to keep it off the front-page if that's how it works still?

  • I love the hypocrisy on OzBargain.
QLD gov puts $1000 credit on energy accounts and it gets >300 votes. (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/843908)
VIC gov puts $400 credit on school accounts and it gets shafted.
Personally I think gov policy should sit in the forums, but hey.
