I believe the model is Galaxy Tab 10.1 - model P7500

    http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/10.1/spec.…

    http://www.mobicity.com.au/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-3g-16gb.h…

    Wifi + 3g
    1ghz dual core processor
    Weight 595g
Capacitive WXGA TFT LCD display with 1280 x 800 pixels resolution
    Android 3.1

I want to buy my six year old son a 10" wifi only tablet for his Christmas present. I'm willing to spend up to $200. Any recommendations? My initial thoughts are something from Ainol or maybe one of the Aldi Bauhn ones.

    • Maybe try this one http://zzkko.com/ainol-novo-10-hero-10-1-inch-ips-android-4-…
Not sure about the vendor. I haven't made a purchase from them before….

    • Thanks for posting the specs

Most Chinese branded tablets tend to have following issues:

      • Wifi stability issue
      • 1GB internal memory + 15GB internal SD card partition setup
      • Stock firmware not so good
      • Inferior app compatibility (in google Play)

They do play 1080p mkv files quite well and the HDMI output is flexible. Generally, they don't have bluetooth, ambient sensor, GPS.

The 1GB internal memory + 15GB internal SD card partition setup could limit the number of apps (games) you can install on the tablet. It is possible to install custom firmware to bump that up to 2GB.

    • There was a deal on just 2 or 3 weeks ago for the Cube U30GT for $184 shipped express. Do a quick search and you'll see it. I got one and so far no problems at all.

      • I have a friend who has it. I also own a Chinese branded tablet.

The 1GB internal memory issue applies. My friend is happy about it (for the price). There are some minor firmware issues (none of the a show stopper). And, the so called wireless N is basically wireless N 150 (the reason all these Chinese branded tablets have wireless N is because no one sells wireless G chipset anymore).

        Just want to point out:

        • You get what you paid for
        • As a owner of those Chinese brandd tablets, I am happy to let you know the issues so you can make your own decision.

Cube U30GT is one of the better ones, but yet my friend still wants to get a well known brand one.

        • Yes, I own one and I can understand why. Bascially, it's not smooth enough.

  • Shipping fee is quite cheap too

    • And next day shipping too

      • Doorbuster's 'next day shipping' doesn't mean it'll arrive next day, they'll dispatch it within the next day.

        • Yes I know I have generally found it will arrive the next day after it has been shipped

    • the shipping will make the total cost >$300, am i eligible for gst refund?

      • nope, i just bought a $3 marker to get it over 300

Single core, so so battery life. My friend bought one and returned it back to Kogan. Best not to get it.

  • I have the 64 and it's ok as a tablet.

With ICS it makes it much nicer - if you only want a tablet for basic use and browsing and basic games it's awesome.

Hate the custom connector with a passion.

If you need the latest and greatest then maybe not for you. For this price it's pretty awesome though.

    • So can it officially be updated to ICS of does it have to be flashed with a rom?

      • +1

It's an over the air official update (only released in the last month or 2) or through KIES.

This is the end of the line so no JB officially.

  • Hi Guys whats the difference between this P7500 and the newer P5110ZWAXSA I tried to compare the specs but still they look similar (may be faster processor)
    P7500
    http://www.doorbuster.com.au/samsung-galaxy-tablet-10-1.html
    P5110ZWAXSA
    http://www.binglee.com.au/samsung-gt-p5110zwaxsa-galaxy-tab-…

    • +1

The P5110ZWAXSA does not have 3G. That's the main difference.
The P7500 is older, but in almost all other specs they are same.
Some minor differences. P7500 will have Honeycomb out of the box, but there is ICS update available. Although both are Dual Core 1Ghz, P7500 is Nvidia, P5110 is TI OMAP (Just different manufacturers) and have different manufacturers for GPU.
One advantage P5110 has over P7500 is that it has a microSD slot.

      Shan

      A couple of obvious differences

      The Bing Lee one:
      - does not have 3g
      - is Android 4.0

The Bing Lee one is a Galaxy Tab 2 - not sure what improvements they made over series 1 but I'd assume 2 is better than 1….

Mostly it was form-factor from what i could tell to get around the lawsuits flyign around

The full specification of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is on Samsung's website. Despite being "2", i.e. the second generation, it's actually a down-grade from the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. See the review at CNET:

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was one of the premier Android tablets when it launched in 2011, with specs that, at the very least, matched other top tier Android tablets at the time.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 feels almost like a disappointing prequel, rather than a full-fledged "we've improved everything" sequel.

P5110 is heavier, cheaper made, has only VGA front camera, etc. It also does not look like an iPad, which was why the original P7500 got banned in Australia last year :)

  • its good value for 3G
    I want it bad
But no sdcard reader without an adaptor like the IPad
I'd like a Samsung tablet but for me I want freedom to play movie files while traveling
    and 16g is not enough.
    Thanks for posting anyway

    • Think this one, like most Android slates bar the Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire, has a micro SD card slot. Pop in a 64GB micro SD and you're set!

      • Dont hink so on this one
The reviews I read said there was no sdcard slot
I know theres a slot in Tab 2

"Android fans following the progress of Honeycomb tablets throughout 2011 will notice a distinct absence of ports and sockets around the edge of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. To keep its svelte waistline to 8.6mm, we didn't expect Samsung to include a full-sized USB port, but it is more disappointing that there is no micro-USB port — which is the industry connectivity standard. There's also no expandable memory (several other Android tablets feature an SD card slot)"

        http://www.cnet.com.au/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-3g-16gb-33932…

I have an Acer A500 and it has Both and I have 64gb running on it.

Anyway so many models, how many tablets do we need lol

      • There is no SD Card slot - something i had to think long and hard about.

  • Is the Apple 30pin connector compatible with this Samsung?

    • I don't know for sure but I'm 98% sure i've read somewhere that it's not.

I picked up a Belkin charger/usb one for about $30 which is better as it's longer but still proprietary cables sucks arse big time. :\

  • -1

can we make phone call with this tablet?

  • I can recommend Door Buster customer support, had a video camera die and it was replaced within days.

  • Is it jelly bean updatable?

    • not officially

  • sd card desirable but not necessary. with android tablets you could always get otg expandable memory (sd card or usb with adaptor). a bit annoying but a good price for 3g tegra 2, better deal than the 299 tab 2 p5110 if you can put 3g to use

  • To those that might not know, if you have a phone with data plan and WiFi tethering ability, there is no real need for a 3g tablet. I browse the net on my nexus 7 by tethering it to my galaxy s during train rides. Works perfectly

    • +3

it's a big drain on battery though, it eats up more power than video playing in my experience

      • +2

Yep, huge amount…I can literally watch my ph battery meter go down whilst tethering.

Conversely, my good old SGT lasts for ages when using 3G…not much different to wifi only IME.

I'm so fighting the urge to buy one of these to replace the SGT, if it had a MicroSD card slot the decision would have taken approximately 0.68 of a second…which I'm told is nearly an eternity for an android! ;)

        • +2

yeah no sd card and proprietary cables. who do they think they are, apple? :(

        • LoL

        • +1

"the decision would have taken approximately 0.68 of a second…which I'm told is nearly an eternity for an android! ;)"

Very cheeky! Brought a smile to my face.

      • true, but if your train rides only 20-30mins, its not a big deal, even better if you work in an office where you can charge your phone at your desk. for someone in that scenario its a much better option than paying a premium for a 3G tablet and then getting a separate data plan.

        • +2

          A lot of 'ifs' there…

I wouldn't exactly call paying $299 for this particular 3G tab "paying a premium" either! ;)

  • Don't forget to sign up to their newsletter and get $5 your next purchase.

Didn't know that until after ordering and signed up without ticking newsletter as I didnt want to be spammed :(

  • RT Edwards in Queensland have this on there website for the same price. Also Acer 500 16gb for $199. Not sure how much stock though.

  • I think this is a great deal and I couldn't resist and ordered one. The biggest selling point for this deal is WIFI +3G and plus the shipping cost is very reasonable. Missed out the Lenovo Thinkpad 3G model at same price but with 50-70 cash back a while ago, the reason that I didn't pull the trigger for Thinkpad was because of the weight of the tablet, over 700g. But this Galaxy one is light, less than 600g.

I know this is one year old technology and all the news ones coming out lately are all at least FHD display (1920x1200). But most reviews I read regarding the high resolutions tablets are that there are few apps available in Google Play to take advantage of it. Surely with the release of the Nexus 10, developers are more likely to develop high resolution apps. But it will take some time. So getting a cheap but good quality, low resolution tablet for the time being is the way to go in my opinion.

    • Did any coupon codes work for you? The shipping should be free not in double figures :(. I bought one anyway tho :P

  • Sold out! :(

  • -3

Just a little more u can get the ipad mini, a lot better in specs and resell value.

  • WTF. I don't want a Tab2 lol :(

Please feel free to contact us with any further questions.

    Kind Regards,

    Doorbuster Customer Service

    • Oh dude, that just plain sucks…

      • I wonder if you can cancel the order now?

I've just asked them if its still a 3G version as no mention if not i'll definitely be asking my money back!

        • Dear Customer,

In addition to the below e-mail, we would like to keep you informed that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is 3G enabled.

Still, the Tab2 is a backwards step from the Tab. Should I ask for a refund?

        • +1

It is still cheap, and if you look on the positive side you do get a MicroSD slot & da Jelly Beans! ;)

        • yeah i wasn't too upset about it. sure it might not be as thin or smooth but there's microSD

  • +1

I got that "upgrade" email too. If it is indeed a 3G model, then I think I'm better off because the new tab 2 has the micro-SD card while the original one doesn't.

  • Hey, maybe it is still a good deal BUT I really see this as a downgrade from the "Tab 10.1". Look here: http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/review-samsung-galaxy-tab-2-1…
On the Tab 2 side we have that it is slightly better in battery life, it has the SD card reader, an IR gadget and maybe Jelly Bean is already available (is it?).

But "Tab 2 10.1" is a little heavier and thicker. More important: the camera with FLASH and autofocus of the "Tab 10.1" is gone, the one of "Tab 2 10.1" is without flash and with fixed focus!

Secondly, the "Tab 10.1" has a NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz, whereas the "Tab 2 10.1" has a TI OMAP 4430 dual-core 1GHz. They are more or less the same, one would think, BUT the "Tab 10.1" performs better than the "Tab 2 10.1" in most of the tests. See the link above.

Moreover, the differences can be increased if one upgrades "Tab 10.1" to ICS , something that can be done officially since 2 or 3 months ago. I could not find reviews comparing the devices under the same OS.

My question is, any of you did not receive this kind "upgrade" notice? I would had liked to be in such group.

The screen quality also seems to be worse in "Tab 2 10.1"
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-2-review-benc… :
"The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 again falls short in relation to its predecessor, but we more specifically see that it's particularly weak in green and blue highlights."

    • Yeah, definitely it's not an 'upgrade' in most peoples' minds…side-grade at best! ;)

    • Yeah I totally agree. Mine has shipped so can't cancel now either, and Door Busters don't have a "change of mind" returns policy however does this apply for situations like this?

Tab 2 does not officially have JB yet, although it has been leaked which means JB will be coming. Tab 2 is also not on the list of Adobe Flash "approved devices"
http://www.adobe.com/devnet-apps/flashruntimes/certified-dev… which means you need to side-load flash.

Looks like Door Busters oversold their stock (if they had any) - Drop Shipped?

The more I think about it the more I don't want a Tab 2 :( anyone else having regrets about this purchase?

      • Oh no, you always have the option of cancelling…they haven't shipped you the product that they advertised and that you ordered, period!

A reasonable person would also presume that they would contact you first to ask if you were happy to accept another product in it's place!

      • +2

It depends what you want it for. It is still a good price for a lightweight 3G (lenovo is close but is an older Android and more than 700g) if the purpose is web-browsing and not a lot more. If taking pictures is important to you then this fixed focus camera would not be very satisfying. "Tab 10.1" was already not so good but at least you had a flash and AF.
Gaming seems to be a problem even with Temple Runner (which runs smooth in my chinese W007 phone).

They shipped another item so you have all the right to ask for a refund. They should have given you the choice to cancel BEFORE shipping. Clearly this is not a change of mind on your part: it is the result of they overselling the stock or of they posting a badly advertised model, in all cases, not the customer fault.

        • I actually went to JB today and had a look at the Tab 2 10.1

I know the reviews say it sucks however if you have never seen the Tab 1 in in the flesh compared to the Tab 2 you wouldn't know the difference. Still quite thin and light. Still thinner and lighter than the iPad for comparison.

I think I'll keep this now as if it sucks for all else at least it'll be a decent content viewer with the micro SD slot.

And yes it's still a bloody cheap tablet considering its 3G enabled.

        • got mine this morning. some notable lag setting up everything but it's settled down now. still has the occasional hiccup but it feels great in the hand and the display is very decent. all in all still quite good value for $300

  • I also got the "Tab 2" (white model) I will end up accepting it.

I was wondering if somebody really got the advertised "Tab 10.1" : any comments? What is the feeling of not having a micro-SD card slot?

We, "the tab-2-upgraded club", have the SD-card option: I am thinking in getting a 64GB card. It seems that after appropriate formatting it can be used in the Tab 2. Around 58GB end up being usable so we would end up having a total of around 70GB !!
If anybody knows where to get cheap and good 64 micro SD cards let us know.

    • i remember seeing somewhere that the maximum compatible sd card is 32gb. if you want more than that you'd have to look at otg with adaptors

      • From some forums I tend to believe that a fat32 format seems to be enough.
Still no news of people having received the good old "Tab 10.1" ?
Maybe there were no "Tab 10.1"s at all: Was the ad a mistake?

  • +1

It might well be that there is already a fix for "Tab 2 10.1" enabling it to support 64GB SDXC micro SD cards including the format in which they come: exFAT. For sure the "Galaxy Note" got the fix around August/September. Then , there is big hope for us that the SDXC 64GB as it comes will work. Exploration of the changelog file is probably a good idea: it should show the update with the mentioned fix. It would be ideal avoiding formatting to FAT32. I want 70GB of space. (The class 10 sandisk ones are around $66 + shipping.)

    • good luck with that, let us know how you go!

  • Very happy with this Tab 2 model upgrade ….can use 3G for my Three sim card for phone call.
