My suggestion is any reasonable desktop rather than a 'gaming' mouse. Anything that is advertised as some special feature-packed gaming mouse at this price point is just likely to be poor quality.

Nothing wrong with a good solid desktop mouse.

  • Logitech G400 $35 from MSY

    It's laser, wired, ambidextrous.

    • i think the g400 is optical.. good price for mouse anyway will think abou tit

For those who seems to disagree with my advice:

1: I can find nothing at all to indicate that Laser is better for gaming aside from people raving on forums. If there was any solid evidence, surely the manufacturers would be all over that?

2: Here is a list of top ranked Quake Live players configs from 2010:

Note that highest DPI there is 800. The $9 M90 has 1000 DPI.

The only reasons I can think of to get a laser is if the light on the mouse annoys you too much, but frankly most gaming mice are lit up like Christmas trees, or if you are using it on a really bad surface, in which case whay are you gaming on a really bad surface?

Please actually respond with useful comments if any of this is wrong.

I think you missed the point.

OP wants a gaming mouse for $30. Clearly he wants gaming features, like side wheel tilt, extra buttons, customisable driver software, possibly DPI switching.

He doesn't want a mouse downgrade. If you suggested a basic 3 button mouse, isn't that kind of what he is using right about now?

      • ^ This.

I used my Logitech G9 for several years before switching over to a Logitech G9x (which I got for $20 in DSE sale). I love it and would not switch back to a 'desktop' mouse. Ergonomics and a couple of features are nice to have when you are using a mouse often.

I want to give a +1 to the G400 mentioned above, a very solid mouse. Plus it doesn't light up like a Christmas tree which should make you happy Bruce!

  • pay the extra $15 for a Razer DeathAdder 3.5G. So reliable, simple and really good for pro gaming.

  • G'day chibi. Like Baa i'm now a fan of the G9X bought from CoTd for $50 when thinking laser.

for the $30-$40 price point the logitech g400 and g300, roccat etc are available (optical i gather).
